I had a look at some car sites in Nicosia and was surprised they were not much cheaper than in the North, I went on the Auto trader type site and a few dealers, I find this strange as I was led to believe there was a vast difference

How much do you then pay to register legally in TRNC?? ie customs duty of around 60%.

So did you complain about foreigners in the UK getting all the benefits when they arrived. ie those bl***y p***s and ***s always scrounging etc.

I bet you did but now you are living in a "foreign" country you are happy to pull all the scams you can to save money!!!!!!!!!

No doubt you now whinge about the prices rising and the fact you always get ripped off in the "local shops".

If you live in a country then abide by the rules of that country.

I don't think the difference in price is as great as it was given the poor exchange rate between sterling and euro. If you do buy in the south, the dealers will give you an address that you can use and sort out insurance for you. Annual road tax can be done online. For an annual TRNC 3rd party insurance policy, speak to Halil Atakan 0533-8650198. He can arrange this, very efficiently, for 80 euros instead of the price on the border of 170 euros.

What has abiding by rules got to do with seeking out a fairer price to pay for a car, it is not breaking any rules for your information.

My car was written off by a Cypriot a few weeks ago, he was overtaking illegally, even the Polis told me I was lucky as I could easily have been killed.

His penalty for that was points on his license and a fine.

If the shoe had been on the other foot I'm sure the penalty would have been more severe, so don't talk to me about fair.

i think you may find you will be pulled up more, than if you have a trnc registered car.

also what the tc's do is one thing with one set of rules and if you are a foriegner then you have to abide by a totally different set of rules.

Everyone with a south car will have a visit from the customs at your home in the very near future

They will take you to the customs office take your car from you under threat of being arrested by the police.

They will tell you they will make inquiries into you, and the car .

They will tell you that if you have a house in Northern Cyprus either owner or rental you have no right to drive a south registerered car in the North.

This applies even if you own a south property and live between the two parts of the island which many people do.

After much confussion at the customs office and numerous visits where you will be told to bring various documents they will tell you to pay the penalty of 300TL.

You will then be escorted to the border and told never to return the offending vehicle.

If you ask which rule you have broken they are unable to tell you. "some laws are written down and some are by word of mouth "is the best answer you will get.

So much for unification.

Dear Billy re msg 18

1/ How do you know this ?

2/ "some laws are written down and some are by word of mouth " - I'd like to see 'em try .. an automatic win at the EHCR...if the owner of said car has two properties and spends more than 50% of the time in the "south"...

3/ Some GCs spend longer in the north than the south Gambling... ;)

OK, if you *live* in the area of Cyprus outside the effective control of the RoC and have no dwelling / spend more nights in the "north" you are asking for "trouble".

Remember any settlement will mean that duties will be a thing of the past..

This has happened to me over the last two weeks.

I asked the question about greek cypriots gambling trips ect ,"they" ,the customs senior officers said ,"it did not apply to them only non Cypriot people".

When it was pointed out that this was pure discrimination ,as we are both EU members, "they" the junior staff at the customs all said" take the government to court ,we all know this is wrong ,we do not want to do this its all coming from above"

Who wants to be the test case??

I known many people who live in the North and own South cars, in fact I know of one who has two big Jeeps valued at £40000 plus who will get a big shock when they come knocking on his door.

This is a warning more than anything else.

If you have a south car be careful, keep it garaged out of sight.

If you were thinking of buying a south car ,dont bother at the moment.

Hi Billy, re msg 20

time to get an Advocate well -versed in "TRNC" customs "laws"

Normally, I'd suggest asking Ismet, but I think he'd probably rather you bought two cars - rather than giving the RoC all the money ;)

Are you THERE Izzie ?

I did , Memtesh AZIZ, he is supposed to be the best, but after two meetings he seemed to loose interest. I dont think he saw much mileage in it for himself. He started by laughing at the customs office and saying there was nothing in law to prevent a EU subject from owning a S/Cyprus car in the north under EHR and international law and there was definately no law which could fine such a person. I have infact got two cars one north ,one south. I asked the customs what they would think if the south took my north car from me if I crossed the border with it , which I also do without ant problems. They could not answer this.

The problem is the police and the customs allow you to cross from south to north after inspecting your insurance but they dont say you are not allowed to do this because of the unwritten law.
