I have noticed that the shelves are getting emptier and emptier... Looks to be going the same way as others recently. Shame, because the Deli section is excellent, good in-store Bakery, all the staff are friendly and helpful etc, but I suppose that there are just too many Supermarkets per head of population. Keith.

What a comma can do (or how my English teacher in Holland taught us the importance of punctuation)... The pupil said, the school inspector is an ass. The pupil, said the school inspector, is an ass. Sorry, off topic again. I propose an one hour ban...

Reply to message 1. Keith, Stopped using some time ago due to the total indifference of the staff, particulary on the checkouts with the exception of 1 girl. Tried speaking to the manager re this but it was like trying to speak to someone who new what you were saying but did not want to acknowledge. So voted with my feet and do not go near unless a dire emergency. What goes round comes round!!!

Hi Chicadee If you are coming from the Girne area, you turn left at the Alsancak lady, (there is also a sign for sunny lane school). Carry on straight ahead, you'll find Atakara on the left hand side.

It would be a shame as we find their bakery section excellent. The fresh bread is to die for! But you are right when we we were in today the shelves were pretty empty looking.

People vote with their feet. The competition is far to stiff for them. Other supermarkets give better service and the correct change. Of course in typical Cypriot terms the owners will blame everyone else apart from themselves.

Haven't shopped there (Atakara) for ages. Ileli is the supermarket for me. Great selection of stuff, including Japanese, Thai and even Russian food as well as the usual Italian, Chinese and Indian. Really friendly staff, too. Starling is not bad either and they are both near The Pork Shop.

I can not verify the situation with Atakara either one way or the other but i would say this. Atakara is very well supported both by locals and ex pats it does have highs and lowes as regards produce but i think this is a matter of supply by the main importers. i also find it strange that some people have difficulty with the staff i have always found them helpfull especially the manageress but i supose you take people as you find them. Also atakara is only a small part of a very ritch and influentiall familys portfolia so i doubt it its going to close having said that i have probably sounded the death knell.

I would be really sad if this was to close. Like others have said the bakery is really good - wonderful apple pie. Found the majority of staff very very nice, always welcomed with a smile, which is not always my experience in other stores.

They have the best chicken in the area. I believed it is sourced from the nearby Riverside farm. We have enjoyed the best chicken in North Cyprus in Riverside restaurant.

Hipps For once I agree with one of your postings, Atakara aint going anywhere, they are successful and the only problem they have is the same as any other small supermarket and that is consistency of supplies. The staff are superb and I know some of the Atakara family and I often sit upstairs in the office talking to members of the family and they are happy with what they are achieving . I think that the supermarket with the biggest problem has got to be the new Astro just down the road. Also Dolmaci's is suffering. And yes Illelis is good but they are not doing the the trade they need to do to survive. AJ

RE msg 18, AJ : (...) And yes Illelis is good but they are not doing the the trade they need to do to survive. (...) ===> 1 :What do you mean, AJ? 2 : We support Ileli out of principle. Small, TC owned business, nice staff and a good choice of articles. And definitely not more expensive than the big ones. Come on, Ileli, you've got a lot of supporters!

AJ Well I'm pleased to hear it, I would be really sorry to see them go, but the lack of stuff on the shelves is getting to be a real pain - the other day I started off at Atakara, and had to continue at Starling, as at least half the items on my list were out of stock. Hardly One-stop shopping! - and it certainly would not encourage the casual shopper to return. Keith.
