Hi, I hope someone can help, there have been a few posts about where to get televisions etc, but I haven't actually read anywhere, that if we bring a tele from home will it work when we plug it in? Would love a confirmation.

hi goldfish you can take a tv from the u.k over to cyprus and simply plug it in because cyprus use the same plug system as the u.k and the same voltage so no need for a adapter you can do this with any electrical apliance but a word of advice if you are bringing a t.v make sure you pack it in a different box to its orignal box because the customs can get funny with you and might try and tax you big on a new set secondly cos cyprus do suffer from power cuts and surges it would be wise to buy a couple of surge masters you can buy these from argos and will protect your new tv because remember most makes guarentees dont cover surges and is not a worldwide guarantee regards ukturk

hi guys simbas dont worry we all go throu stages like that!!! lol what it is a lot of electrical goods come over from turkey and over here they only use 2 pin plug so back in the day north cyprus homes also had 2pin sockets but since then whole electric system was updated they only use 3pins in cyprus and now turkey send over products with this option and if not people just use a adaptor like poor old simbas lol regards to all ukturk p.s spud is right on all new homes the only 2 pin socket is for a telephone its quite strange that the u.k, cyprus and few old british empire countries use three pins and the rest of the world use 2pins that goes with a lot of other things too driving on the right- inches intead of cm - ounces intead of grams - pints instead of ml and the list goes on

Does that mean the appliance using a 2 pin plug is not earthed? (Top pin on a uk plugtop is earth) It doesn't need earthing if its all plastic but the hoover for eg must have some metal in it? I'd feel happier if it was mine that it was rewired or re pluged to earth it.

hi jamie boy lol the plugs of old was not earthed, but now all new and modern 2pin plugs come with a metal strip in the plug to act as the earth, for peace of mind you can rewire the plug by just choping the 2pin plug and putting a 3pin plug on or even better some electrical equipment come with detachable power lead all you do is replace the 2pin lead with a 3pin lead because they all work on the same voltage hope this helps regards to all ukturk

I wouldn't worry Pat, open the plug, if its 3 core and they havent used the green/yellow wire just rewire it with a normal plugtop - If it's only 2 core cable, just wear your Wellys when your hoovering! Erkan, I'd be interested to see how the old wiring used to work. I know I'm sad! Simbas, don't tell Paul he works for the HSE He will have your site closed down and baracaded off with yellow hazzard tape and cones when you need to hoover!

LOL dont worry you will be fine, you should come over here to turkey and see how it is, here they still use 2pin and only up to a few years ago they did not even have the metal strip on the plug and the sockets have not got switches james if you want to see how the old system is come over to turkey wait and ill take you deep into the villages its a miracle people dont die take care all ukturk |

We also had a lot of 2pin sockets all we did was change them over for 3pin problem solved. If you don't feel confident doing this yourself get an electrician to do it. It'll only take a few minutes but make sure you isolate the power at the main box before attempting to do anything on the main ring. Karen
