Just listened to an interesting programme "Taking a Stand" on R4. Not a million miles from TRNC problems relating to mass graves in Spain as a result of the civil war. I listen to the radio more than the tv and this programme prompted me to think what people listen to in Cyprus. I know our taxi driver listens to the Services Sports programmes from the South. What about world service or other progs? regards to all,Steve

Hi Steve I am an avid radio fan, I think it stimulates the mind more than TV. My listening is varied and includes the following, Radio China International, Voice of Russia, Voice of America, Radio Taiwan International, Radio Iran and many more that carry English programming. It is good to get a different perspective on world events. AJ

Hi Steve I like listening to British Forces which has Radio 4 Today programme from 9am to 11am on weekdays. You can listen whilst driving on 91.7FM (and also around 95FM) but the signal strength varies according to how close you are to the mountains. Also has Radio5 Live on Saturdays so you can catch live football commentary. Richb

Hi Guys, I like to keep in touch with World Affairs and I find that the Radio is the best medium for in depth analysis. For a change, I also find that ; http://www.spiegel.de ( English Site ) is very informative and gives a different slant on things. Mark

Hi. I usually bring a short wave radio with me when visiting TRNC but never have much lick picking anything up, I thought I would get BBC World Service - I'm always hopeful. Is this because it's blocked? if not does anyone know the frequency? Thankyou.

BRT Classic is lovely, on 93.4 FM. Plus the BBC World Serive on 1323 MW, sometimes the reception can be difficult. In Famagusta you can receive Radio Napa on 106.3, which plays oldies or BFBS 2 on 95.3. Nowadays I listen a lot to BBC Radio 2 on the realplayer, it also has listen again. Sam

re msg 7 Graham I'm sure Graham knows this, but no need for proxies, or such internet nonsense, to listen to BBC radio stations using iplayer.. that problem is confined to TV only... and when you get some decent speed over there may be my UK VPN connection will work.. Talking of which.. Iceman, as you've got ADSL, do you want to test out the VPN to se if BBC/ ITV is watchable? If you have a 1.8m dish you can get BBC Radios 1-4 on channels 0101- 0104 respectively on a SKY receiver... Sadly 5 Live and extra are on the weak satellite where BBC1,2, ITV etc are broadcast :(

Hi everyone, thanks for your info - do you take a portable radio with FM and short wave on,or buy one in TRNC? Reception used to be lousy on short wave - once remember Brian Johnson on TMS booming out on World Service in Porec,Yugoslavia .Happy days, cheers,Steve

Hi Steve1953 As far as shortwave goes most major international stations have more than one frequency that they broadcast on. The frequencies used depend on their target areas and the time of day. Any shortwave broadcasters of note will have a website that will explain the frequencies and target areas that they broadcast on and broadcast times etc. I have not seen any decent shortwave radios for sale in the TRNC so you would be better off buying from a specialized dealer in the UK. If you need any more help then please feel free to e-mail me. AJ

The medium wave transmissions are the most consistent, although you may need an external arial , depending on your location. FM is fine on the South side of the coastal mountain range, with patchy reception elsewhere. You would do better to take a good quality radio with you, anything decent will cost you an arm and a leg locally - and that's assuming that you can find something decent! A simple long wire arial will enhance SW reception, but note that the frequencies change throughout the day. Keith,
