I am amazed at all the shop builds that are happening here, do you think the builders know something we aren't aware of, see quite a few estate agents have closed down also. On another note, happened upon a large supermarket in Lefkosia today, it is on 3 floors. The Metropole, and it was buzzing, mainly locals, Pizzyburger cafe on top floor, wouldn't reccomend the chicken burger, dried up and tough as leather, fries were nice though

Remember over a year ago someone was bored enough to do a count and it was close to 180 either built or in progress. How many supermarkets do we need? Odds on Astro at Alsancak closing within next 3 months? Not long ago there were no Eczanes on main road Alsancak/Lapta, when the one next to Jafeca/Rivada opens we will have three! Not sure on accuracy but from Cypriot, those that did not sell land for housing applied to build a shop unit. That permission has a time limit on it so they still build the places in hope.

When we moved here in 2006 there was an empty shop next to the smart furniture shop in Karaoglanoglu the landlord wanted £1200 a month at the time. Surprisingly its still empty two and a half years later.

Msg 9, - and I think that you get a grant for building a shop. Could make it more profitable to build a shop than run one! Keith.

They have just started digging a big hole opposite Green Garage which will probably be more unwanted shops.

It does appear to me that the TC cunning retail business plan is 'Ooh look, a shop/restuarant/bar doing well, I know how to make money, I'll open up exactly the same next door, must work if that one is...'

Or if a Restaurant happens to have a succesful season, the landlord thinks, 'hey up' I can squeeze more rent out of this Geezer, he is doing well, then the next season is a bad one and 'Geezer' can't afford rent, hence another empty unit.

Can anyone explain just why the notion of actually reducing prices and making some money, (as opposed to the almost universal Cypriot put prices up when times are hard) seems such total non starter?

Heard about the local who "sold" his restraunt to a couple of niave Brits, £30000 down plus 20% of weekly takings. Obviously went bust and were deported. Sorry will not provide any more details other than beware and keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Msg.10 Ataturk, You are quite right, they wanted 1200 pounds per month and it has been empty ever since it was built. Funny enough my daughter's shop Smart Plus had three shops joined together and they were paying something in that region for each shop. Would you believe it, the landlord had the cheek to ask for a rise!!!They moved to Catalkoy road just before Lemar and now the landlord has all four shops vacant. Best of ...... luck to him. ismet

Hey Elko - i didnt realise your daughter owned Smart+ We bought all of our furniture from her. I hope her business is doing OK in these testing times. I have to say, your family and her staff (Naz etc) are all excellent and really understand customer service - they cannot do enough for you. We had a slight problem with a piece of furniture and it was immediately sorted out without question (quite a few months later) The quality of the furniture is fantastic and it all looks great as well - very stylish - I would have no hesitation in recommending your company !!
