Hi there,

We are looking to travel south whilst over in the Summer, our destination is Protaras area from Esentepe and wondered if someone could give us the best options for travel.

Have only used the Pyla Crossing and that seems a little far for us, i know there are other crossings in Famagusta and Azios Nikolaos, would anyone be able to recommend a route for us.

Thanks ever so much

SarahLou

Hi SarahLou

We drove alongside the fence that surrounds Varosha/Maras at Famagusta and came across a border crossing which must be quite close to Protaras.

I am sure some of the more knowledgeable members on here will post some more information for you in due course.

Hi Sarahlou

If I was travelling from Esentepe I would use the Pyla crossing as it would be the quickest way (turn left on the motorway south side and follow the signs).

If you do want to use the crossing at Famagusta, I can give detailed directions?

Hi Sarah Lou

I have made this journey several times and would take the Famagusta crossing. The only problem is finding it for the first time when crossing from the South.

Dear Sarah Lou

The most scenic route is over the Mountains to Famagusta, heading for the Palm Beach hotel, Maras/Varosha ghost twon - southern end of Famagusta at you'll come to a roundabout at the south-western most point of the old city walls... you'll see a sign post for Larnaca off the roundabout.

This leads to the Ayios Nicholaios ( St Nick) / Black Knight / Four mile / two mile crossing point closest to Ayia Napa / Protaras.

Make sure you have insurance for the car in the south - or if not - don't turn up too early or late. This crossing point is onto the SBA ( Sovereign British Area) and you will be dealt with by GC and / or TC officials working for the MOD - NOT RoC officials.

Good luck !

From Esentepe take the coast road towards Tatislu and then over the mountains to Gecitkale. Turn right at the T junction and then left after the Mosque (signed for the airport).

Keep on going until you get to the Lefkosa-Gazimagusa highway and turn left.

At the first traffic Island in Famagusta, turn right (signed Larnaka). Go straight on at the first and second small islands and turn right at the third. This will take you to the crossing.

Once through the crossing keep straight on through the Army base and keep going until you see a petrol station on your left. Take the second left (only about 50m) signed for Frenaros.

Once in Frenaros turn left towards Dherynia and Paralimini. Once through Dherynia look for a large white and red Cyta mast on your right and then take the next left at the Y junction.

Keep on going, through the traffic lights near the Police station and following the road to the right at the really bad bend. You will end up at a T junction near Orphanides, turn le

You will end up at a T junction near Orphanides, turn left.

Go to the bottom of this road, and at the Island turn right.

Protaras is a couple of miles ahead, but is a long stringy town with lots of small centres. The main bit is accessed by turning left when you see the Sphinx and the McDonalds sign.
