Dear Alano re msg 1 Sorry to hear about your situation. Your options: 1/ Big dish 4.2m and UK TV channels for free - and you can subscribe to SKY 2/ Combination of 2 x 1m dishes aimed at Hotbird and Nilesat - again free, but limited number of channels - unless you subscribe to SHOWTIME - a Dubai TV channel 3/ Digiturk - pay TV 4/ UK TV via the internet.. 5/ another "hacked" system that is only as good as the hackers are finding it harder to cope with new moves by the REALLY "peed" off pay tv companies who have to deal with companies that "claim" they were legit suppliers..

Hi Snakes, re msg 5 Not a daft Q When I live in Cyprus I set up something called a VPN, to allow me to connect to my UK connection - I then showed a UK IP address and was able to use the BBC/ ITV/ C4/ Five / SKY websites. I had so many folk who saw it working I made a hobby biz from it.. It isn't a substitute for a big dish, but it works.. I even allow folk to test it for up to 48 hours before buying !

mmmmmm, as you clearly know a lot abut this - and you're an IT guy and all - I hope you won't mind if I go slightly off-topic. What else I might be able to achieve with a 4.2m dish (apart from getting in the Guinness Book of Records for cooking the most stir fry)? Could I sign up to SKY and get a TV/broadband/phone package, for instance? I'm guessing there's no technical impediment to SKY offering such a service in TNRC but I have no idea if they do - or whether other companies might offer a similar bundle.

Dear Croft re msg 11 The broadband SKY offer is via a UK BT phone line using ADSL The phone package is using the BT line :( SKY don't offer the service out side UK / IRL. They cannot knowingly supply - as they haven't got the TV rights beyond those territories. BUT they re happy to take business in the UK / IRL and it is reckoned 20% of their biz is "overseas" .. this is called "grey market" piracy.. and is not frowned on as the EU want TV across "borders".. The technical impediment is getting a new contract or multiroom box to work if it ain't kept plugged into a UK phone line. Esp SK+ / HD.. Once the kit is a year old, no problem. SKY don't insist on the phone line, only for multiroom.. Some "get away with it" - others get the dreaded letter asking for the unit to be plugged in to the tel line.

Hi mmmmmm, I am having probs with re-newing showtime within the trnc. I am looking for a different appoach to satallite, can you expand on this MSG 6 and a vpn? Also if you are internet connected for your TV this obviously rellies on a continuous feed from my ISP? (This is not relliable at the moment as it drops out faster and more often than ******)

Hi Rowan, msg 13 You could approach CiH and see how he gets Showtime.. most Dealers get cards via Arab countries.. Concerning the VPN .. go to http://www.uktvabroad.com and request a test account. As I said it is NOT as good as having a 4.2m, but at least you can get reasonable quality ..

Msg 12. Thanks for the precise and detailed answer mmmmmm. It would be easy enough for me to 'season' a SKY box for a year until it doesn't need a telephone line. That would give me as much English language TV as I could ever want - and some on top. Sadly, that doesn't look like a strategy for a solid broadband connection. (I mean what could possibly have gone wrong? Satellites colliding?!)

Dear Croft re msg 15 You CAN get 2 way Sat broadband - using a 1.2m dish - Iceman has installed a few.. and then all phone calls and traffic goes via the "bird" If you are running a biz in a rural area of CY - it is a useful option - esp when shared. As I'm in the biz I know a way how a NEW SKY receiver can be "seasoned" ;)
