Turtle:

''I prefer Girne ?''

Whısper ıt, but Kyrenıa and Girne are one and the same.

Turkish-speakers say ''Girne'' and Englısh speakers say ''Kyrenia''. Or they should do, to avoid sounding ridıculous. Greeks say ''Κερύνεια'' (Kerıneia).

How many Brıts say ''Paree'' or ''Munchen'' rather that Parıs or Munıch? It's as bad as some sorry jokers referring to an amphıbıous and airborne mılitary ınvasion as a ''peace operatıon''.

Let's not be silly here.

You can't help yourself can you, if you don't agree have a dig !

Make a deal with yourself in 2009

Ask yourself sometimes not everybody is going to join your posse, accept that sometimes some people are not going to accept what you say or believe that what you say is right.

Then you may get some respect from fellow posters.....but then again perhaps you don't care.........................Im off to bed enjoy your break in NC and don't forget while you are there don't forget to help the Norths ecomomy !

The correct name is Kyrenia the name used by Tc's and because Hippo said it is.

Girne sounds like bottom noises.

Excuse me i have just Girne'd

Was that you who Girne'd?

Bad smell of Girne around here today.

Kyrenia sounds much more attractive.

Where did you go on your holidays?

I went to Girne.

Oh I went to the attractive town of Kyrenia nestelled under the flanks of St. Hillereion.

With its ancient harbour surrounded by quaint taverna's a place where time stands still.

Hippo,

now you mention it - the way Girne is pronounced by a lot of expats (Gernie) does sound like a facial contortionist!

Thanks to you, I will now have this image pop into my head every time anyone says it.

Keith.

lived near 'kygirnerenia' harbour few years ago. came back with mum as she had stroke, but sold up and got place in lapta near rose garden. quieter. we had a lot of people passing by before, it was busy all the time. much prefer lapta, but love the harbour
