| Just watched an interview this morning (15/02/2009, 0600hrs UK time), on the BBC about Turkey joining the EU, two MEP's were in Turkey being interviewed after a round of meeting with MP's from the Turkish goverment and all parties concerened. A summary of the interview is that unless Turkey reform it's human rights act and reforms the way that the Military control the goverment, then Turkey may not be allowed to join the EU, also metioned was the recomendation/reforms that were recomended to the Turkish goverment were to be accepted/instigated/reviewed, then the EU could say enough is enough and not allow Turkey into the EU because of the lack of willingness to move forward. The sumary of the interview is that it may get to the point where Turkey pulls out of the EU negotiations, the EU MEP's also belive that president Obama will have a great influence in pusuading Turkey to join the EU, staying with the west. and not joining the easten alliances, against the west. | I agree with Dee's sentiments and do not care if spellngi is a bit off, please stick to the thread cyprusfox. Also think Turkey have no intention of joining they are playing political games to achieve what is best for them. |

Turkey has for some time had asspirations to become part of the EU. She clearly has become a more significant and desirable catch for the EU, USA and the West in general due to its proximity to the Middle Eastern influence. However it is not one way traffic. Turkey has significant reliance upon trade with other EU states and will is anxcious to maintain, develop and secure this line of economic benefit.

msg 1 similar remarks from mep's and european leaders are well-known however politicians and voters from several eu states have repeated time and again they think full turkish membership of the eu is "inappropriate" membership talks are stalled at present, partly due to technical manoevers by greece and south cyprus yet this old chestnut surfaces time and again on cyprus 44: why? I would say there two reasons- firstly the turks say they want to join and '44 forum members are generous secondly and I'm very much afraid it is only their clutching at straws, greek cypriots who feel they lost out after the partition events in 1974, argue that turkey would be oblidged to leave cyprus should it join the eu but it is clear that they understand turkey even less now than before turkey's army were welcomed by the mass of turkish cypriots and that's about it andre

Turkey will join the eu ,if turkey wants . its all about the role turkey plays as first line of defence towards the middle east . The fact that "new" oil and gas pipelines now come through turkey to feed europe is a clear intention of the future . why would any country want to join the "christian club" other than money ? kav

Dear Andre re msg 8 "talks are stalled .. partly due to .. greece and south cyprus" and YOU talk about folk not understanding Turkey?!.. 1/ HOW many times must I say it? GREECE WANTS Turkey in the EU... it has largely washed it's hands of Cyprus by getting it in the EU- GR wants another country to the EAST to be responsible for policing the EU frontiers. Greece realises the long-term benefits of having TR on side. 2/ Cyprus... the "rump" RoC can remain quiet on TR .. as TR FOOLISHLY signed up to a protocol and then tried to tie it to the CY Question... The danger to TR's entry to the EU lies with TR itself - not recognising that its traditional way of negotiating ain't gonna work with the EU.. esp with France and NL, Austria and may be even Germany. OK, so what if TR doesn't join? Who needs the partnership, the "union" more? .. TR is more likely to break up into two or even three nations longterm if it stays out of the EU.

My thoughts ( for what they are worth? )....is that we are all in a win win situation....if we join, fine, we will profit financially, if not.....we will profit with a secure, unharrased existance.

So what happens then when Turkey joins the EU and therefore so will North Cyprus? Will the Cypriots welcome all the other EU nationals that can then live and work in Cyprus as of right i.e. Turks, English, Romanians, Poles etc etc?

Dear Stewart re msg 14 If Turkey doesn't join the EU - I'll assume this will be tied to a "no deal" situation in Cyprus - what makes you think the ECHR cases against Turkey will go away ? LOSE, lose is t'other scenario.. you have taken a punt on several properties in "TRNC" so this is your gamble... if the properties are on disputed land. Whether TR joins or not... TR can't walk away from it's legal obligations.

Dear Andre / Dave B / Rowlo re msg 12/ 13 / 15 OK, scenario: TR doesn't join the EU.. Kurds to the east, "progressive" secular European leaning TR to the west and more fundamental Muslim centre. We have a long-term recession and disappointment in a previously popular govt that loses it's way .. The idea of a three way split is a TR academic acquaintance's idea, a guy who has lived in "TRNC" and is quite pragmatic... !

I belive at the end of the day, this is out of our hands, politicians being politicians, will as normal screw it it without our help anyway, because of their own personel agendas, and what they can get out of it, not what is right for NC and the people who live here. RD
