having payed my friends tax for her last week when she let her apartment long term, it was an eye opener, the contract had to be stamped this cost about £40 and several trips back & forward, then 10% of the gross income had to be payed to the tax office, the man in the tax office and i were talking and he said not many people were paying tax but they were going after them this year, I was surprised how easy it was to find out who is letting their villa / apartment, he told me they use the web a lot and check letting agencies local and internet, so i gave it a go, and yes it is so easy, just bring up, say the one that advertises on this site, there it is with prices and availability, I calculated just 1 and they have showing it booked for 178 days this year with income of £2450, oh well the tax office has just made £245 for 10 mins work and an official letter.

Yesterday my neighbour received a bill, that related to the previous owners, for last year. It calculated they had 7,400 TL rent for the year and then showed the 10 % tax due. The property was rented but not all year and they did not get that amount of income, suppose they must have found out and estimated/charged for the full year anyway!

I would have thought that they would add on a penalty for late payment / evasion, otherwise everyone would just wait until caught - there would be no incentive to pay voluntarily and on time...

looking at a calender booking does not prove anything , what about if the calender showed property was booked, but those dates the owners themselves were staying there . This is not to say that taxes should not be paid of course they should .

My neighbour had a rental company round last week (and these lot are a big players in property rental over here) - the subject of rental tax came up and the bird from the rental company said "most of our client's don't bother paying it".

Absolute God's honest - almost like it was an optional extra you could decide to pay or not....

With an atitude like that, they deserve to be caught and fined.....

You could lay odds on some responses, the tax office are not interested in 'what if' or 'prove anythings' the fact is if you do not register or declare, the tax office will estimate based on the evidence they have "end of story" this is not good old england.

Kiethcaley yes they also have late payment penalties, the courts here always allow these penalties to be added on.

Spide couldn't agree more, tight and ducks spring to mind

Nick, your last line says it all

The tax man was in Karsiyaka earlier this week knocking on doors that had hired cars outside and asking if they were the owners of the property and taking names. Some owners are going to get a shock when they arrive here at the airport only to find the police want a chat.

Laxy days , obviosly you missed my last sentence !!!! YES all should pay taxes on any letting where money is taken for rental , my point being , no you should not have to pay tax if you are staying in the property yourself . And yes you should register if you intend to rent out .

I DO agree, why should it be different in TRNC than uk or france ? when people want to make money with a property they should respect the country's regulation or not be surprised when they get cought !
