Geordies are well-known for braving the cold weather in skimpy clothing and it could be because they have thicker skin than people in other parts of the country.

This is one of the theories scientists are investigating as they try to find out if the Toon hardiness is anything more than a myth.

Newcastle has a reputation for being a fun-loving city where on a night out many women dress in mini skirts, crop tops and high heels, while men battle freezing temperatures in nothing more than a T-shirt and trousers.

Geordies are being asked about their coat wearing behaviour in an online questionnaire as experts try to find out whether they are naturally warmer than their Southern counterparts.

Are the Geordies just tougher than the rest of us?

No1..Its the same here in Stoke-on-Trent.They walk around half naked in the winter, and we can get some cold weather here.I think with the Geordies its what they are used to.,bit like living in hot climates ,after a while you get acclimatised to the cold and it does not seem to bother them as much...

DN - It says much about Sunderland when a Mackem has to have a night out in the Toon - I hope you didn't find any keys when you were there!!!!

Well Jimmy

Will have to give you the benefit of the doubt, my lad lives in Jesmond and treats his Dad on the Toon when I'm back, entertainment value 100% sorry to say Sunderland will never be a patch on it while we have a council full of numbskulls and a town full of DHSS dipsticks, your only problem is the way the dipsticks breed Newcastle will be overan so enjoy while you can.

How about - No sense, no feeling???? Pretty good laugh though watching the "girlies" - anything from 14 to 74 - skid about in sky scraper heels in sub zero temps. Only place I know of where madam can skid, teeter, fall flat on her backside and still hang on to her curry and chips.

Spent many a happy summer in Gateshead in my youth. Every morning up to the baths on coatsworth road at 7am, bloody cold. After across to the A1 cafe for a gravy dip my cousin always had the dripping dip. On a good day a brisk walk doon the team valley, again bloody cold and on a really good day a trip to Blackhall colliery which surprise surprise was bloody cold.

If anyone saw Get Carter they`ll know what I mean!

Later in my youth the in place was the Azure Blue and it`s famous landlord Viv.

The baths were/are on Alexandra road and I assume the cafe you are talking about was the cosy cafe.

I used to frequent the Azure Blue myself, shame when Viv got done in by some idiot.

Swyflot,

So it was YOU in the sea at Whitley Bay!

I sometimes stayed at a friend's Penthouse (aka 'attic flat') between the Royal Hotel and the amusement arcade on the corner. We would stand looking out of the window on New Year's day at the loonies in the sea...

Keith.

Being born on Felling on Tyne, I would certainly say the Geordies are tougher than the rest, but I cant say that about their Football team

Mountain edge..Wonder if those baths were the same ones I used to go whenI was about 12.We travelled from Chester-le- Street on a Saturday morning to be there for about10am. Had twohours in the swimming pool then we used to go to a little cafe and have bread bap dipped in onion gravy and a cup of oxo.The whole day out used to cost my mum and dad2/6d. We always tried to get on a UNITED double deckerbecause they had these long bench type seats across the bus and they were quite fast for that time.I suppose everything has been flattened now.Saw the film Get Carter great movie....

Coachie - no that was Locking. We were Admin Apps, Clerk GD, Suppliers (me) and Pay Accountants.

I left TRNC almost a year ago after my marriage collapsed, moved to Bavaria as I had ex-TRNC friends here.

Now met another partner and moved 140 miles to be with her, but still in Bavaria.

But I will visit TRNC when I get a chance (probably be arrested for not renewing my residency!).

email me on eltsinthesun@gmail.com if you feel like it, maybe we can have a few beers sometime.

Coachie, the Shipcote baths are still there and the gravy dips bring back some fond memories. I was at the premiere of the Get Carter film at the ABC cinema in the Haymarket. The iconic car park in Gateshead is about to be flattened any day now - shame but it really is an eyesore.

Yes the baths are still there and are now an annex of a leisure centre. The place is closed at the minute for a full refurb. It needed it, to be honest, as the only changes that there have been from the 60's are the changing rooms. A lovely place.

You are right about the Multi Storey car park, it is a carbuncle and we will be well rid of it, although that isn't the opinion of everybody. I remeber when they shot the film and the body was flung off the top there were many calls made to the police because they thought it had actually happened. Not a lot of people know that.

There was supposed to be a night club on the very top but it never ever got opened. I wonder why?
