I am trying to find accurate instructions from Larnaca to Esentepe via what I think is Azios Nikolaos, Strovilia, or Akyar crossing. Can anyone help, its worth a couple of beers if I make it safely and a bottle of wine if i do it without getting lost LOL

Hello berty,

not sure but i think you may be reffering to the british eastern soverign base also known as the azios nikolas crossing.i personally have never crossed this way but have always used the metehan crossing and found it very easy and never got lost.from larnaca it takes about an hour, and very good roads.Just follow the signs for girne/kyrennia and leave the motorway at j2 sign posted troodos mountains and kyrennia/girne.The crossing is also known as the agios dometios.Hopefuly uk turk will see this post and give you directions from the famagusta crossing.

Regards.

Paul.

I have crossed the Agios Nikolaos border several times this year, but from the Protaras/ Deryneia area which is very close. If you are driving from Larnaca I think the quickest route would be to use the crossing point at Pyla, about 15 min drive from Larnaca.

From Larnaca airport turn left, at second roundabout turn right following signs for A3 Agia Napa, join A3 (right turn), continue until you see sign for Pyla, I think its between junctions 58 & 59 and this will bring you straigt to the border.

Once through border continue straight ahead untill you come to DORTYLOL, where you cross the main road from Famagusta to Lefkosia, ypu can't miss a large Mosque at this junction. Go straigt ahead signposted Gecitkale (airport), then after about 10 mins you will come to a T junction, with some sort of electric power staton type structures on your right. Take a right turn here, about 2km there is a large petrol station on your left, turn left here and you are on the new road that takes you all the way to the costal road from Talisu to Kyrenia (20 mins drive) When you have got to where you can see the sea after dropping down the hills, turn left at the first junction, and this will take you directly to Esentepe area.

If you need directions via the Famagusta/Agios Nicholaos route just let me know.

Hope this helps

Whenever we fly into Larnace we use the Nicosia crossing as we find it quicker to get to Esentepe.

It's a much nicer drive through Pyla/Famagusta, not as much traffic, and the border crossing at Famagusta is not as busy.

Then there's the view as you drop down from the hills and see the coastline!

Many thanks for the directions. Is this the quckest way to get from Larnaca to Esentepe then? I have received several directions now and am confused as to which is the quickest and/or shortest

Hi Boredhousewife

We are right up in the actual village, Esentepe. Turn right at the Tumba and follow the road up to the top. We are on the left overlooking the ravine.

The Pyla and Nicosia crossings are the quickest, of the two, Pyla is a nicer drive and the roads are quieter.

We have found the border crossing at Famagusta easier, but is a longer drive from Larnaca but handy if you wish to call at the large supermarket (Carrefour at Paralimni)

The route via Nicosia can be very busy with traffic, because you touch the outskirts of the City, and also have to go through Kyrenia.

Does anyone know if North Cyprus is on the verge of being GPS friendly?

Hi Tim10

GPS works in N.Cyprus but most of the maps are out of date.

I have used all the various routes mentioned, I can recommend SUNTANMAN's route.

I am not sure wether this crossing provides vehicle insurance cover for the North ( if required) ?

Pyla is by far the quickest entry point to the TRNC for getting to Esentepe

Hi dodger,

Yes I mean from Larnaca, it is basically a straight road right up the motorway to the crossing. Then turn left at the Lefkosa/Magousa Rd aND THEN RIGHT AT THE ROUNDABOUT THAT GOES OVER THE MOUNTAINS TOWARDS ARAPKOY!

Suntanman, what are they like going back over, are they as strict as the customs in Nicosia ie. do they open suitcases/bags etc. check for cigs and stuff.

Is there an insurance booth for getting north insurance at the Pyla crossing point? How much does it cost?

Yes, but it isn't open 24 hours. I think it was 30 euros ( for 1 month) last time we drove over with a southern hire car (May 2008)

Watch out for the speed cameras on the Greek side just south of Pyla.

Just to add one thing to suntanman's directions... there is a small "one-horse dorp" of a village before the T junction and you need to turn sharp right by (in front of) the Kose (Corner) Market... otherwise you've left the route Berty has given you...

Glad you made it... it's a good route, apart from the 10 metres with no tarmac half way along one part of it...

The good thing it the traffic is light and plenty of passing opportunities...

One thing to watch out for is police who occasionally set-up shop along the stretch before Gecitkale and on the other side just after Pyla..

corbytown,

Not quite sure what time it closes, maybe if Arry reads this post he can update, as I am sure he crossed the border recently when the booth was closed, but managed to get insurane somehow.

Berty,

Pleased the directions were ok. and you made it safely across.
