Wanting a good Indian meal the other night we thought we would take some friends out for a birthday treat to Jashans as it seems to have a good reputation. What a bad move that was.

To make this brief, I'll just list the complaints :-

Freezing cold, man on next table wearing a sheepskin coat while eating !

Surly, disinterested waiting staff.

Tiny pots for the mint yoghurt, mango chutney dips. The pots were no bigger than thimbles - between four.

First course onion bahjis dry with no accompanying sauce, first time I have ever experienced this.

main course - One plate of rice between the four of us, the 'Naan' was not a big fluffy naan which we are all used to , but bits of pitta !

At the end of the meal there were no little chocolates and no hot towels.

What an all round disapointment, we will never darken their doors again and would advise others to do the same, unless they like throwing money away.

I look forward to hearing of your similar experiences !

Hi Martin I can't really comment specifically on Jashans as I don't go there that often but I will say that none of the Indian restaurants here (in my experience) give little chocolates and hot towels. I think that is more of a UK thing.

As for the restaurant being cold then I agree that is very poor at this time of year and I trust you brought this and your other complaints to the attention of the staff.

If you want a great curry with superb rice in a nice warm environment, then you cannot go far wrong with The Courtyard. Been there twice recently and really enjoyed our meal with a roaring log fire and I would actually drive there from Karsiyaka for the rice alone!!

To be honest with you Martin, these are pinickity complaints -

As has been said - you can ask for more chutneys/sauces and to go with the lovely crispy onion bhaji, and you can ask for more rice, which is never a problem.

The staff are really fine - they just don't pester you!

Naan's - what you're used to? - where? - you are in Cyprus, they are not bad, they are just different!

Oh diddums - no little chocolates or hot towels!

You usually get a brandy on the house, which won't melt in the normal warm/hot temperatures though.

Anyone would think you had got terrible food poisoning from an awful curry or something, the way you started this 'out of order' thread

This is your narrow minded opinion - you shouldn't be telling other people not to go there.

'Never to darken their doorstep again' - well good, they don't need customers like you!

We regularly visit Jashans and have never had a bad meal there. The staff are always charming and very helpful, they are only too glad to bring more chutney etc should you ask. As for it being cold in there, many places struggle to keep the place warm in the winter but again if you ask staff will bring a gas heater to warm you through. If people have issues with restaurants why don't they bring it to the managers attention at the time instead of moaning on a BB after the fact, that won't achieve anything.

we have been to Jashans quite a few times and although we agree about the "small pots" and last time it was a little chilly always found the staff very curtious and friendly ! the food we think is quite good as far as "foreign curries" go and it is good to experience different adaptions of our favourite dishes ! it would be a shame if all "curry houses" were the same and a little boring !

I am sorry you didnt enjoy your evening " we had a similar experience at Efendi having been highly recommended by many but will go back soon as we feel it may have been just an "off" night

Mrs Snakes- The Courtyard is in Karakum, going east out of Girne on the main coast road you will find the Courtyard on the right hand side.

Msg 10 - I'm not being spiteful - I'm just defending Jashans. Martin was telling people not to go there, which is unfair, especially as it was for reasons that if he had just asked the staff, could have been resolved!!

I've just been honest and he did ask for peoples comments!

Hope you do go and see for yourself and look forward to your comments as well.

I must reply to two people.

Bootz, I don't want to be asking for extra food all through my meal, and if you think i am just comparing this to England , you are wrong, I've eaten Indian food all over the world, including TRNC, my comparisons are based on these.

Kibris, you may live in a shadowy world where everyone has hidden agendas, Idon't I just like to speak the truth, as I see it. As for it being my first post, whats your point ?

May we ask the cost of your meal Martin ...?

Did it offer you good value ?

We have been many time to Jashans, and we have always had , good service, ggod food, a good deal price wise, and when I am cold, they always 'stike the fire up for us and off a shrug.

I think the Admin/Moderators should not allow one and the same person (postings 1 and 14) use two nicknames - especially not when the first post seems only aimed to damage a commercial reputation.

PS. Yesterday my wife and I and two friends had an(other) excellent meal at Jashan's.

6 of us went to Jashan's on Saturday night and we all enjoyed the food. Rice was in abundance and we were encouraged to ask for more of anything. Service with a smile and I had to move away from the fire because it was too hot. I don't believe any Indian restaurant does proper tandoori naans over here but we enjoyed the stuffed parathas that they served, again in abundance. Can't fault it for value for money, approx. 18TL per head for popadoms, curry, rice, 'naan'. Agree that it's not quite the same as in UK but that doesn't really detract from the enjoyment.

I remember some years ago that cream was not available in NC. The only Indian food I liked in UK was, generally, cooked with cream. I don't know whether this has changed. But surely, at the end of the day, one person's idea of a good meal (Indian or otherwise) will never be another's.

It's purely a matter of taste. I must admit, one of the best Indian meals I have ever eaten was during a visit to Stratford on Avon - so, supposedly, the best curry is found in the Midlands? Or Southall? Or Bradford? Or anywhere there is a large Indian population?

It's purely a matter of taste and what quality of food you're used to.

as regular customers at Jashans we are astounded at the negative comments made against them. We have lived here for 3 years and never experienced a bad meal at Jashans. The staff are extremely friendly and will always bring more dips, rice etc if required. Regarding the naan bread, as we all know living in North Cyprus you cannot always get the same as in the UK, isnt that why we are all here?

another fantastic meal at Jashans last night. The fire was roaring also and heaters were placed by tables when requested and the place was full!! No shortage of rice, dips and the garlic naans were lovely. Abbas is doing a good job of keeping the restaurant going during Riaz's abscence.

I find it incredible if not amusing that someone from the UK can criticize an Indian meal that is served in the TRNC.

I would like to ask them, if they can explain here on this site what is a typical Indian meal, I honestly think that will be impossible!

Most indian meals that are served/cooked outside of India bare very little resemblance to the meals that are served in India or are eaten by Indians, therefore I would suggest that anyone who complains should first state where they are from or where they regularly eat Indian meals, at least they can then say that the Indian meal they have just had/eaten is not like the Indian they are used to being served from X area i.e. their point of comparison.

I have eaten Meals in so called Indian restaurants in 4 continents and they have all been different, even when they advertise the same meal headings.

Are the people who cook the meals from the north or the south of India, or are they from Bangladesh ( where the majority of c

I would suggest that whoever is involved should first complain to the restaurant in question and if they get no satisfaction they can can then vent their fury or dissatisfaction on the forum.

I know everyone is different but we have enjoyed a number of great meals at Jashan's - infact we travel from Esentepe on a regular basis to go there.

Whilst i haven't tried it during the winter months i would suggest you return just to give them another chance as we are always made feel welcome and they cater for the non-indian food lovers too......

Go on, give them another try...

I love Jashans in the winter! I get up & stoke the fire & if needed, toss a few more logs on. The waiters & owners don't mind a bit. If I can't get near the fire when it is busy, they bring a gas heater. The pots are small, but as said before, they are only too happy to bring extra. The chicken jalfreze is to die for there, never had a bad one yet. Definately my fave Indian restaurant on the island.

Message 40 I think you will find people in Bradford, Leicester and Birmingham may dis agree.

Has earlier posts have said the traditional meals we eat in yhe UK are not usually found on the Indian Sub continent. The meals depend on the chef - where he or she is from and their take on a dish.
