I am coming over to NC in April for a week. When I have been across previously I have stayed at the Pia Bella and it has been great. However I fancy a change and have good reports about the Ship Inn. Perhaps location not quite as good as Pia Bella Any thoughts!

Linus - I believe (I may be wrong) that the Ship was closed for refurbishment. It may well have re-opened now. I'm sure there are some loyal fans on here who will give you some sound advice. Friends of ours have stayed there and have spoken very highly of it. We've eaten there and found it excellent.

Best wishes

Linus,

Stick with the Pia Bella. As you say better location, also better quality.Stayed at both and would have to choose the Bella,

Linus, I would have to agree with Dodger, The Pia Bella is my favourite in every way, except however I found the menu and the food choice for the evening meal to be average. It has changed from all of my many previous visits.

I was impressed on a visit to the Ship inn on my last trip back in Oct 2008, I think the rooms let it down....but I believe they are undergoing refurbishment?

I have tried both the Pine Bay Club and Simena club...had a great time at both and staff/food very good.

BUT!!! Pia Bella is my first choice.....I would however like to try the Malpas 5 * that looks superb....and offering free half board upgrade with some holiday companies.

Good Luck!

Isn't the Ship the only place Wyn stays at?

Well if it's good enough for Wyn, it must be good.

I understand they also run a boxing school from there or something similar.

Which may come in handy if Wynn/the Wicks and Dee are all staying there simultaneously! LOL

Pie Bella food has changed a bit, we stayed for 4 weeks over Christmas New Year and had booked half board, we were dissapointed with some of the meals, we were being served chips and frozen carrots & peas with everything so we asked for boiled pots and mash and fresh veg and fair enough we started to get them. Found with the Pia Bella they will listen to you when you complain, my husband is diabetic and on a low fat diet so they gave him skimmed milk, low fat cheese and margarine also jam with no sugar, you only need to ask and you get. Good value for me.

We have stayed at the Ship three times, but the last time, in Nov 08, the food was poor. It may have been a change in Chef for a short period. We are visiting in May and staying at the Pia Bella.

Aye, the ship is a fine place, we stayed a couple of times, and I have fond memories from there. Free wifi too so you can keep abreast of happenings.

Hi Linus,

I have stopped at The Ship Inn now on 6 occaisions. I have enjoyed every moment. It is a very comfortable hostelry, much frequented by The Ex Pat fraternity. That says much to me!

Dinner on the terrace on a balmy night, is a real treat for the romantic( with love in their hearts. )( I must bring the wife next time) The service is excellent. Zube the head waiter presides over the Restaurant, and ensures compliance with International Standards.

I travel extensively in mainland China, where I usually stay at 5 star Hotels, absolutely wonderful, but never have I enjoyed the comfort and relaxed atmosphere, as I have at The Ship. I reccommend it unconditionally!

I have stayed at the Malpas for a couple of days last year. First class. Drinks very expensive compared to the Pia Bella but only in line with a 5 star hotel

Hi Wynn

Thanks for the info. Some mixed feedback in general but I guess you dont go back 6 times unless you are happy. Anyway I have booked now only to find they are offering a 20% special discount so there prices are extremely competetive. I have been to the hotel once at Xmas but only for a drink but met a few friendly people. Seemed to have a lively atmosphere

Hope you enjoy your time at Ship Inn. We stayed there on our first trip over 7 years ago and a few times since, last time in July 08 and at that stage it was very tired and I didn't think the staff were as friendly as they were before. Hopefully the refurb will have improved it. Head waiter Ali was great, not sure where he is now.

Stayed in Pia Bella last year and preferred it! More central, bigger rooms, nicer surroundings.

Aye, John Cooper, fit like loon??

Had a fine time in the company of yourself and Julie, certainly enjoyed the banter, and thanks for guiding me to this forum, full of information, most of it useless like, but enjoyed the read, and seeing mention of the good ship Ship decided to put in my two penny worth.

Delonghi, I wouldnt stay at the Ship if it was free, it has to be the worst place here, full of drunken, loud idiots...the rooms are uncomfortable and scruffy and the staff not friendly at all..We went to look at the place 2 years ago, it may be ok for the Wyns of this place but not good enough for me

Mrs deecyprus4,

You do remain so consistently rapscallion, in your approach to Mr Wynyardman, and one has to question your own self esteem and insecure nature. I will wager that you have never met the gentleman, preferring to attack from a safe distance, like a poorly constructed projectile, emitted from a Gaza residential area.

By all means my dear, you should voice your opinion on your personal findings of the establishment under discussion, but to allude that the standards within are only suitable for certain clientele is somewhat subjective.

Oh, and one might conclude that a short session of elocution lessons might prove rewarding.

Must go my dear, Gerald's toast just popped up, and he does like it warm.

Very well put Mrs Andrews, another needless and scathing attack (again )on Wynyardman and people that choose to stay at the newly refurbished Ship, by Deecyprus 4,

I have contacted Wynyardman offboard for advice and information, and he has aways replied and been most helpfull and i have never met the gentleman.

Well, I just thought I'd add a boring answer which will no doubt kill the thread dead as my comments so often do.

If I had a choice between the Ship and the Pia Bella, the Pia Bella would win everytime. You cannot compare the two in any way. Having been in TRNC for almost 3 years, the Ship would not feature my list of recommendations at all.

Everyone has their own opinion of the place, I have never stayed at the Ship have never fancied it. Mountain Veiw has been mentioned, I stayed there 5or 6yrs ago and would,nt touch it with a barge pole.

But each to their own.

Jubilation's abound, post number 33 from Mrs Cyprus4 (may I just call you Dee) without a snipe, or even mention of those jolly nice Israeli gentlemen.

Well done my dear, now let's keep those standards improving all the time.

Mr the cat, thank you kindly for your valued support. I see in your profile (I do enjoy twitching the curtains a little) you live in Hartlepool,

Incidentally, one will find the Colony most agreeable, though the views are somewhat undesirable, the Rocks, with sea views however is exemplary, and has a very comfortable afternoon cream tea area in the vestibule.
