re msg 1 Muser:

The answer is YES..you can use your SKY player and watch SKY, BBC / ITV etc during your stay.

1/ You'll need an ADSL / Wireless / 3G connection for "fast" internet

2/ Before you go you'll need a UK VPN ( virtual private network) connection setup..

We can supply you one for a month

Send me a pm - my email addy is in my profile

I'm not at all technical so i apologise if this is a silly question - if you have an internet connection in TRNC & your laptop has sky player installed on it, why do you need a VPN ?

Re 10-12

Cystallady / Hippo

You need a VPN as the Beb / SKY / ITV / C4 etc, allow allow connections that appear to be UK based.

Actually, you DON't need a UK TV license to watch iplayer / skyplayer -if it is you only means of viewing.

Heard it on a Radio 2 prog - legal eagle got the admission from TV licensing bod.

You can create a vpn to your own pc back in the UK, but I'm guessing you don't have the UPLINK bandwidth that a dedicated VPN server - directly connected to a major internet backbone has.. :(

Most Cables cos offer up to 500 kps max and ADSL c. 360 kps

Now IF you had SDL - same up and down speed... and no cap on your traffic - YES it would work.

Very few ppl have the luxury of such a connection..

The key to success is the UP speed for the UK and if you want live UK tv a 1.5mps connection at the receiving end.. if not, then downloading - for later playback, rather than streaming is still the way to go.

Hi Kbire

I'm here, and nice to hear from you !

You'd have to subscribe to SKY and have a UK VPN to use it - if you want sport you'd be looking at paying 40.75 GBP / month - going up by 2.5% ( VAT Rise) in December.

Do you have a UK address ?

Hi Kbire

suggest just have SKY installed in Ireland for your parents and you can use the SKY Player using a IRL Virtual private network ?

You'll be giving them a nice present, too ;)

If you look up my post you will find a program that you can download and watch BBC iplayer and any site that is blocked in the NC, I registered with the BBC, all it asked me to do is register put in a user name a password and a UK postcode. I was sent an email with my user id and that was it, I live in Australia and I can now watch BBCiplayer

this is my post if you want to have a look http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/48978.asp

re 19

AussieJock

If the SKY was receiving Irish SKY channels the service you recommend would be as much use as a chocolate fire-guard !

IF the product you are using ( recommending) IS a VPN, I want to know why you need to run an installation to set it up ?!

'There's no such thing as a free lunch'...

re 21

YES, that would work.. but .. only ONE PC can be registered to download - for later playback - the others can only stream.

Would it not be easier to connect sky up to a slingbox?

well why don't you look up the website that's offering the software, if you are not happy with the explanation about the software then don't download it, a lot of people want to watch UK programs and if expat shield is of help to them then whats wrong with using it, if it's not their cup of tea then they can uninstall it, the software has been on the market for quite some time and if it gets you a VNP for the UK thats good. at the moment I find it's good for C4, C5, ITV, BBCiplayer and a few other sites, I switch it off when I don't need it,
