An 8 hour day, that is more than the minimum wage isn't it? You must be good!

Msg 11,

If you contract a company yo do your job, and they pay their workers the minimum wage, they also have to pay provident fund etc, which adds on about 30%.

Treble that to allow for a profit margin, rainy days, other days when there is no work, holiday pay, office staff, accomodation, electricity, depreciation and running costs on office equipment and vehicles, supervisor's wages and VAT - and you'll find that it comes to a lot more than the minimum wage.

Assuming this chap is self employed, and has to pay his own running costs, stand his own losses on rainy days etc, he sounds like a bargain to me!

Best regards,

Keith.

Some folks confuse the minimum wage to mean the maximum (they are prepared to pay) wage.

Vaughan,

They've obviously never run a business then!

One point that everybody seems to have missed, is that many 'locals' and 'mainlanders' have 2 or even 3 jobs, because the minimum wage is barely enough to keep body and soul together, particularly if there are dependants.

Now while they might well have a work permit / and or pay their dues in respect of their 'main' employment, I doubt that they are so scrupulous with 2nd and 3rd jobs - these would provide the 'tax-free icing' on the cake.

I'm not judging here, just pointing it out...

Keith.

Hi Javed

Can you please indicate which areas you can work in and if you have transport?

Cheers

Msg 14: I agree with you about the min wage that there are some that have to take on extra jobs.

What would happen if you were caught employing someone who says he has a work permit?

Do you check before he starts?

Do you write a contract stating that he is responsible for all his/her taxes etc and attach a copy of his work permit to it?

Do you think that if these extra jobs being taken as 'tax-icing on the cake' would have taxes etc paid out of them?

I wouldn't think so.

I'm not trying to be offensive, just wondering how you would get around the situation

Gardener01. I suggest you put your advert on another forum. Some of the people on this one will only ever try to wind you up.

scoobydoo,

I can't actually see ANY way that you can stop locals, or anone else for that matter, working 'outside the system'.

They run the risk of getting caught and punished (probably zero risk of either if they're local, 'cos they're bound to have a friend or relative who can swing things for 'em).

Work permits, from what I read in the paper, are specific to one employer / location, and the responsibility for applying for, and providing one rests with the employer - as does the responsibility for paying their dues. Presumably that's YOU if you employ someone.

If you felt morally obliged to make sure that every worker with whom you came into contact was 100% legal, to stick to the letter of the law, and followed this to its logical conclusion, you would be interogating every barman, waiter, and check-out girl you came across.

As I said before, I wasn't judging - and I'm not suggesting a solution either!

I can't see that it's really anyone else's business except the worker's.

dozza67,

Wasn't trying to wind the guy up, the discussion just drifted off a bit, as discussions tend to do...

I would say to anyone who wants a bit of work doing, "This guy says that he's legal - accept that at face value, and employ him".

regards,

Keith.

Work permits that apply to only one employer are for non Nationals, not for Cypriots. Perhaps Gardener No.1 is a Cypriot, why are some people always so negative on this board. They seem to be real saints that never do anything in their whole lives wrong. Must be hell to live with!!!!

stellasstar1,

Which particular posters / comments on this thread would you consider to be Negative?

If it's me, I won't take offence! - although I didn't intend to be.

Incidentally re your comment:

"Work permits that apply to only one employer are for non Nationals, not for Cypriots."

- my understanding is that Cypriots don't need a work permit at all, this guy says he has a work permit, it would seem to follow that he is not a Cypriot.

Anyway, good luck to him - if he wants to work, he deserves to get on.

Regards,

Keith.

Hi all Keith you are correct it is up to the employer but if he is self employed then maybe he has a buisness permit. Some of the waiters in the Indian restaurants do gardening and a very good job they do They all work so very hard to keep thier families and deserve a break xxx

I want to wish gardener1 good luck, I was never trying to be negative or offensive i was just wondering how to get around the system.

I know that there have been spot checks throughout Girne regarding work permits, my friends have been checked but thankfully were all above board, and I was wondering what would happen to anyone of us if we were caught with someone working without a work permit.

Miss/Mrs/Ms Scoobydoo,

How are you? ........ I've got some words for you now ..... Penelope (that's our grand daughter) does just love your cartoons.

One assumes from the text in your reply message 31 of 33 in discussion, thus written:-

I dont want to get caught with an illegal worker in my garden

That you intention is, if all is in order with Mr Garderner01's credentials that you wish to engage the services of?

Jolly good of you, if only more people supported the local economy in positive ways.

Would you please be as kind as to provide accurate feedback of the services as rendered, that others may benefit from this and likewise may elect to engage the services for themselves too.

One must consider that sometimes, and contrary to the feelings indicated by the vast majority of postings on this forum in general, that the glass is sometimes half full.

Best of luck Mr Gardenenr01.

Mrs. Andrew

Julie Andrews,

I, too, love these cartoons, I only wish I had created them, wouldn't I be wealthy!

At last someone who sees what i am getting trying to get at. If we all employed people illegally we are then not really supporting the local economy and what amazes me that the Brits are the first to complain of this underhand way of working in the UK. I worked for many years in the clothing industry in UK and there were so many factories with illegal workers in and yes you get a good price but to what cost?

I have no intention of either breaking the law of any country that I choose to live in nor encourage the use of illegal workers. I certainly do not want to get caught with an illegal worker in a country of which I am ulitmately a guest in.

I will now not be pursuing the employment of gardener01 as I have spoken to my builder and he is lending me a couple of men to do the heavy work as they are quiet at the moment (which builder isn't?) and yes they are here 'legally'

Why is it that when someone advertises any sort of service in the BB that members then start raising work permits etc etc have they nothing better to do. Did the same people always question tradesmen in the UK ? did they never pay cash in hand? did they ask if all employees were registered? Did no Eastern Europeans ever do work for them without question ? Come on get a life what the hell is it to do with you? and don't tell me it's in case that the work isn't done properly then you have no comeback, most warranties with legit companies over here don't even bother to honour that. let this enterprising guy get on with it
