Dear Gang

You've all been so kind and helpful in the past and wonder whether I can again impose to ask for your help.

We are shipping a container over and I was wondering whether you can advice me what to bring that is maybe difficult or expensive in NC i.e.

curtain hooks,

garden tools,

swish curtain rails,

anything in the haberdashery department i.e. sewing machine needles, cotton etc.

bycicle tubes and parts,

lamp bulbs.

Also, in the food department i.e. porridge, tea bag etc.

Anything else you can think of will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Milou,

We found it difficult to get an english garden spade and an english garden hoe,

they are a different shape in Cyprus and I found them impossible to use. I ended up taking them from England. Curtain hooks and tracks easily available in curtain shops. Good teabags also take a supply of dishwasher tablets as they are very expensive. If I think of anything else I will email you.

Any UK branded food is more expensive here so any that you bring will be cheaper to start off with.

Bring out electric blankets as these are more expensive here. Light fittings are cheaper in uk. Basically what we did was thought of all the things we didn't think we'd need and brought over anyway. Decent paint for a start, although it is getting better now the border is open and we can get it from south.

Garden tools. Pack it all, you can always sell what you don't need at the Auction rooms. You'd be amazed what people will buy!

Hi Milou

I would say most electrical stuff like iron, kettle,tv, dvd's,video, pc's are more expensive in NC. Also nescafe and cleaning solutions, like ariel, shampoos and stuff. Good luck to you.

Gang - thanks again.

Orangekazzie - stupid question but if we bring wall paint, won't this be affected by the heat in the container?

Wall and ceiling paints are normally emulsions (water based) so no flash point - therefore OK in container.

Wood paints normally contain white spirit and other solvents, flash point about 35 Celsius, so avoid containers in summer months. Such a paint is harzardous and could invalidate any insurance policy.

The only paint I would bring is hammerite for metal work, the metal work takes a good hammering from the sea air. Most other paints are ready available.

pretty sure i have seen daddies sauce in TRNC (know they definitely sell marmite!). The little supermarket next to the electric office just up from the Ataturk statue at the old harbour had it.

Word of warning. If you do bring over a generator make sure you "age" it first because otherwise you'll get charged import duty on it.

Karen - do you what the rate of duty is on new goods?

For example, if it is obvious that a lounge suite or dining table is new and unused is there a set % rate?

Thanks in advance, Paul

As long as its for personal use they normally dont levy a charge, if though you have multiple items obviously for re-sale they'll hit you for 40% based on their valuation.
