What a strange hotel it is, all greek themed and in the north, does anyone have any facts about this huge place?

We stayed there for acouple of years ago when it first opened. It's a huge place - massive swimming pool. Service and food was very good. We were going to go back last year for the week-end however they put the prices up b5 200% so we didn't bother. Personally I prefer the Mercure. We've never stayed there but you can pay £30 a head for a day pass which includes all drinks and a lunch fit for a king. Excellent value

I don't know Dee. The Manager there said they were going to build 10 themed Hotels along that coastline. Perhaps that's what the idea is, just like Vegas.

the artemis is said to be a copy of the temple to artemis at efes in turkey yes, this would have been a pagan structure, but is now part of turkey's heritage too since the greek world in turkey was finally extinguished in the early 1920's: after a bungled invasion of the smyrna region by modern greece, yet another example of the poor old sods overreaching themselves and finding out all too late, that when turkey bites back, it can be unpleasant whoever you think the land or hotel really "belongs" to, or "belonged" to this and future plans for the bafra coast indicates that the investors and banks believe they are all there for good personally I don't like this type of megadevelopment, be it anywhere in cyprus, the horrors of southern spain or dubai etc etc nonetheless there is a world market for resort complexes of this variety it sounds like several of us are in juliet's bad books, either for being unladylike or insufficient attention to spelling

Kaya Artemis built with Turkish money as all the other 9 themed hotels will be. I went there on opening night and have been a few times subsequently. Not tatty at all ??? Of course not to everyones tasted but where is?? (The place with lions etc. on outskirts of Magusa is a discoteque. I think you have to be quite young and up in the early hours of the morning to see it operate ) This area of Bafra has always been intended to be the 'Las Vegas' of the Med. Not everyones taste but then no one forces you to go there. Lot of potential for tourism; which the North so urgently needs. One benefit to the local area has been jobs of course and there is a massive de-salination plant which also put water into the local system.

I popped along to this turkish owned hotel just the other day to enquire about rates, had a good nosy round & was not at all inpressed, tatty, dirty & WAY over the top, who wants to sit on a throne while having a cup of coffee! the pool area also shabby, broken tiles & awful chipped brown paintwork every where, no wonder i only saw 3 guests in the 2 hours i was there & they were not tourists. on another forum there is a lady who owns some of the land where these ugly places are being built, will be interesting to see where she progresses with her claim to wards the people who have built on her land,

kaya artemis is mainland turkish investors , along that coast there have been 14 apllications on 14 100 donum plots , 9 have been granted and approved , they include , noahs ark hotel , babylon hotel , egyption pyramids hotel etc etc , ive seen most of the architectural drawings ,they will all have some kind of theme , its like a las vegas style or like the hotels on antalya coastline concept, ive personally seen the tourisms depertments plans there , very interesting and grand indeed , thallasa bay development is also along that strip and so far the only development on the beachfront that is selling properties and not just a resort. its turkish title too !

"it`s turkish title too" maybe but only recognised in turkey where as the real land owners are internationally recognised. as i said will be very interesting to see the progress of the real land owners claim.

no cypwine , its ORIGINAL turkish title , i know the israeli who bought it and the guy who he bought it from , and the original owner has had it in his familly from his great grandfathers father who was an ottoman grand mufti in ottoman cyprus , or do u consider 400 odd years of ottoman rule , foreign occupation too , u probably still believe Istanbul ( defunct constantinople) is rightfuly greek too

Last summer, this hotel was very busy. The local beach next to it is lovely and looked after, but if you want boat trips, jet skis etc, the hotel beach has it all for you to use. You dont need to go into the hotel for the beach, just go to the local beach and take 20 steps across the sand to the hotel beach. I dont like the look of it, but thats my taste. There is also a huge golf course going on in that area. Plans approved last summer. Again foreign money.

cypwine - I think your message No. 30 is slightly misleading, if the posting on another forum is the same one I think it is. I believe the person said that her father was given some land in the area by his family and that it may or may not be in the area where the Artemis has been built. If I remember correctly, they were going to have a look and see. Of course, other posters on that particular forum were already talking about "another one for the bulldozer" as they are inclined to do. J

I was there just over a week ago, hoping to show my pal round the place (have been there several times before). They now have the barriers down and charge you 75ytl each to go in - they said all that was included for that was use of the pool. But to simbas' comment about the place looking as if no one uses it, last year when I visited it was packed out round the pool areas, the beach and along the pier - in contrast to Limassol and surrounding areas at that time of year (early Sep) - they were deserted. Most of the people I saw were obviously Muslim - they were sat on the beach in high temperatures covered from head to foot.

Friends of ours visited this August, they paid the fee but it did include lunch. Either that or they eat anyway and did not pay ;-) There was alot of Russians there along with wealthy Turks who as you say were covered from head to foot. Even when they went in the pool. Local beach has been done up too. Some like it others think its lost its local charm. I will let you know in a few weeks when we get back.

We booked the Artemis last year not realising that it was a Bayram and luckily enough we phoned to ask for a room upgrade before travelling there. We were told that there was no reservation in our name. We checked with the agent that we booked through and they said that they had confirmation from the hotel. They then contacted the Artemis and were told that the hotel was fully booked with Turkish guests (obviously they were going to use the casino) and that they were cancelling all the 'other' overbooked??? reservations. They didn't think to advise people about this though and we have never gone back.

Does it really matter who owns it, what it looks like or what land it was built on? It's a themed hotel, it may look Greek, i'm sure the Pyramid they're planning will look Egyptian, just like the Venetian in Las Vegas looks Italian - youdon't hear them complaining! Why can't we just accept the fact that this is just another hotel someone has built, with someone elses money (yes probably Isreali cash) - on cheap land that no one bothered to build on before? I do however agree with Msg 15 - it does look very tacky, it's nothing more than very cheap immitation of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas! with over-priced room rates. I still can't understand why anyone would want to pay to see a hotel - I thought the staying guests did that, or don't they have any? I did have a quick walk around of the hotel last year (i didn't pay as I told the guy at the gate was on the phone) and it was just full of gold bling decorated women from Turkey. There are better hotels on the Island!

Well said. You can see the beach front from the public beach next door. Infact only a grain of sand seperates the two. Earlier this year you could just walk along the beach from the public one and see all you need to see for free.

juliet message 6: if I was you I wouldn't ask people in north cyprus if they really want a mini-turkey: some of the locals might even answer "yes" on the other hand if the tc's really trust your lot more than the much-criticized turks they will be asking them to leave won't they? ...perhaps that's why you claimed it was "75% in the bag" as recently as this spring oh, many of the expats will be wobbling away merrily looking to see what's best for them but who cares about a few thousand foreigners? it is not as if turkey's permanent guarantee was devised for their benefit: they are just riding along on the crest of a wave, like the boy scouts really, and er...like most people on this planet

Just been watching Ada TV and from a phone in from someone in London, it seems like that this hotel has recently had an outbreak of salmonella. Of course the hotel managers have denied these reports and even accused the tourists who paid 4,100 YTL for a weeks stay, that they bought the bacteria in to Cyprus from the UK 4 days ago and the caller in to the show also complained that the hotel did not even call out a doctor... Doesn't sound like a 5 star hotel to me! So if you do plan to visit this place, beat you eat before you go and wash your hands when you leave.
