Hi all,

Would love to get peoples opinions on the British Residents Society, Is it worth joining?

What are the benefits?

Is anyone a member?

Have had a look on their site, am not sure what you get for the money.

I joined but never heard any more from them even though they had my email address. I emailed them twice via their website re renewing membership but didn't get a reply. They have unfortunately had 2 tragic deaths of committee members including their Chairman which I surmise has hindered the society activites.

There are some benefits but the main one is a wealth of experience in the ways of the island / no axe to grind just open help and advice and some excelent contacts - thanks for reminding me to pay my dues

We've been members for 6 years now and find them very helpful. You have to remember that they are purely volutary. They do not get paid for the work they put in. If anyone has website experience, perhaps they could offer to help voluntaryily of course. LOL

Joined when we first arrived in 2002 but let our membership lapse in 2008. They do a pretty good job especially organising the blood donor day twice a year and are on hand Saturday morning giving advice to members, but it just seems a tired and needs a bit of fresh impetus.

The money we save in membership fees we NOW donate to KAR.

BRS AGM is on 28th March 2009, 11:00 at Pia Bella Hotel Girne. Agenda available from 14th March via Pegasus and the Girne Hut. If you want to see a change and to make a difference in your society then be pro-active and make the effort to attend the AGM and vote.

I come from Liverpool , i phoned the British residents society and i spoke to a very well spoken lady who couldn't wait to get of the phone . It made me laugh because i had an image of her with her gin and tonic smoking her minted cigarette as she tells her awfully posh friends how the place is going to the dogs because the bloody scouses are coming

roey65 Msg 17

I can understand where you are coming from Scousers talk different to the rest of the Northerners, as do the Scots and have you every tried a Cockney or someone from Somerset?

I ve got to laugh at your picture but it's Cyprus let her have a raki.

A thought or two, maybe she sounded posh but at least she was there for you.

How many others live in North Cyprus who could help (maybe some even from Liverpool) but cant get up from their backsides around a bar somewhere or maybe they are just all complaining; not doing like the "posh" person who you are complaing about

roey65 - rightly or wrongly, I found your posting very funny, as that's just how I imagine these ladies to look. I'd have had no chance then, with my cockney/estuary English accent!!

RE msg 9, NastyNige >>> Erolz says '' They wouldnt have us as Karin is a NZ national ! ''They let the dutchman join !! <<<

===> Yes, because he asked the Committee to reconsider the rules. Which they did. EU-citizens, not being British, can now join as associated members (no vote, not allowed to hold any office). And we don't have to pay 10 GBP per year but only 9 GBP And we are still not welcome on the British cemetery (to be buried I mean)... Well, I can live with the latter... Brits, please join and enforce the voice of us, expats. Do it before its too late.

Thanks for all the opinions...

I asked the society if anyone wanted to do an interview with my website, to publicise what they do....

After no reply for a month, I asked again and was told the committee have decided against it...

I don't want to offend anyone, but it seems strange behaviour.

I was really disappointed.

I was hoping their experience in North Cyprus could be shared, i don't understand their reluctance to publicise their group, attract new people.

Surely if societies like this are going to survive they have to appeal to the next generation...

They have someone in charge of publicity, i would love to know why they said no.....

Ah the Mad Crusader pokes his head up-we all know he dislikes the British he has made this very plain in a number of instances-but refuses to answer of course.

I do think he should be allowed to be laid to rest in the British cemetary after all a lot of British troops never left Arnhem.

In my opinion the BRS is worth joining as it is only £10 per annum. We more that recover our £10 by the discounts we get with our insurance for both house and car at Iktisatbank.

It is also up to us as individuals to pass on any new conacts or systems (and we all know that the TRNC like to change things as they go along) that we learn of ie to do with residency, ptp etc so that information is readily available to newcomers.

They are all voluntary workers and I hear it does take up 2 or 3 days of their time some weeks. They do try to negotiate with the government and local business on behalf of the British expats for better prices, discounts, changes in systems in the way that the expats are dealt with.

Wasn't there something in the Cyprus Today about some new people putting their names forward as they also thought that the current committee needed a fresh input of ideas and faces?

For the cost of £10 and they hours they often put in on our behalf, I think they are wort

===> You have shown your obsession with "British troops and Arnhem" on several boards throughout the years. I suggest you change the tune (Waterloo or Trafalgar or whatever?) or even better: seek medical help. As an ex-corporal second class (after 40 years of service) you probably get psychological help for free?

PS. Every Brit and all qualifying EU-expats should join the BRS.

===> Right. As far as I know only the USA and UK participate in this illegal war in Iraq (on a probably known, false pretext) and illegal occupation.

The Dutch army participates in the UN sanctioned force in Afghanistan, where (too many) Dutch soldiers were killed in action.

Could I confirm that six members have been nominated to join the committee which will mean that there will be a vote. There have also been a number of resolutions proposed to help move the society forward.

Like many people we believe the society has done a great job in the past, but may now benefit from some new blood, and that the members as a whole may benefit from having the opportunity to be more involved in the society's workings.

Please try and attend and vote for a NEW DIRECTION.

Sorry about the capitals but it seems one rule for one and one for another, and yes I am shouting

Jut to get back on topic and to be clear about my previopus posts as some seem to have taken them as a critism of the BRS, which they were not.

About 6 years ago myself and my partner Karin went along to a BRS meeting. I think it was an AGM but not 100% sure. We enquired there about joining but were told that Karin as a NZ national could not join. We did not ask the comittee to 're consider its rules' we just accepted the existing ones and decided not to join. Everyone there was nice and pleasant and it seemed like they were doing good work. We thought Karin might be allowed to join as she had lived the previous 15 years in the UK under a 'grandparent visa entry' thinggy, that gave her pretty much all the rights of a UK citizen in the UK. We asked , were told that she could not join. End of my story.

I still have to wonder just why important meetings such as an AGM seem to be held when so many may not be able to attend viz. those that don't permanently reside but visit for extended periods. Would say June or September not be better? Just a thought. Back to lurk mode.

Who are the BRS? That's the question.

They have certainly not taken advantage of technology, (nor indeed if I am lead to believe by one of our members,) the offer of technology, so perhaps new blood is needed if they are to go forward and assist their current members and swell their membership in the future.

As for the obnoxious Hoppi.....

Good for the BB Police. There is nothing whatsoever lighthearted in your attitude whether you profess jibes or banter with DC. It is pure vile venom that spues from your mouth like an erupting volcano.

I am totally fed up with reading your venom, again and agan directed at one person.

Are you a cyber bully?

Why did you join this BB?

Can you not get your kicks over on HU?

Or......

is it not allowed?

"What do the other members think?"

Not a lot of you, and the way you have conducted yourself so far!

TIP: Black coffee and lots of it.

BTW I love the policeman's helmet!

Please fee free to share your particular vice with me as I, for one, admire your brave posts, when clearly you are beyond the realms of posting, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

So can I have what you are on and maybe, just maybe, I might chill a little?

Yesterday, I was glancing through the latest edition of the North Cyprus Property magazine and I actually found a 2 page article advertising the benefits of using the BRS. I must admit it is the first and only but it was good and informative. There really should be more of this type of promotion for the society.

Tiggy, you can pick up an application from their hut which is open on Saturdays 10 to 12 or on Fridays at Pegasus Bar in Karaoglanoglu in the mornings 10 to 1'ish

I went to the Mayors do at the Malpas at Christmas, the majority of people there were British, are these the British Residents Society members or is it a get together of all British owners on North Cyprus. What amazed me was the singing to the Mayor of "He's a jolly good fellow" does he get things done in Girne? does he take any notice of the British owners?

Can you wonder if the BRS is not keen on having some of you as members ?

By the way from what I hear some of the Brits at the Mayor's party at the Malpas behaved appalingly. If foreigners behaved like this in the uk you would be the first to complain. Leave DC alone. He is one of the few on the board who speak sense.
