Tectonic plat shifting hasn’t been governed by any rules yet. Although taking a car south is no problem. Just bring it back before the doors get kicked in! Sir Roger Skogs (who you can tell his tellies bust)

Paul, The only times that you might have problems is if you want to take a rental car to the South. - Rental companies generally do not allow it, because of the high cost of recovery across the Green Line in case of breakdown, and the problems of recovering damage costs from third parties in the event of accident etc. There are no problems taking a private car across, - provided that you have ALL the car documents, a valid UK driving licence, and the tax and insurance booths are open. They will issue you (Free!) with a tax certificate valid for the South, as long as you have a valid tax disc for the North. You need this before you can buy insurance. Any queries, just give me a ring. Regards, Keith. 0533 830 1835

Morning Paul, You can take a hire car North to South with consent from the hire company, (a signed note) also ask the hire company about insurance, as I believe you are only insured third party once leaving the north. Vicki

the Turkish Cypriot Association of car hire companies had a meeting last year and decided as a group not to allow their cars through the border. This was because of the problems with insurance and cooperation (or lack of) from the Greek authorities in the event of accidents or other incidents. The members of the association then had to register all of their car number plates with the police stating that those cars were not allowed to go through the border. You may be lucky and find a company or maybe individual willing break that decision to do it but I have not heard of any.

Thanks for the info.Looks like the best opion would be to hire one from the south and drive over to the north to the apartment. Then drive to Pafos, why is it so bloody complicated, Paul.

vicki, msg 9 Yes the car hire company may let you take a car south but they will not insure you. The only cover you would have is what you buy at Metehan. So if you are involved in an accident you will have to pay full cost of repatriation of vehicle, all repairs and in worst case all your own medical bills. This is because your UK insurance company would say it was negligent of you for driving a hire car without insurance. So to Paul, on the surface it is fairly simple to take a hire car south but if anything goes wrong....................... David

Well it wasn't "so bloody complicated" before the border opened N-S in 2004. Would you prefer it was closed again?
