IF UBP gain pwer at the next election and IF they revers the revision made by CTP to the education texts in the TRNC this will be a very sad day indeed.

The revisions made by CTP were need and progressive. It is not often in Cyprus that one side is markedly 'better' than the other but on this issue the TRNC has taken a lead and was widely praised for this.

In the South the new post TP government there has been and continues to try and achieve the same, though it is facing fierce opposition and a degree of 'dirty tricks' campaigns by those that oppose the change.

Both sides need to revise how we teach history to Cypriot children. The north has made real progress and that this is under threat now is depressing to be honest. The South continues to try and implement similar changes. I hope it sucseeds.

History is history. The greeks murdered members of my family. What are you saying change it so it does not sound so bad. I would like my children to know the history so I tell them what happened. Why would you want to change that.

i do agree that the history of cyprus should be told how it was, no changes.

but expect the gc's to do the same.

maybe this would go some way to common ground between both sides.

tell the truth without the propaganda.

until both sides can do this i don't see how cyprus can move on.

Ataturk there are different ways that history can be tought. It can be taught offering only one side of the story and a single perspective or it can be taught offering all sides and prespectives.

Till very recently in Cyprus the teaching of history has not been used as a means to equip our children with the skills and processes necessary to make their own evaluations and minds up in a balanced and critical way. It has been used as a means of indoctrinating them with a single perspective on the recent history of Cyprus. In the TRNC under CTP huge progress was made on rectifying this problem, which is a necessary step if any real progress to rappraochment are to be made. The RoC under its current leadership is attempting to do the same , in the face of determined opposition internaly.

The teaching of history has been and is, like so many things in Cyprus, a political issue. I welcome the changes made by CTP and efforts in the ROC to do likewsie. I fear thier reversal.

erolz. i think you will see that NO ROC government is going to bend over back backwards to help the TRNC or change anything in our favour. President Talat was going to sort out the Cyprus problem in 3 months , i am still waiting.

Erolz If you notice that more and more schools are no longer teaching about Kemal Ataturk. They are moving away from this to be more european. This is the same in some schools in Turkey. Unfortunately all this does is make people lose their identity and have no direction in their lives.

CTP ideas of teaching history was to tone it down so it does not sound as bad and frightning. I do not agree with this either but then on the other hand UBP policy was one to use it as porpaganda. An example of this was when CTP won the elections on that day on BRT they were showing scenes from the war in 1974, of the turkish army landing. This is propaganda to frighten people that if you dont vote for us this is what will happen.

Although I would sway to the side of UBP I did have expectations that this government was going to do something but alas we have been left very disappointed. Taxes have gone up but services remain worse than ever and the people are angry. A change is on its way.
