You can do whatever you like in life as long as you dont get caught. Good advice that TCs should take their UK passport with them.

The police will check that with what passport you used to get into the country. The fine has just been increased so casinos are taking a little more seriously, but forsure they will all still have their warning bell or alarm to warn trnc players if they are raided by the police. Thet all have back doors to escape out off.

maybe there was going to be a police raid last night and someone at the casino might have heard about it . So they would tell their regular trnc customers not to come in on that night. Not that i am speaking from previous experience...... of course !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely our stamp in our passport states that we are "temporary" residents, wonder if that qualifies us to go. Do they mean full residents or temporary residents (yearly), if so I think they will find a difference in their takings.

I've always thought that it was intended to stop the locals squandering what little money they have on gambling.

The Casinos are intended to help the economy, and hence the locals by paying tax revenue - not to take money off them.

I understood that the 'Ban' always did apply to Betting shops as well, but was never enforced with any rigour.

Anyone care to 'put me right'?

keith.

TC born in cyprus, living abroad , even having the british citizenship cannot enter ! it is what has been told to my brother in law - it is so stupid - people should be ab le to go where ever they want to espacially when they come for holidays - an otherf question : how can the police know with your british passeport that you are a trnc resident ? casinos are going to check out lots of people working for them - some will have to go back to their countries - some others are TC , unemployment will be high - what about all the taxes, casinos are paying !non-sense !

Two of my friends were refused entry to both Jasmine And Mercure Casinos on Friday evening. She is British and her husband is a Cypriot.

They were told only tourists and mainland Turks are allowed to gamble now. They also said when the Government changes in April, the rules may change as well.

Saying that, another couple I know entered the Mercure on Saturday night with no problems (both British). But the couple in front of them were stopped, and being questioned at the desk.

What is going on ???

Keith

Ref your message 16, I agree with your posting. Not sure what is going on but expat friends of ours (temporary residence) are still using the casinos and are not being asked for their passports.

We sometimes go to Jasmine and as yet have never been asked for our passports. I dont understand what is going on. Only last week his government announced that there is now going to be a charge to enter casinos. Also from now on 70% of the work force must be cypriot. How can they have such double standards. Cant gamble in them but you can work in them. Not that a cypriot woud work in them. The govenment clain the entrance charge will go towards tourism. I agree to the charge as many expats use the casinos just for a free meal. I have also heard that many casinos are laying off staff. Its no wonde if people are being refused entry.

The minimum age to enter is 25.

A bit odd as you can vote and be sent to war from 18...

I would be interested in AJ's take on msgs 17,18, and 20 onwards.

If things are running true to form, then the entire situation as reported by these posters will be due to either a 'badly worded' or 'poorly understood' instruction from on high.

I cannot imagine the TRNC government having such concern for us ex-pats that it deliberately bans us from Casinos to protect us from ourselves!

Keith.

the only thing i can assure you for 100% is : TC born in cyprus , having an other nationality and living in that country could get in - because he is born in cyprus - and a TC friend living in cyprus but british nationality has been refused as well !

I can confirm that new laws are being introduced, forbidding T.C. residents entering casinos.

Previously, (mentioned by Craig), authorities more or less turned a blind eye to T.C's gambling. If any persons were caught by the police playing in the casinos, they were only given a verbal warning and most of the players were back in the establishments within half hour of receiving their cautions!

Its true, most casino's know when they are going to be paid a visit and relay the information to their clients.

However, the new laws state that all casinos should now record all customer visits, giving details of age and place of residence.

Under these laws, the responsibility of 'entry' is given to the casinos and must keep records of all players who enter the casino.

If it is found that data has not been recorded and T.C.s are found gambling on their casino, then they can fine, close down the property.
