How good? On the whole, excellent! Yes, there are a couple of places that favor the tourist tastebuds, but there is plenty of choice around the harbour and in the streets behind. My general rule is to lurk outside long enough to examine a menu (ask for one if you have to) and see what the mood is inside. If you hear hushed English tones and not much else, move on. If you hear happy Cypriot voices AND chatting English, you're usually onto a winner. Nothing gets people chatting happily more than good food served with a smile - and a glass of wine or two! Come and stay for a week or two and try for yourself - you won't be disappointed.

You have to have at least one meal at a restaurant around the Old Harbour but obviously it's aimed at tourists and can be expenive. The small cobbled streets leading away from harbour front have much more interesting and economical potential.

Sheba- welcome! You will no doubt be inundated with advice on which mental institution to book yourself into if you are thinking of buying here at the moment!

Having said that and back to your question, we find the quality of the restaurants and the food they serve varies tremendously. Some would advise against eating on the harbour for cost and hygiene reasons but the setting is stunning. We have never had any problems on the Harbour but I daresay health and safety would have a field day in some of the kitchens!

Welcome Sheba! The Old Harbour is picturesque but the restaurants are not great value for money with the food being targetted towards tourists... Wander off the beaten track along the small roads away from the harbour itself and you will find places which serve good food at reasonable prices. Meze is a must, you can eat a little of a wide range of foods and take your time to have a drink and a chat in between.

Wasn't it the Fisherman in Girne where 4 UK tourists were hospitalised recently for serious food poisoning?

You need to re-evaluate the latest information on that one.

Re mes 10

The prob was not the FISHERMANS INN but the fish/wholesalers according to the experts. We have eaten many times at the Fishermans Inn and would recomend it to anyone.

paddy1966 - but surely a restauranteur would know one fish from another? Even I, not being a fish lover, knows that puffa fish can be lethal, if eaten?

Sheba, for a treat you can't go wrong with Efendi's in the Turkish quarter. You won't be disappointed.
