Greetings all.

After a six/seven year gap we are re-visiting NC this year in September. We have a villa in Catalkoy for 2 weeks and whilst it is a chill out vacation we still like to get out and explore! So any suggestions would be welcome along with great places to eat (a very important part of our holiday!) We remember Errols at Ozankoy and shall be heading there but please share your favourites, particularly for Catalkoy (so we can walk there) and of course the Harbour area.

Many thanks

Tom

Hello! I live in Catalkoy and in the general area can recommend Patina just up off the main road opposite the new Lemar at Ozankoy. Also if you want a nice takeaway curry, try Happy Valley.

If you fancy some tapas-style dishes, then Sabor just off the bottom end of Girne High Street is good, and for the best Italian food, take a drive up to Guido's in Alsancak.

In the Harbour DO NOT go to the Brothers restaurant, no matter how much they try to persuade you, but Harbour Delight is very nice - simple, but nice.

Have a great time!

Avoid eating and drinking in the Harbour - great views but in my experience high prices with fairly average tucker.

Passport and Sabor both good and prices surprisingly reasonable.

Guido's has good reputation as does the Verrandah.

Curry - Happy Valley in Cattlekoy best (imho).

Hi Tom

All of these are really good (well we like them anyway) and have great situations for eating outside in the summer:

Rafters and Erolls in Ozankoy

Kybel, BellaMoon and Abbey Bell Tower in Bellapais

Set Fish in the Harbour or Niazis opposite the Dome

Something Different - Valley View Taverna just passed Acapulco on the road to Esenteppe - great Meze and BBQ fish !!

Also try Kervansay Pizza Garden for lunch and Stone Grill in Alsancak

I have heard Patina is great but havent tried it yet

Have fun !

Tom,

As you haven't been here for 6 or 7 years please note that Erols has moved but is still in Ozankoy, I would hate for you to turn up and then think they have closed. There are small signs around the village guiding you to their new premises. Their phone number in 815 9136.

Another super restaurant in Ozankoy is the Old Mill, well worth a visit.

if you want to avoid being sick for the rest of your holiday please do not eat anything in the harbour. they will poison you!! trust me been there than that. if you "need" a curry drive to jashan (it's the less orrific one). i been in couple of indian restaurants kitchens in Catalcoy and karakum way and trust when i say i will never have a curry in this country. i seen some dirty places in my time but here take some beating!! in one of them i was sick as soon as i got out!! if you like chinese try dragon by the rocks hotel. its not cheap but good. if you like italian then kitty is spot on guido's is the best on the island.

Hi mister21 , welcome to the forum , I think your comment on the harbour is a bit strong . While i grant you it is over priced , but i choose to eat there on occasions as it is so pretty and our visitors love it there when we take them there . As for the and the food it is of a mediocre standard , i can quite honestly say i have never been ill from eating there .

Regards , Simbas

I agree Simbas

I have eaten in the harbour on many occasions and have never had a problem with the quality of food. All I can say is that mister21 must have a very sensitive stomach. Cherinis is my favourite restaurant in the old harbour.

I don't think all the restaurants on the Harbour are expensive. The one that goes down the jetty (Harbour Club?) is very reasonable for such a fantastic setting. Meze and fish for about 25TL hardly breaks the bank for most holidaymakers. Would also agree that Cherinis is good. Had great apple pie and capuccino there a few days ago.

Aah Jo,

apple pie and capuccino at Cherinis, a treat I'd forgotten about, something else to look forward to when we move over there.

Quite a few harbour restaurants also do set prices, I think over the years the price difference is less than it used to be between harbour and elsewhere. I have never been ill after any restaurant visit in TRNC, and have certainly tried a lot over the years.

The thing to remember is Cherinis have no harbour frontage (cheaper prices) but they have probably the best roof terrace there is in the old harbour. Their fish of the day is superb. The entrance is around the back of the harbour.

My other favourite is To Limani, only for snacks and drinks but the prices are good and the family that own it are lovely people.

So despite what others say it is possible to enjoy a day at the old harbour without being fleeced.

Hipps

'AJ obviously has lots of dosh'

Unfortunately you are typical of the 'tried one, treat them all the same' attitude of Brit Expats.

Never mind you will get there in the end.

I will never forget an evening we spent at Cherinis many years ago, beautiful warm evening, fabulous views from roof top terrace, Andre Bocelli disc playing in the background, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. It was one of those nights we will never forget and what finally convinced us that we wanted to retire there.

hattikins

A few years ago my wife and I spent 4 hours after having a meal, discussing with the owner a menu that he thought would appeal to the British holiday makers. We were given free drinks while we all discussed the restaurants winter menu. Happy times.
