Sorry my key board packed up!! My customers obviously wish to keep their car and not have to change it for a Turkish plated vehicle. Is this possible?

The customs are now taking south cars off people who have a house, owned or rented in the north. They make you take the car back to the south after a fine .

There is no law against this its just what they are doing at the moment.

The police confirmed to Cyprus Today there is no law in an article 2 weeks ago.

You have no trouble at all insuring south cars in the north. You can get 3rd party at the border and then shop around to get fully comp in the north. The insurance firms will not tell you about customs as they will get no business.

The police probably do not know about said laws because it is nothing to do with them, it is customs regulations.

At last they are dealing with all the illegally used cars in this country.

So back to topic, chances are that if you try to do as suggested in msg 1 you will loose the car.

Don't bother, they are impounding Greek cars. Happened to me on Friday. The customs man told me they are combing the streets looking for them. I posted something on the 'customs' thread earlier today.

Hi Billy

This is interesting reading - am I now right to think that if I move from South toNorth I will need to sell my current car before I come and buy a new Car in the North? Sounds a bit crazy to me ... If I come for a visit is it ok to bring my car or better to take a hire car from Lefkosia?

Appreciate advice ...

Surely, if you're moving a car from the south to the north, you're importing it. Then all the customs hoo ha starts. Especially if customs think you're using a south registered car simply to avoid customs duties.

If they're comming to live in the North, then they will have to pay import taxes to import the car into the TRNC from the Greek administrated area.

As far as i know, Turkish companies donot insure GC vehicles. Once they get their Turkish plates (given when all import taxes are paid), they can get their cheap insurance via a Turkish insurer.

However, there's nothing stopping your clients from getting their vehicle insured by a GC insurer, that covers the vehicles use in the North. However, this can only be done for 12 months.

After 12 months, the vehicle will need to be registered in the TRNC and taxes paid.

So, to conclude, best option is to pay the import taxes, get the vehicle registered in the TRNC and be able to get cheap insurance from a Turkish insurer.

Hi Canyavuz

Thanks for the information - it help clarify things. When I moved from UK to North I decided not to import a uk car becacuse of the huge import duties. Can you direct me to a site where I can find info on importing a car into TRNC - anyone?? Am happy to follow the right course and pay the import tax as long as its not exhorbitant for the age of the car.

Thanks ...

Spiritdancer,

The vehicle has to be under 5 years of age. Or, if it's a classic, a classic is classed as 25 years or over.

Import taxes are around 40% of the vehicles local value, plus a lump sum ontop of this depending on the engine size of the vehicle. (A typical example of the lump sum is $1200 US dollars to be paid on vehicles with engine sizes smaller than 1600CC).

This website should help you get around the figures.

Buying a car locally could be the most financially wise option.

Also be a bit careful because if you are also importing furniture the rules about being able to have the car for 12 months change and I think you only have a month to sort out the duty on the car.
