Can somebody please explain how I go about entering TRNC in my UK road legal car for 3 weeks without having the car impounded.

I am only visiting for 3 weeks and my understanding was this was alright, but judging recent comments I have doubts. Forget myths and legends can any body tell me exactly what I can and cannot do......

Thanks in advance

I can only go on our own experience. We drove over last October and when we arrived at Girne we where given an import document valid for 1 month and told to go to Lefkosa when our temporary import document expired,if you are only staying for 3 weeks and then driving back you should not have any problems. But please be aware the rules change all the time.

Hope this helps

We did it last year, no problems but Customs etc a pain in the arse. Make sure you get get insurance cover for North Cyprus otherwise it will cost you when you arrive. We were given 90 days cover but apart from delays and ropey ferry from Turkey no real problems and no your car will not be impounded if your documents are ok.

Currently Customs are impounding cars but only where they are deliberatly flounting the laws

Enjoy your stay

Lee - the rules are very clear.

If you enter at Kyrenia or Famagusta you must declare your car to Customs.

They will give you the necessary papers to drive in TRNC for one year.

Baxi7 - it is best not to bring in a UK car (from Southampton via Limmasol) from the south.

If you do then you will not be able to "import" it.

Customs will make you take it to Turkey for the day and then bring it back as a new import.

Hope this helps.

paul , i do not reside in the north , i only visit friends . this year i had my uk reg car impounded by customs and had to pay a fine 0f 450 tlr to get it back , customs also told me to take the car to turkey and not to bring it back .i am gratefull that i managed to get the car back south , not wanting to get in more trouble i am trying to find out how long a car can stay after crossing from the south . ( g/c reg car ) .after asking 6 different customs staff & getting 6 different answers , there is no point me buying a t/c car to sit around for a couple of weeks use .

I'm interested in your replies. I'm hoping to come via ferry from Turkey but the car is registered in Lebanon and is a right hand drive. Are there any issues with right hand drives? If I have insurance for Turkey (which we'll get as we cross from Syria into Turkey) will that cover us in TRNC?

LoopyLoo,

No problem at all with right hand drive cars - we drive on the left - the 'proper side'.

And we have 'proper' UK electricity (13amp plugs) as well! - admittedly the voltage does go up and down a bit, and sometimes a helluva lot more than just a bit!

I think that you will probably need to buy a month's TRNC insurance at the port, but just ask when you arrive (if no one else on here knows for definite) - shouldn't be a problem, no matter what time you arrive.

You can drive on a UK licence for 3 months, and your (foreign) road tax is valid until it expires.

Keith.

Re msg 9:

Dear Keith

Thanks for your reply. Driving from Lebanon went from seeming easy to difficult but is slowly slipping into 'do-able'. We already know the ins and outs of going into Syria from Lebanon and kind of how to get into Turkey. Thanks for filling in the gaps.
