Had a vaild point brought to my attension by a fellow board member, how do other members feel with regard to treatment of non TC's are we discriminated against or would you say the system is racist ?

We have examples with regard to elec connection ( Brits pay more than locals), what is the general consensus.

I would say that we as brits are most definatly discriminated againsts in the TRNC, this is demonstrated at all levels one price for locals another for us, silly rules apply to us but not the locals, I could go on but you get the picture.

Discrimination is worldwide, the foreigner or mug punter always gets shafted. Here is no different, having lived outside of England for the better part of nearly thirty years, you learn to expect it in all countries. People here listen to their advocate , oh yes the legal system is based on english law........

Come on everyone open your eyes. This is not a little english province.

As a foreigner in northern Cyprus, you have no rights. Ignore this at your peril.

Even though Brits seem to have a pathological hatred of all things European, at least the south is now constrained by EU legislation and has to accept EU citizens, even Brits(!), have some rights.

Unlike the good old UK that puts the rights of foreigners before the indigenous population the TRNC looks after its own first. You can hardly blame it!

The favourite daydream of *some* Brits in TRNC: EU-rights without the EU. Dream on.

I would say its both racist and discrimitory. Higher prices for brits -TC's can get away with most things, ie motoring offences. Brits do not. Have seen this many many times. Don't feel like I'm treated as a 2nd class citizen, especially by Police. When going through formalaties, ie residency etc, they just dont want to help at all.

I have never witnessed foreigners being treated like this in the UK.

Would that be a dutch cap?

I think that most Brits here are aware that they are treated differently but just accept it, it's really quite simple, if you feel you are being overcharged for something then walk away, otherwise get on with it and accept that we are guests in this country. It happens the world over and in my experience Spain has to be the worst country for ripping off the Brits.

In my dealings with officialdom in the TRNC both for myself and my late parents I always found that individuals treated us in the same manner that we approached them. Treat them like you would want to be treated and they will reciprocate in the same manner usually.

Of course they will charge you a higher price if you let them get away with it. Its the same the whole world over. It also happens in the South.

This is something which I have brought up in the past. In fact there was another board member who compared it with paying a fiver for a burger at Madame Tussauds. My point being that everyone pays a fiver for a burger there it is not dependent upon race.

I asked this board member if he would like to go to an electrical retailer in London, where he lives, to buy a tv and was charged more because he was Cypriot. I am still awaiting his reply.

Whilst at the market in Girne a couple of years ago the guy serving me was told to charge more by someone standing behind him as I was "İngiltere" I told him in perfect Turkish to shove his potatoes where the sun dont shine.

Some of the rascism is blatant.

There certainly is racism in the TRNC and some of it on this thread ;)

msg 2 "silly rules apply to us but not the locals"

examples please.

msg 3 "Deffo the Brits are second class citizens compared to the TC's"

You are either a citizen or not. Certainly citizens have different rights to non citzens as they do in every country. That is why there is a word 'citizen'. Expecting citizens rights when you are not a citizen is unrealistic.

msg 6 "As a foreigner in northern Cyprus, you have no rights."

Just not true.

msg 9 "TC's can get away with most things, ie motoring offences. Brits do not. Have seen this many many times."

Not my personal experience. When stopped one time for a traffic violation and I showed my UK driving license I was left off. Another time I showed my TRNC one and was fined.

msg9 "I have never witnessed foreigners being treated like this in the UK."

Have you lived in the UK as a forienger ?

My father left Cyprus in 1958 to live in the UK, as a legal UK citizen as was his right. I can assure you that he encountered countless examples of 'racism' and discrimination through all his life.

As to the issue of charging different prices to people based on their race, this undoubtedly does happen here as elsewhere. I have suggested to Cyprus Today that they do an investigative piece where they send a Brit into a series of shops and service providers to ask for prices and then send in a TC and establish the true extent of this problem and name and shame those found doing this. So far they havent seemed keen on the idea.

It must also be said that there are many TC businesses who simply do not do this at all. I would also suggest that the motivation for those that do do this is not racism but greed. I think the majority of them would charge anyone more if they thought they could get away with it, regardless of race.

Also seems to work the other way round. Many "service providers" refuse to deal with locals due to non payment. At least we're dumb enough to pay.

I have to support erolz to some extent. The fact that non TC's feel discriminated against even if in the main they might not actually be as erolz points out, should be of major concern to the TRNC government and it's people. Is the fact that it isn't, an example of discrimination in itself though?

i think that there is always good and bad in all people.

some of our tc friends are disgusted with those who try to charge us more because we are brits.

i think you need to remember not all people here are bad.

i have met some not so nice brits as well.

a couple of years ago i shopped around for new aircon units.

i ended up with a price from beko, our tc friend said he would get a better price so he phoned. he was quoted exactly the same price as me!

even he was suprised.

i think it just takes people to stand up for themselves and stop being saps.

you wouldn't stand for it in the uk, why do you take it here?

i'm damn sure i don't.

I remember one of the characters that was around in the early 1980's was sick of being ripped off because he was a Brit, so he had a T-shirt printed that said 'I'm not a ****ing tourist, I live here'
