I've just read an interesting article about the dangers of buying in the south.

You can read it here:

Wow, these are some figures, 100,000 people bogged down waiting for title deeds etc, 30,000 expats included and many been waiting years.

Bent developers, builders re-mortgaging sold properties, lawyers working in collusion with builders, tax fiddles etc etc , where have we heard all this before, I thought, on this scale, this was only a "northern problem"

Not so it seems, rather undermines any claims for the moral high ground.

Donty, as you work within the property industry, do you know how this compares with known figures in TRNC?

Most things in the two sides of the green line are a mirror image. I have friends living permanently in Pathos. During conversations it is a regular thing for one of us to say " thats just the same with us. The time taken to do anything is Cyprus time, north or south!

Any comments from our protagonists in the south on this article? Hi Juliet. Are most of these deeds being held to ensure that they are returned to TCs who owned them in pre 1974 days? I am sure that this is the thinking on the situation by all your GC friends who took over such land.

It kind of makes you rethink the context of the saying "there are two sides to every story" when there are so many problems with developers in both north or south.

I won't say north or south of the border though because this would upset Mark.

i have no idea the figures for the north but not as much as that im sure as we only have a fraction of the business. better to look at percentages i suppose.

Its no different in most of the property hotspots Spanish problems are well documented, Thailand is a minefield as are most north African nations i'm told, and even Dubai has its issues.

If you're going to buy somewhere exotic(ish) and developing, get ready to put up with unrefined legal systems and governments.

This is only one unhappy customer in the South - there are alot more unhappy customers in the occupied area, correct?

There are issues in the South with the title deeds, but that has been going on for years. There is not the high profile of problems with developers in the South with builders absconding with money, not finishing building projects and leaving people without there house, money or land. The Conor O'Dwyer case is high profile and there are sure to be problems with other developers but i would think 99% of the people who have problems have there properties . North or South there are good and bad developers you only here about the bad ones. One thing i like about the houses in the North is the design. They are far more pleasing to look at instead of the boxes built in the South.I bought in the South for piece of mind yes i paid more but i had a good developer, solicitor and i have just got my title deeds and this was only finished 4 yrs ago.
