I have never rented a car form the south before and have no clue what their prices are compared to the north, i usually get a great deal from Sam's car rental from Sam's pub. but because I have to fly into the south this time (I have no choice) may consider renting from Larnaca.

Anyone have any idea what a daily rate maybe for about 35 days a medium sized car.Or can recommend a good company.

thanks in advance.

Hi - we used these guys at new year. They are fine about taking car north. They meet you as you leave the airport and the car is in the car park. All very easy - good cars, seems to be reasonably priced and efficient service.

Turboturk - you must bear in mind though as soon as you take the car over the border your insurance changes to third party and I have heard if you break down they arent too keen to come and sort it out!

hi we have used fontana twice they are very friendly and as they say meet you at the exit do the paper work and take you to the car but we found we had a hire milage car with lots of dents i dont know if thats because i told then i was staying in the north or unlucky. having worked out the cost of fuel both ways extra insurance at the border it was cheaper to get a taxi, and hire in the north plus the pease of mind of being fully insured and close to the hire company in case of breask down bob

Hello " New Neighbours"

I am in the process of buying a property in Ozankoy and am coming out in April. I intend to hire a car in the South and bring it over to the North. My questions are A. If you buy the top up insurance at the border does this only cover you third party, and B. How much does it cost for ten days cover?

Thanks for any help you can give me, I've a feeling I may be a regular visitor to the forum until I am more acquainted with the TRNC!

You are only covered third party over the border. If you break down or have an accident its up to you to return it to the south. Not sure I would want to take this risk?

Hello Verading - we hired a car in the south with no problems - it is 3rd party insurance though so just drive carefully. To answer your question it is around £15 for 1 months cover. You buy it at the border.

Hi Vera,

I would and have on many ocassions hired from the north and driven over but you would only be covered for third party, but its all down to personal choice.you could come over in a taxi and then hire a car in the north.Bloody rules and regs eh,good luck and keep posting,

Regards,

Paul.

Hiring a car in the south and taking it to the north is not a problem until you have a problem a major breakdown or worse still a crash.

If I were you I would think twice about hiring a car in the south and taking it to the north, you are only covered by 3rd party insurance, if you have a prang or a breakdown it is your responsibilty to return the car to the hire company in the south, they will not help you.

Remember the standard of driving in the TRNC is poor, in 2007 there were 47 deaths in traffic accidents, this works out at about 17 out of every 100,000 whereas in Europe the average annual death toll is only 4-5 people in every 100,000.

The number of road deaths in the TRNC has decreased over the last 3 years but as you can see from the statistics you appear to be more than 3 times likely to be killed in a road accident than you are in Europe.

Thanks for your help, I guess it could all be summed up by the sentiments of that well known philosopher "Dirty Harry" when he said "Are you feeling lucky punk"..................trouble is, I don't know if I do!

Ask yourself the following question "would you hire a car in the UK or drive your own car valued at circa £8k with only 3rd party insurance" if your answer is yes go ahead and hire a car in the south if it is no then you know what to do
