I went into Atakara today and made purchases totaling approx 24 TL they asked for 34 TL!

I paid believing I had made a mistake and then demanded a receipt. On producing the receipt the "Till girl" said I had to add 16 TL to the bill as she had not entered one of my purchases, but this still only came to 23.75 TL she apologised and refunded the difference.

On thinking about this I am sure that the fact that one large item was not on the bill is possibly due to some sort of scam! the only way it was discovered was due to her poor arithmetic.

Always make sure you get a receipt!

Same sort of thing happened to me - when I asked for the receipt it appeared she had not rung it up!

If it's not rung up, then as far as the till's concerned, it hasn't been sold. At the end of the day she'll have more money in her till than the till says she should have.

Where do you think the extra money goes? It's one of the most basic scams.

I'd be a bit careful about making any direct accusations on the BB. Better to speak to the management of Atakara, or failing that watch your purchases carefully (take a calculator and total as you buy) as they are rung through the till.

In Lemar in January when I was there on a visit I saw one of the till girls take a 50TL note from the till and when she thought no-one was watching she put it into her pocket.

I had a similar thing happen today at Lemar in Karakum. "6 Efes for 10.20 tl" in a wire basket. Took them to the checkout, surprise surprise,13.20 tl on the till !!! Called the supervisor over,he said they had been put there by mistake...ho ho...

Needless to say, they went right back.

I'll never shop in Lemar again.

I agree Dee, the Supreme staff are terrific, if you forget anything they knock on the window to let you know, if you don't have enough loose change they say don't worry we know you bring it in tomorrow, always a smile on their faces so pleasant - can you see that happening in Tescos or Sainburys

I did not ask to speak to the manager as I had an apology and got a refund. It was not until later that I realised that there was something amiss with the fact that one item had not been scanned. It must be the owners of Atakara who are at a loss here!

The favorite scam at Atakara is 200 turkcell units that you dont get.We got done and when we went back the girl on the till produced 10 ytl note before we said anything at all!! The manager said,What is the problem? you have your money back !

We went in to Lemars just the other day to get some groceries gave the the girl some money walked off not realising that that we needed change and the girl came running after us waving about 6 lire in her hand she did not have to she could have easily pocketed her self we would not have noticed.

we thought that made a nice change because we where having a bad week at the time.

I dont know about tesco or sainsbury's but if i had done that at Morrisons when I worked there (let the customer off without paying the full bill) I would have been instantly dismissed.

Well - after reading quite a number of threads about supermarket 'scams' in NC - we always check our receipts before leaving the store.

I think such a scam does not occur if you pay by a credit card. Or does it?

You should all take care when paying in sterling, I have lost money in the TL change they give you. I did take it up with a supervisor in Tempo once and got a refund but it has happened also in Lemar

I have nothing but praise for the staff in supermarkets, having to deal with people who do not speak Turkish. It is a boring enough job as a till operator.

Mistakes are made every where in the world, if you deal with it at the point of error mistakes are easily resolved.

Personally see no reason why anyone should pay in sterling the young ladies in supermarket are not bureau de change personell and have to use a calculator and generally seek advice from manager. There are enough exchange places available.

What about the scam at Lemars. People have been going in to buy the "special offers" that were advertised in the Cyprus Today and being told all sorts of things as to why there are no offers - such as - "Only in Lefkosa shop"? - "that offer was last week"? + things that are on offer are being charged different prices to what is displayed. We are now checking our receipts every time.

Had to laugh at one of the "special offers" in Lemars last week. Cheese reduced from 5.90 tl to 2.95tl. Big sign on shelf advertising the campaign. I took a packet, but not trusting them took it to the scanning machine and sure enough it showed 5.90tl. Went to put it back on the shelf and one of the assistants said - that not campaign and gave me a different pack. Off I went to the scanning machine again, still 5.90tl. As I went back to the shelf another assistant appeared carrying loads of the stuff which had been left at the tills. He ripped the sign down and said to me "Campaign Finished".

cyprusis home,

Many of the supermarkets offer to take foreign currency and provide all their tills with the current exchange rates and a calculator so that they do not have to 'seek advice from the general manager'. The supermarkets offer this service so that you don't have to go hunting down an exchange bureau, of which there is not one near me that I know of, and I for one am very grateful for this. I only pointed out that twice I have received wrong change so now I double check it.

my local shop is always trying to short change so i prefer to pay by credit card now but at the end of the day what's in excess of the total rung up on the till goes in their pockets. someone told us that they know they can sometimes get 100tl a day doing this. with poor wages in this country and everything going up except the wages i don't suppose you can blame them for trying. everyone just has to be alert when parting with money.

I think it should be made compulsory to pay with credit or debit cards in the TRNC and, even now its starting to happen, in Turkey. Then we will pay what we are charged. On a recent holiday to Antalya I "lost" 15TL in short change.

I am aware that this is likely to cause prices to rise as the shop keeper only gets 97% of the actual amount that you pay, as a the other 3% goes to the credit company in fees for the privilege of the shop keeper being able to offer credit facilities.

It's not the money, it's the principle!

Bloody short change specialists reside in Supreme supermarket. One lady in particular ALWAYS tries to do me out of change even though I've pulled her up on it numerous times. I now watch her calculations like a hawk.

This thread has now reached 28 postings. Are the Atakara supermarket aware of what is being said about them?

I use it because its the closest to the Kavanlar site in Alsancak.

Surely they should have some sort of right of reply, if not directly, then by someone who can post it for them? I thought that one of the Muctars in Alsancak owned it.

Just trying to get some balance here.
