Folowing my banning for making some unsavoury coments about the said emporium Hippo would like to apologise for any misconceptions he may have portrayed and any distress or harm it may have caused.

I was wrong to suggest that Guido's did anything to circumnavigate the importation laws here in the TRNC i am sure that they import all thier goods including the Dutch vegetables, fresh (alive lobsters) scalops quiennies cheeses salamies and pates directly here.

What i didnt think when i made so rash a statement as to suggest that they were South Cyprus goods, is that you cant import them ,there is a ban on meat and dairy produce being brought accross the border.

I am sorry guido and llili i just wasnnt thinking i again apologise unreservably.

i would like to take this opurtunity to wish you all success in your buisiness endvours it must be quite difficult in this economic down turn especially having yourcar snatched by the customs.

I hope this posting will go some way to making amends

good morning Hippo welcome back to the forum. i make my own pate. the lobsters and the scallops as well as the savoy cabbage ( from Holland) get flown in from the south and i am sure that you know it is not forbidden to bring fish or vegetables across the green line. my car was due to go out of the country and if i want i can still do so. the jeep is 15 years old with the UK value of about 1000 stg. the custom cannot charge me for the duties because of the car's age and doesn't make sense to take the car back to UK. it would cost me more of the car's value. apology accepted

regards

guido

Dear Guido-thankyou for accepting my apology Just a little tip for you, the allowance for importations is for your personal use not for a business- i wouldn't want you to get into any trouble now we have become friends.

Interesting to hear that the lobsters, scallops and the cabbages get flown in from the South.

Are there direct flights now? This is very good news. Is that from Larnaca to Ercan or where?

Shopping in the south.... message 6 by Lilli

we have to go as our products cannont be sourced here particulary good italian and french wines and the fresh herbs. Also the cheese has to be imported as do the fresh lobster scallops etc. Only once I have experiences rudness. In fact in the supermarkets if they dont stock any of the italian procudts that we require they will endeavour to obtain them for us and they call us once they have them.Batterboy I think that they are also feeling the credit crunch like elsewhere hence he long faces. However I must agree that like elsewhere since the euro prices have doubled. We try to get as much as we can here but its not always fresh or easy.

Message 16

Judy we will always take you. i read on here that you can get a bus for about 3 euro to the mall. let me know he goes usualy tues. thurs and saturday occasionally friday if we get lobster and fresh fish orders. xxxxx

Are Lobsters and Scallops classified as fish or what?

Is it a fish, for this purpose, if it lives in the sea. Is a Crayfish a fish?

The meat and dairy ban is still in place or then again it might not be!! Will depend on you taking the risk, being stopped, all confiscated and fine imposed.

Glad it is your risk!!!.

Lobsters and Crayfish are crustaceans, scallops are molluscs, so no they are not fish. Arent most people sick and tired of other board members, (who seem to have nothing better to do), having a go at people in the TRNC who are trying to make an honest living. The reason a lot of produce has to be brought in by friends or bought in the South is not because people are wanting to blatantly break any laws. It is because of the UNFAIR and UNJUST embargoes and restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, and those who have chosen to live here. Good luck to you Guido and Lilli

Dear Bowman

Those who come to the "TRNC" to live / work know the downsides... and WHY it is relatively unspoilt .

Let's keep it in perspective...

POST EDITED.

Mark lets keep this thread on topic.

Hippo,

I have reviewed your "sorry" posts and is it just me or, does anyone else feel the same way!

"i am sure that they import all thier goods including the Dutch vegetables, fresh (alive lobsters) scalops quiennies cheeses salamies and pates directly here." === > Sarcasm

"What i didnt think when i made so rash a statement as to suggest that they were South Cyprus goods, is that you cant import them ,there is a ban on meat and dairy produce being brought accross the border." === > Obvious

"I am sorry guido and llili i just wasnnt thinking i again apologise unreservably." === > Spelt unreservedly incorrectly. By mistake or, on purpose?

"i would like to take this opurtunity to wish you all success in your buisiness endvours it must be quite difficult in this economic down turn especially having yourcar snatched by the customs. === > Sarcasm

I think that "So, Sorry, my fault." would have been better!

So, I take it then, that you would not approve of anyone breaking the laws of the TRNC whether blatantly or otherwise.

Or, is it your view that it would be OK for people to break laws which they thought unfair or otherwise did not like?

Or, perhaps you think it is OK to break laws as long as you are not blatant about it.

Mimomar - I agree. Hardly genuine sentiments. And the opportunity to throw in the "Dutch" reference too (presumably for obvious reasons of having a dig at a certain other poster).

"i am sure that they import all thier goods including the Dutch vegetables, fresh (alive lobsters) scalops quiennies cheeses salamies and pates directly here."

"i would like to take this opurtunity to wish you all success in your buisiness endvours it must be quite difficult in this economic down turn especially having yourcar snatched by the customs ======== WAS THIS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE? If not, this announcement by a third party was extremely below the belt and unnecessary.

Very Sad that such insincerity is shown in what purports to be an "Apology".

Even sadder that the poster has so much time to devote to generally ridiculing DC and rubbishing fellow ex-pat's businesses.

===> Thank you for the "DC part" of your message and I agree with all of it. However, this member "Hippo" cannot ridicule me. We are not in the same league. This illiterate, sad old gentleman only ridicules himself.

If someone can provide quality products not otherwise available and is paying their business taxes, who gives a monkeys how it gets here! Bravo to our islands importers!

Regarding imports in general:

Many import taxes and rules here are ridiculous and how much of this money ends up where it should anyway? I am told by Cypriot friends that most ends up in the custom guys, or, some millionaire ministers pocket!

Re whiter than white ex-pats:

In the UK the rules are there for everyone and people would dib in the own granny for failing to indicate when making a turn but come to the Med and you find that they do it differently. Rules don't need apply if your uncle is in the cops, is in government etc.

I will be on the lookout for Brits failing to indicate whilst driving and hope to make my first citizens arrest very shortly.

When i go to the R.O.C. i need to exchange my TL into Euro with a good loss on the exchange. I use my car, i pay the insurance(25 euro per month), i use my time (i could spend my time making more fresh pasta or PATE) just for making sure i can provide BASIC products otherwise not available in OUR BELOVED TRNC but available anywhere else on the planet ( years ago i finded fresh mozzarella in a back street of NAIROBI). I sell this products because it is a demand for it. What you have failed to realise is that when we sell this products, we pay tax to the TRNC governament (recipts or fatura)but we are unable to deduct the costs of this products because they are not tax deductable in the TRNC. If i went to my accountant and presented my recipts from the south he would laugh on my face. So before assuming that we try to avoid to pay tax or duties think long and hard and after if you still thinking that we are wrong then have your saying.I pay lot more taxes then you. Trust me on that!!.

I am sorry that i failed to explain myself correctly; i dint mean you can fly from Larnaca to the TRNC i meant the products get flown in the south and not in from the south ( message 3). I think you know what i meant.
