I have never seen it, not even fresh cream just the long life stuff. You can make your own, though I have only done it with fresh. Just add some lemon juice and keep it in the fridge overnight.

maggy i have only ever seen it in the south. try the suzme yogurt instead.( its the thick one) i love sour cream but have resorted to the yogurt with a little crushed garlic added as a dip for my battered mushrooms.

re msg 1 Would you consider something akin to "creme fraiche" an alternative..? If so look out for Smetana in GC shops - Christies Dairy - or if you feel brave and see a "Russian Producte" shop ask for Smetana... Even if they only speak Russian or Greek - they will understand.. Wifey uses it to make blini ( pancakes) and it is served with many meals.. If there are SO many Russians living in the north ;) .. you should be able to find Smetana there.......

mmmmmm is right, Smetana is virtually identical to Sour Cream and my wife happily uses Sour Cream for her Russian dishes. You can get Sour Cream (Smetana) and Cottage Cheese at the main Hur Deniz shop in Girne. They don't always have it on display but ask. There is another small Russian shop in Girne called Kashtan. I can find it but I can't give you exact directions because I can't remember the names of the shops or street names where you need to turn. If will make a point of noting the turns next time I am in Girne and if you have no luck at Hur Deniz then let me know and I will post the directions to Kashtan.

Hi JJ, re msg 5 The Russian Cottage Cheese is called "Tvork" - the simplest English spelling pronunciation- and if mixed with Smetana and put on toast with a dollop of blackberry jam ... yummmmmy Wifey finds Sainsbury's Creme fraiche - full fat - is an adequate Smetana replacement and it goes great with her Ukrainian Borsch ( Beetroot soup) ;)

Mark - going off topic here briefly, but I wonder whether you could do me a favour please? When you end sentences and (I assume) wish to put a blue smiley face on, please press colon (not semi-colon) followed by the bracket above the 0. If, of course, you're NOT trying to put on a smiley face, please accept my apologies. J
