Nice to see Obama say that Turkey needs to be allowed into the EU, even before he gets there.

Also nice to hear Sarkozy put his foot in his mouth by saying that this is an EU matter and nothing to do with USA. What Sarkozy doesn't realise as a "new boy" in NATO, is that Turkey in the EU means Turkey stays in NATO.

Given a choice between Turkey in NATO and cheese eating, surrender monkeys in NATO, I know who I'd want on my side. Sarkozy could also find himself getting a slap for contradicting Obama.

hi vaughan

i think the french public are none to happy with playboy sarkosy, so i hope they vote him out come election time.

i watched his wife in the photo shoots last week, first of all she was being such a poser, then she looked totally bored which i felt was pretty bad mannered of her.

what is she doing with an old guy like that anyway?

Turkey threatened to veto the choice of the Dane Anders Fogh Rasmussen if he was chosen as the new head of NATO. They didn't veto him in the end as an assistants post was promised, by Obama, for a Turkish general and that Turkish commanders would be present at the alliance's command.

USA wants Turkey in EU and NATO. NATO wants Turkey in NATO. Starting to look like Turkey is holding most of the cards.

Dear "TRNC"Vaughan, re msg 1/4

Let' face it.. Sarkozy DOES represent a dubious faction ( re Turkey's membership) so Obama needs to be "nice" to him, too.

I'm not sure how a nation needing IMF help can dictate terms.. and if it is threatening to move more closely to "another" camp - the US should call their bluff.

IF you are right about TR "holding all the cards" then the US must be lousy negotiators !!

Regards NATO this is a classic case of the Pot Calling the Kettle Black! The French have not been members for years, then suddenly they have joined up.

As new boy Sarcosie should show respect for USA, Turkey, UK, and the other 20+ members.

Hi mmmmmmmmmmmm,

Just because Turkeys economy isn't in great shape (whose is, these days?) we shouldn't think it doesen't have a lot of military clout in it's own backyard. Take a look at North Korea - poor as a church mouse but got everybody with their finger "on the button".

I didn't say Turkey held "all the cards", I said it was "holding most of the cards". With Obama backing Turkeys EU bid and Turkey chucking its weight around in NATO, I'd say a lot of people were taking them very seriously. You'd be a braver man than me to call a Turks bluff, BTW. The Turkish PM, President and particularly the Generals are not people you want to f--- with.

Sorry Vaughan, really could not leave that one unedited. AJ

RE msg 1, TRNCVaughan > cheese eating, surrender monkeys in NATO <

=> The "your quote" are fighting and taking casualties in Afghanistan, side by side with NATO partners, in a UN sanctioned operation. I admit: they are not participating in the infamous Bush/Blair conspiracy, the illegal operation/occupation in Iraq. But: should we blame the soldiers or the government? Just a question for the record.

=> If their NATO partners US, UK and France had sent the promised F-16 planes, the "your quote" probably wouldn't have had to lay down their weapons. The heaviest armaments of "your quote" were .30 automatic weapons - against Serbian tanks and cannons. Also for the record.

=> The government of "your quote" is certainly to blame (which I have fully admitted elsewhere before) - but don't insult the soldiers who, far too weakly armed, just carried out orders from their government.

Hi DC,

Don't get me wrong for a minute about whether I'm talking about the french gov or their soldiers. I have total respect for any man who signs up and is prepared to get shot at for a living. It's the military desicions of the french gov since the 1st world war that leave a lot to be desired.

Hi DC,

The Cloggies are my favourite foreigners and their soldiers are as good as you would expect for blokes that wear hairnets under their berets. It's the Frogs that are cheese eating surrender monkeys. Ask the Germans.

Dear "TRNC"Vaughan re msg 8

You seem to think I don't know that TR is (militarily) the BIG boy around the Eastern Med..

Please don't confuse this with the right to "steamroller" Human Rights.

The RoC is already an EU member and if you think the USA is going to make a difference - when President O, is going out of his way to NOT behave like President Bush....

Your vision of how things get done is very much last century ;)

You also forget that I deal with Mainland Turks on a daily basis and probably visit more often than you ! ;)

Hi AJ, I've read it...

I se nought changed in the scheme of things

1/ the EU STILL decide who joins - not the USA - please remember I WANT TR in..and I think you don't !

2/ Rasmussen is STILL going to get the post.

3/ If Cyprus HAD behaved like this TR wouldn't even be talking about EU accession, now. Thank Goodness, they don't try and negotiate TR style ! ;)

DC;

you`re obviously not a Simpsons fan, "cheese eating surrender monkeys" is a term of endearment used in the good ol` US of A purely to describe the French. As for Srebrenica, it happened, it was the fault of your government and the UN and buggered up the reputation of your countries armed forces. None of the Dutch soldiers were harmed as they stood by and allowed the Serbs free reign. Get over it.

Hi Gardenmaker,

I may well join the zerochlor thread when I have an opportunity to see and maybe try the product. Until then it would be pure speculation for me to comment either for or against. However, I welcome any new product which is environment friendly, safe, efficacious and cost effective.

"Your vision of how things get done is very much last century ;)"

So is mainland Turkey.

"You also forget that I deal with Mainland Turks on a daily basis and probably visit more often than you ! ;)"

You might have forgotten that we have a fairly high concentration of them here, and many of them carry guns

Latest news...

Announced on TV today that the Turkish President has agreed to allow US forces a base in Turkey as an exit route to the north (Afghanistan?)...

on the basis that all weapons are made secure.

Also Obama has today landed in Baghdad for a previously an unannounced visit.

Turkish air traffic control must have been on drugs as they sent Obama to Iraq instead of back to Washington! Well, that's what the BBC said, he was going home state side!

Seems Erdogan is honest enough to say what are his long term goals, i.e moving further and further away from Kemalism. :(

This is the main reason why I think that Turkey should not join the EU. It will be one hot potato for the EU to sort out after the event.

Much the same as some peoples postings on this site then.

Do you still wear that safari jacket?

Hope you have had it cleaned since I saw you in it last.

Oh yep I will ask you once more but doubt if I will get a reply.

AJ, msg 36

I suppose Mark thinks the things would get even worse if EU rejects Turkey. Indeed, Erdogan had already in the past mentioned “alternatives” that his country would have if it failed to get along with the Europeans. Kinda blackmail, and what do you have to lose?
