I'm a newby to this forum, though I have holidayed in Kyrenia a couple of times, first time some 15 years ago. Will be there again in Sept09

I have followed some of the cost of living posters on the guide with interest, but my question is a cross section of the cost of food i.e meals out , and beer/drinks that a tourist like me would expect to pay. Perhaps you know of pubs/bars that have a good reputation or otherwise.

Vague question perhaps, but its a start

thanks

Depends on what part of the UK you're from and level of cuisine you expect, but rule of thumb is budget on UK Pub prices for beer and grub. Complain if it's not up to scratch, refusing to pay if restaurateur is nonchalant about your problematic plate of food or service. Woe betide should you like your steak rare, lamb(?)pink and fish succulent! Check your bill these days.

Hi again Brinsley We still do Blue steaks for certain customers and our lamb is always pink. I beleive they cant sell blue steak anymore in UK or hang game now. Is this correct. xxxx

Lilli, all depends where you go, I still go to a licensed game butcher out in the sticks where game is still hung and most of the restraunts in the villages around that area still hang thier game.

Hi TheSaints thats good to know I thought the PC brigage or the EU were taking that away also.My second grandson goes out with a shoot every saturday and often he is allowed to keep the game which he promplty sells to his friends fathers restaurant where they are hung. All be it that is also out in the sticks. We have had to train our butcher here to hang the meat for us and the difference is remarkable, you can cut it with a spoon. tak care xxxxx

Lilli, Many decades ago Brussels banned game to be sold with innards which of course never stopped the French however, stopped all the great pre-Christmas west country market town auctions for poultry & game in the UK. Steak Tartare can be be found on the menu of any self respecting restaurant worth its soul, so no problems ordering a blue steak. The problem arises with dodgy outlets which do not hang their meat long enough or lie on the type of cut they advertise. Case in point was in an upmarket designer chain of Burger restaurants in London which advertised their burgers as 100% Prime Scotch meat but when asked for mine rare I was told that I had to sign a disclaimer form which I was happy to do until the waitress was told by the owner that the said 'forms were out of stock'! They were out of paying customers and beers as we stormed out in disgust! They were liars as no forms ever existed nor printed by Westminster City Council!

Well Richard it seem to happen everywhere. I have never heard of having to sign a disclaimer in Uk and Guido likes his steak tartare. Imagine that happening here get them to sign a disclaimer. Sadly you didnt get your meal. xxxx

Cymro. Where are you staying in September, we stay at the Pia Bella half board, food good and the hotel keep the prices of beer and spirits reasonable so guests don't need to leave the hotel.

Lilli, With due respect your Husband is Italian and does know his way around the kitchen, no doubt having had the best teacher of all, his Mother! Must come and see you soon, maybe with my half Italian Mother who arrives week Sunday!

Woodspeckie, We are undecided as of yet but it could be The ship or Pia Bella.

The answers to my question seems to have gone off topic a bit, but thank you for your points on costs at the Pia Bella.

As a comparison we eat out here in Welsh Pubs for between £5 to £6 each for most meals. Restaurants vary in price depending on quality £10 to whatever you want to spend.

On the other hand a pint of beer/lager can vary in our city centre from £2 to £2.50 by just crossing the road to a different pub such as wetherspoons.

Thus my question, its the range of costs.

thanks again

in the past we have found the ship expensive for drinks but we usually go to local cypriot places.

You will not pay any less than you are at present during your outings in Wales.

our friends won't eat lamb unless its over cooked, if it is pink they have a fit.

Hi Lilli

A very Happy Easter to you too, and everyone else who may be looking in. I'm not a Cardiff boy but further west towards the emerald Isle in Swansea.

I am reasonably familiar with Cardiff's Caroline street but only during rugby

Internationals its where I get my fish and chips before going back west.

The area has had a recent upgrade and has many new fine restaurants and pubs, even a Hard Rock Cafe if thats a plus.

Back on topic (no offense to the Welsh intended) I have had a visitor this week so have eaten out in different restaurants.

Guler's Fish Restaurant in Karaoglanoglu - small meze (9 dishes) followed by fabulous fresh grilled sea bream, chips and salad, bottle of wine plus a couple of bottles of Efes 25TL per head for the food, 25TL for the wine and 4TL per beer.

Oleander Indian Restaurant in Karaoglanoglu - poppadoms, main course curry each, rice, two side dishes, naan bread, four Smirnoff vodka and mixer, two pints of Efes, coffee and brandy (on the house) total bill for three 123TL (40TL for the drinks).

Cano's Green Palace in Karsiyaka (local TC style restaurant) - tandoori chicken, chicken sis, kofte (4 huge and scrumptious) plus chips and salad, bottle of wine and two bottles of Efes 70TL.

Lunch in the square in Kyrenia (can never remember which one it is Shiraz or Window Bar but the one in the middle) - three grilled chicken salads and three freshly squeezed orange juices 39.5
