I usually go to Spain for my annual pilrimage to the sun but am being put off by the value of the Euro. Is there anything to recommend North Cyprus over main land Turkey, I am not a tourist my break is for relaxing in the sun. Any recommendations on hotels and travel and any idea who it is best to travel with I understand there is a firm called Direct Traveller?

Agnes - TRNC is rather like Marmite - you either love it or hate it. We have a holiday home in N.C. and have been coming here for 19 years - we obviously love it, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea (or Marmite). If I were you, I'd take my chances with Turkey, particularly if you've enjoyed Spain over the years.

Agnes, it depends what you want from a holiday. If you want confirmed good sun, relaxation, and reduced tourist populated environment, I would recommend NC. I must admit though, I have never holidayed in Turkey.

Up to you!

Unfortunately I would agree with those saying go for Turkey. I hate to say that but the facilities/opportunities for tourists are not that good. OK if you simply stay within a hotel complex and don't mind paying the hotel prices. I'd also recommend hiring a car if you want to explore which will obviously add to the cost. Travelling time is also longer.

rowlo - take your blinkers off now and again for goodness sake!! Everyone is entitled to a point of view and not everyone's is as blind-sided as yours.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been acquainted (well) with the TRNC.

I would say this: if what you're looking for, Agnes, is predictability, than perhaps Turkey is for you.

If you are looking for a relatively untouched piece of heaven, together with sun, beaches, good restaurants and beautiful water, than perhaps give NC a chance. It's a surprise; an adventure.

I know what I'd do!

Up to you!

It all depends what you are looking. In Turkey you have the main resorts with plenty of things to do many restaurants but the main places tend to be dearer and can get too crowded for me e.g.Bodrum or Marmaris.

Personally in Turkey I would recommend places like Akyaka and Cavus bay - where it is quiet and as local Turkish people tend to go there it is a little cheaper.

Within N Cyprus you have Girne (Kyrenia) which is the main tourist spot but have to travel outside for a beach - though there are numerous hotels with direct access to a beach. Hiring a car is must to see the North part of the island and the bonus is they drive on the same side as the road as us in the UK. There is some wonderful mountain scenery, the Karpas peninisular is beautiful and you can also stay around Gazimugusa (Famagusta), Bogaz and further at along at Bafra is the Artemis hotel - a large hotels with plenty of facilities. There is also one or two Hotels on the Karpas if you want to completely chill out.

Been to both over the years. Have recommended Kyrenia to my friends and all have loved it and would return. If you want a holiday without lager louts that's the place. Unfortunately in the last few years the mass building of dreadful estates has somewhat spoilt the ambience of that part of the island but that needn't affect your holiday. Go for it - it's brilliant.

Hi there seems to be great value holidays to turkey and all inclusive which makes it great value. However its horses for courses. Paadise can be founf here in the TRNC you just have to explore the Karpas and the other areas mentioned. Yes the flight prices etc may sound expensive but you really can escape the tourist trap here if that is your desire . Come and experienc then you can cross it off your list or add it to your list xxxxxx

I just do not understand people who live here, talk of this place as if it is rubbish!

Why then don't you move to Turkey?

We normally visit NC about 5 times a year, went to Spain last April for a change and regreted it 2 days after we arrived.

NC is a great place to holiday and there is plenty of good value hotel's to choose from

We go to Turkey May & September, Kyrenia Dec & Jan,

Keep away from Marmaris, Bodrum itself but Yalikavak, Turgatries, Gumsluk on the Penisualr are great, if you want to keep away from Kids DONT go to Kusadasi, when we fly to Izmir the plane is always full of families going there to the all inclusive places. Cesme is a lovely place not many tourists go there Doga Hotel only a 2 star but good value and clean Thomas Cook, mainly turkish people from Izmir & Istanbul. Dalyan another good place but 20 mins travel either by dolmus or boat to the best beach. Akyaka is a paradise again not many tourists and a cheaper place recommend the Yucelen Hotel with Anatolian Sky holidays. Kyrenia we stay at the Pia Bella 20 mins from town and a beautiful hotel 2 pools and plenty of space in lovely gardens.

I go to N.Cyprus about 6 times a year as I have a penthouse near

Kyrenia. Since I worked here in 2000 & in Turkey before, I love it

Depends what you want, but it is relatively unspoilt, traditional, wonderful

beaches, good food. It is the divine island.

Have enjoyed many places in Turkey too, Marmaris, Fetihye, Bodrum. etc.

N.Cyprus is more laid back though.

Agnes, The Riverside is a bit dated especially the bar area, also you will need a car because of its location , owners and staff very friendly and will pick you up from airport at half the cost of a taxi. At Riverside make sure you dont get a room near the aviary or you will be woken at 6am every morning without fail.

Riverside did have a free courtesy bus that would drop off/collect anywhere between the complex and Girne centre - don't know if they still have it.

Also their car hire rates were always very good.
