I have just been given an online quote from the link on the Cyprus44 home page to pick a car up at Paphos Airport when I come over in July. I am flying to Paphos but spending 10 days in Kyrenia.

As a precaution before I paid for the booking I phoned the Harlow office of Carjet to make sure I would be able to take the hire car over the border to the Turkish side and was told that this would not be allowed.

Izzet, whats the point of advertising car hire on your (wonderful) site that cannot be used in the TRNC?

I thought you could take hire cars over from south to north but not the other way around. Maybe you can but they just won't admit it to you. If that's the case you'll have to buy your own insurance at the border and hope you don't break down.

I always understood that you could hire a car in the south and take it over the border as long as you pay your insurance at the border.

Maybe I should have kept quiet?

The booking was to be made on a uk website using a uk credit card so they have the security of knowing they can get me if I did a bunk with the car.

Oh well their loss!

Certain car hire companies do not allow their vehicles to be taken over the border, check the conditions of contract prior to booking.

We use easycar, who sub contract Europcar's vehicles. They do allow their cars to be taken to the north, but advise against it, as breakdown/recovery is not covered.

Hi If it's any help, none of the major car hire companies in the south 'allow' their cars to go from South to North 'oficially' but they know it happens, you pays your money and you takes your chances with the extra insurance you pay for at the border, in my opinion it is better to get a seperate car hire for each side to be safe as I do know of one family who had a breakdown and had to get a tow truck back to the border at quite a cost to themselves as the third party insurance did not cover breakdown and to avoid embarrasment or problems they got the car back over the border then phoned the car hire company in the South to say they were stranded in South Nicosia, food for thought

Interesting! I've been over the border loads of times and not realised about breakdown cover. However in october last year I met a rep who put me in touch with a dealer who covered us completely. This was in protaras. It must be possible elsewhere.

Whenever i hire a car from the south to drive to the north i dont mention where i am going any more, its not worth the grief and horror stories about the north (greek propaganda) im more street wise now.

Why not try a company in the North who will pick you up from the South. I seem to remember Bird rentacar do this and I'm sure there are a few others who do it as well.

Thanks Karen that would be ideal. One reason I want to hire a car is to prevent my friends having to trek down to Paphos to pick me up.

Another reason is a 60th birthday treat, which is the reason behind the trip!

Hi Karen & Dusterbruce,

I always use birdrentacar when I am in Cyprus and it is true they will collect you from airports in the south but they charge £100 return from Larnaca and I would imagine more from Paphos so they are not cheap. There used to be a

guy on this forum called cyprus chaufaeur (don't think i've spelt that correctly)

he used to do it cheaper, might be worth looking him up.

Hi jo,

Where is your place? I am asking because I know they charge an extra £10.00 each way to take you to Esentepe & beyond to Tatlisu.

Best private chauffer is Charlie who owns Coffee World in Kyrenia.

He is a very friendly Scot who has been in TRNC for a year now.

Charges £30 each way to Larnaca, £15 to Ercan.

His local number is 392 8155403.

Tell him Paul and Janet recommended him

He picked me up one morning at 3 to get a very early flight from Ercan. He was there dead on the dot, friendly and amenable.

oh god some of you are quite brave , driving around with no cover for the north from the south , i would'nt like to risk it , knowing my luck . but how would affect me for instance ? with american express i dont pay for any insurance or waver damage ect , does that mean i am covered for north and south , it does'nt say anything to the contrary in the handbook.

regards simbas

Dodger,

I meant does the car hire company that you use ask for a Cyprus address?

I have been told today of a company http://www.cyprus-car.com that allows you to take a car to the trnc, collect/drop off at Paphos airport.

They usually ask me, but all I say is I am staying in a private villa, then they just ask for a mobile contact number.

Like dodger, I never tell them I'm going over the border.

Hi All

In previous posts I have said that I have used easycar for car rental as they allow their vehicles over the border from south to north. ( we did this 3 times in 2007)

It looks like their t&c's have recently changed, as their conditions now state:

Vehicles are not permitted to be taken into the area of cyprus under control of the Turkish Army.

Lokks like I am going to have to refer to 'plan B' for our next visit !

Thanks for pointing this out to me Gaynor.
