Can anyone tell me why i cannot get a signal in England, reason is i have plenty of credit on it but as i can get over every 3 months or so when i put it in my fone in TRNC it will not activate. Is this because after a lenght of time of not using the sim Turkcell cut it off unless more credit is put on.

Leave the island with a credit balance and it should still be there on your return. Best to buy a card before you leave and then enter it into the phone on your arrival. A lot of pay-as-you-go SIM's in countries around Europe will not work once out of the country of issue unfortunately. HTH Guin

Firstly you must use your phone within 3 months-make a call/renew credit otherwise the sim is blocked until you put more credit on and any outstanding credit is added Second to use the sim outside TRNC you inform turkcell and go onto international roaming but you cant send texts

I have a Turkcall SIM card and I was under the impression that after 3 months away from TRNC I would have to buy another. From the posting above it appears I am wrong. Does anyone know the minimum amount I can add, as a new SIM costs 20ytl if I remember rightly? Also - will the credit remaining from the previous time still be there? Thanks.

10tl is usual but 5tl is possible and yes the remaining credit is still there I think that if the number is not used for 12 months the number can be re-allocated but not 100% on the last bit

I've been here 2 years and have a Turkcell pay as you go sim card,if it goes 3 months without use the money is lost regardless of how much is on it, I do get a text reminder 1 week before the 3 months expires.

If you keep a note of dates that you topo up you can keep track easy. The crucial thing is that within the first 60 days you use the phone AND top up at least once. When you do this you then enter a 300 day usage period. If you don't top up in the first 60 days the SIM card dies and you have to buy another. Some Turkcell conditions of us below. 60-Day Initial Period: Your Yeşil Kart comes with a 60-day initial use period. As soon as you make the first outbound call, you can receive incoming calls, make outgoing calls and benefit from services. If you load any units to your card within this period you then enter a 300-day regular usage period. If you do not load any units to your account within the 60-day initial period, your Yeşil Kart will be cancelled at the end of this period and cannot be re-used. cont'd

cont'd 90-Day Active Period: As soon as you top up your card within the 60-day initial period, you will automatically switch to the active period. As long as you have units on your card, you can make outgoing calls, receive incoming calls and benefit from services within this 90-day period. . Each time you top up your card, a new 90-day active period begins. If you run out of units within this 90-day period, and you do not top up your card, you will not be able to make any outgoing calls but you can receive them throughout the remaining time. 90-Day Passive Period: If you do not top up your card at the end of the 90-day active period, you cannot make any outgoing calls, only receive them, even if you have units on your card. The passive period is 90-day long. You must top up your card in order to switch back to active-period cont'd

cont'd 120 Day Final Period: If you do not top up your card at the end of the 90-day passive period, you cannot make or receive calls even if you have units on your card. If you do not top up your card during the 120-day final period, your Yeşil Kart will be cancelled at the end of the period and cannot be re-used. You can switch back to 90-day active period by topping up your card. To save keep having to remember the PIN number each time you switch on your phone, go into your phone security settings where you can disable the sim card PIN number. After you’ve made a call or sent a text you unit balance will flash up on your screen You buy additional top up ‘units’ (NOT MINUTES!) just like UK pay as you go. Available in the following amounts: 100 = 5 YTL, 200 = 10 YTL, 400 = 20 YTL, 800 = 40 YTL, 1200 = 60 YTL cont'd

cont'd For English menu dial: 6060 For card balance dial: *123# (save as a phonebook contact in your phone’s memory) To load top up units dial: *122* (then 13 digit top up number) # (then press call button) 1 unit of credit costs 5 Kurus (100 Kurus = 1 YTL) Call costs in sterling based on exchange rate of 2.30 YTL to the £ Calls to TRNC mobiles = 15p per min Text to TRNC mobiles = 3 units = 15 Kurus = 6.5p per text Calls to UK landlines approx 25p per min Calls to UK mobiles approx 90p per min Text to UK mobiles = 6 units = 30 Kurus = 13p per text Hope this helps.

millzer - what a very helpful post - I have actually printed all your information to try and get it into my brain! There is one thing I'm still unsure of - we added units onto our phone within the first month of getting it in February and topped up again in March and have lots of credit on. We are coming over for a couple of weeks end of June which should be ok, but after our next vist in September it may be more than 6 months till we are back again - does this mean we will lose the credit on the phone and have to buy a new sim card? Sorry to be so thick, this ageing process has a lot to answer for :( Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Jax47, Don't worry, as long as you topped up within the first 60 days you are okay as when you do your first top up you enter a 300 day usage period so you will be okay if you don't use it for 6 months. Each time you top up you enter a new 90 day 'active' period where you can make and recieve calls as long as you have credit on your SIM card. If you don't top up after the 90 days you then enter the 90 day 'passive' period where you can not make calls only recieve them EVEN if you still have credit on you SIM. If you still don't top up you then enter the 120 day 'final' period when you cannot make OR recieve calls. Once the 120 day final period expires if you still haven't topped up you SIM will die for good. At ANY time during the 300 day period a simple top up will restore you to the 90 day 'active' period where any credits you had will still be there. You do not LOSE the credits when in the passive or final periods, they are just suspended until you top up again.

Hi canyavuz, i think they know that hence why they are concerned about when they can next top up. Thanks for the tip about the pay monthly cards though, although not worth it for us as we are not over often enough....... YET. Cheers

For the last 6 years I've split my time between TRNC and UK. Sometimes turkcell can be reactivated with top up, sometimes not. When I came to UK this year I left phone with a friend to use. Problem solved I hope. This is an English phone that I had unlocked for Turkcell sim.

Billyboy, that's because the Turkcell SIM card also has a PIN number, as opposed to any PIN number that you set to lock your handset. When you get a Turkcell SIM card unless you go into the phone security settings and 'disable' the SIM PIN request it will ask you to enter the PIN each time you switch it on. Unless you can remember the SIM PIN you wont be able to use it. As I say, thats why its best to diasble the PIN SIM request so you don't have to remember it each time.
