Since moving to NC ,and I hasten to add that I came with such high expectations, I have been become bitterly dissappointed with at least half of the expats that we have met. Most of them seem as if they get great joy out of being spiteful or passing gossip that they do even know if it is true, and whats more making up what they do not know, when you turn around and tell them that you are not interested then you become the topic of conversation. I have never come across these kind of people before (perhaps I have led a sheltered life).

Am I the only one on the island that feels like this?

giggler - AJ beat me to it. No, I am sure a lot of people feel as you do. They do say that NC is like a village - everyone knows everyone else's business (or, more to the point, think they do).

Reference the above, everybody has made me feel a lot better, I was beginning to think it was just me but I will now do as most of you say, take it with a pinch of salt, or laugh at them, but most of all treat these people with the contempt that they deserve. Thanks everybody

British ex-pats tend to be the same the world over (not ALL of them of course !).

It's not just an NC thing.

Don't get drawn in to their small-minded Little Englander pettiness.

Leave them to their little enclaves and enjoy the life you sought.

Its the Raj syndrom people! They thought they had it, they think they deserve it, they know they are better and of course they are quite willing to let you know that you came here after them so you have a lot to learn.

Dress up in your best tog's, layer on the gold, remember to look people up and down with great disdain and of course talk behind your hand about anyone.

The Raj is dead, the others - just brain dead.

Give it your best and enjoy life - leave the Raj to their clubs and sets!!

I like it waddo. They're not all that type though, but I have met them

while working in Gulf region. Mostly due to ignorance and poor education.

For every one of those sort there are many more lovely people.

There are so many narrow minded people who beleive in turning people like thier neighbours into the police as they think thats thier duty. I wonder if their neighbours back in UK would have done the same to them. You do not beleive what efes and the sun does to these people. I have heard them going on about the benefits they can claim here whilst enting out their coucil house back inUK and collect the interest here. Then go to a bar and complain about the prices. You cant buy efes under 2.4 at the momewnt but charge them 3 tl they go balistic. Coupled with all the burgalries wall what can one say xxxxx

Fur coat and nae knicker brigade used to live in Morningside !!!(Edinburgh)

We both felt the same way and some of the forums didnt help either I felt at times if I put a funny comment in it would be ignored as they just carried on between a select few, obviously not one of the "in crowd" but hey ho who give a jot. What is it people say "what goes around comes around."

Or as my granny used to say "Theyll get their comuppence.".

( whatever that means)

Dear Giggler 123,cannot disagree with the constructive comments voiced on here. You could be living in Fleetwood or Blackpool ,not Cyprus - dont be distracted by the knockers - they frequent most places these days. Form your own judgements and treat everyone on their own merits - most on this site are ok,you'll be ok in the long run.Kind regards,Steve

Oh giggler,

what a shame you are having a bad experience with expats that you have met.

You said 'when you turn around and tell them that you are not interested then you become the topic of conversation', well surely if this is the case, just think that you must be interesting, or while they're talking about you, they're leaving some other poor person alone.

I, (lucky me), fortunately have met some lovely people here, Brits and TC's.

We worked darned hard to fulfill our dream, and I for one would not let some sad person, gossiping, ruin my life over here.

I hope you meet some nice people soon, they are here, honest.

Deecyprus,

I think it's sad that you find it amusing that someone is avoiding you, and has had to change their life over here to do just that.

If everyone, every day, could bring a smile to someones face, we'd have a smiling epidemic on the island............

Much better than all this backstabbing and gossiping malarky.

imho.... this island has changed my outlook on people. i have never met such a collective bunch of bitter, snide, back stabbing, two faced saddos in my life! and some of them i thought of as friends! it just goes to show, however well you think you know some one, you dont. they come over here thinking they are a big fish in a small pond , yet in the uk they would be treated as a joke. of maybe 500 - 1000 here that i have communicated with, i can now count possibly ten who i could call mates. however, it adds to my life experience the tales i am told, the self importance of low lifes, the bullshit and lying etc... im now at the point of listening to these idiots just to ensure i get a laugh as oppose to banging my head in relation to ptp, kibtec, deeds, stupid laws etc!!!

Relax, laugh at them, roll with it and above smile at every new dawn.

Yes there is quite a cross section of people on this small island so you can expect to meet them all at some time.

Just try and avoid having to mix with people you don't actually like, and if it means moving up to the Karpaz and living with a generator and a donkey, so be it lol

In the bank when we go there, we can overhear them moaning about everything under the sun, and it does make you wonder why they came.....After a year we still love the place despite the local protocol problems and its shortcomings, some of which you have to expect if you want to do "primitive"!

I have to say that these forums do often seem to have more than their fair share of complainants, which is why I try to spend as little time as possible on them !

best regards

Loved that Fur coat, and No Nickers,We had a landlady that would be over in our garden all the time, talking about everyone, even her so called friends, same old, same old, nasty gossip,

We didnt know these people, and sure as hell didnt want to listern to such C***p,even came in house while we were eating our Dinner, and the mouth was still a running, some people just never know when to stop, even when you ignore THEM,She was never too happy about the fact we said very little to her.

We were even told that she talked, she often went in our place, when we were out,so we began to leave little tell tail TRAPS,and it worked,She looked very Sheepish after that, laugh.we just had too, what a sick women, Spider,x

lili, i do agree with you , ex-pats are behaving funny outside their country, like the whole world belongs to them - the do not consider the locals as equal and don't try to mix or critisize the way the country is ruled - why don't they go back to theirs then, of course it is not a generality - i myself ,much say that except a few people in this forum i do not know any ex-pat in cyprus most of my friends are TC -

I have to agree with the comments on here. İ've never met such back-stabbing gossiping women in my life. İt makes me ashamed to be a women & English!

According to the NC gossipers, İ've had 3 different boyfriends in the last 2 weeks. İ wouldnt mind but İ'm sıngle!

What İ can't understand is the women that are the true offenders in the gossiping are more than old enough to know better! Why do they think other people's life's are any of their business!

The daft thing is. We never met anyone like some of the people here in UK. We always had really good neighbours, no-one ever gossiped about others. The only thing that used to go round like wildfire was someones house up for sale and how much it was. We don't go out a lot socialising as we can't afford to do that but it doesn't matter, we just love our life here. Some people talk about the "happy clappy board" (one of the other forums) but that forum is great for helping other people to do things or find things with no backbiting whatsoever. For the very few minority people here who have to keep stirring things, please, just smile and be happy.

Two people can damage a society: the one who knows and doesn't talk and the one who doesn't know and talks.

A lot of the trouble in the world would disappear if we were talking to each other instead of about each other.

Sounds like to me some people over there don't have enough to keep themselves occupied and spend the time gossiping and trouble making, they need to get a life. You only need to go to the Mayors do at Christmas to see the clique, it's like a fashion parade competing who can be best dressed, all over the top.

really good advice from everybody. I thought that I was the only one that was thinking these thoughts and I now find that quite a lot of us feel the same way. I find it very strange that when you meet someone and "butter wouldn't melt in her mouth" and you think what a very nice person is the one that is putting a knife in your back - they are like fairies.....

Newscoop. I was on holiday at Christmas and was taken to the Mayors do by some TC friends we have in Kyrenia. No way would I be part of the clique there after hearing them signing to the Mayor "he's a jolly good fellow" if he's such a good fellow why doesn't he get things done for the brits living there.

Also when we live in our native country we don't have quite so much to do with neighbours and such..we don't socialise all the time, here that all changes and we get to know other people quite quickly over the garden fence so to speak and across the way iykwim...and too many 'friends' can be like too many cooks

Yeah! Where there are three there'll soon be thirty three!!! I'm not in North yet but hope to be in summer again. Lilli, are you Guido's wife? Does your place get a little Irish gathering? Are you Irish or a supporter?

Must admit I have found it very difficult over here to meet genuine people. Prefer my own company most of the time.

I moved here to get away from the common scumbags in the UK. What a surprise!! A lot of them have turned up here in the TRNC. Sold the council house they bought for next to nothing in the 80's, got a bit of money in the bank now and think they are someone important!!!!!! Get a life..... Still think they are important and worth listening too..Why do they gossip?? Because their lives are so sad and dull and really they don't have one of their own so they try to get involved in everyone else's...

Shadders. I could not agree with you more on your ccomments.

Msg. 69. Should you not have said SOME and not THE common scumbags don't paint us all with the same brush as people you have had contact with.

ref 70, couldn't agree more. Reading these posts is like listening to the grumbles in every bar in the middle east. All muslim area that allows alcohol 360 days of the year but for 5 days they don't and that is just a travesty for some people

Mr Angry Msg 69

Whilst I agree with most of your post, Please dont label people who live in council houses as scum. Most people have lived in a council property sometime in the life, if you have never then you are ....hole lucky.

No I dont live in a council house.

Dear Maggie abolished "council houses". They are now run by Housing Associations.

New council houses are now proposed in the next Budget,

proger 1 - don't think so - you don't have to pay rent in Borstal

Yes, I was born and bred in a council house in the days when most council tenants were hard working, decent people

Being raised in a council house did me no harm, there are plenty of * better class* people with the morals of an alley cat. Beauty is only skin deep, but ugliness goes through to the bone.

Well said, as usual, Hattikins. It didn't do me any harm, either. I think I (and millions of others) benefitted greatly from a decent education - a state Grammar school - you know, the ones that various governments over the years have done their best to abolish.

OK Hatti, I won't. I know how you feel because it's like a red rag to a bull to me. Fortunately, when we still lived in SE London/Kent, the selective system was (is) still in place and our son attended a very good Grammar school.

Hope you have a good night's sleep!!

The thing is, people who gossip are usually the ones with the saddest lives, they are unhappy with their lot and are usually under achievers, they tell lies to inflate their own egos..and most of what they do and say is borne out of jealousy.

There's a lot of talk about the types of houses everyone was born / grew up in but stop for one minute and think about the people all over the world who never lived in a house (council or otherwise) and will be lucky to see tomorrow. Such people don't talk about other people's lives because they're too busy living hand to mouth. I wish we could donate a good old British pound for every post on this forum; THAT would be something worth talking about!

Phew! Where did that come from? Right, time to get off me soap box.

some people spend so much time being interested in what other people are doing in their lives, that they lose sight of what they themselves should be doing with their own life! sad really. Me? i dont give 2 hoots what others think unless their family or "close friends". Rest are fair weather friends or associates! I remember reading a little booklet called "skill with people"years ago and on the first page in bold writing it said - remember-most people are 10'000 times more interested in themselves than they are in you! how true!

The Brits here are no different to at home -- some good some bad. Most of the people we have met here have been wonderful - TCs, Turks and Brits alike. Of course there are the atypical expat cliques like there are everywhere abroad. Just avoid them - there are plenty of great people here. Enjoy yourselves!
