Overflow flow pools look nice but use much more water, if I was getting one now I would not go for overflow.

Hi goofyfunk, We just went through this ourselves a couple of months ago and decided on a skimmer pool for a couple of reasons. We have experienced both pools over the last 6 years of living here and find that the skimmers are great for providing washing facilities and drink to the local birds, in particular in our area - pigeons, and the s..t all around and in the pool. We also got a lot of stray dogs and cats using it. Our neighbours have this problem but the birds cannot reach the water level in a skimmer! On a visit to cyprus pools we were surprised that one of the owners said he would always recommend a skimmer rather than an overflow for HOMES for the same conclusions that we had come to and that was without any prompting from ourselves. Cyprus pools also said that skimmers were cheaper to build though we didn't use them as our builder did ours. Overflow pools do use more water but as stated above, they do look more attractive

Overflow pools are visually and audibly "more appealing" than skimmer pools. Overflow pools are more expensive to build and to run and lose more water to evaporation than skimmer pools. We have just completed a 23m x 3m (don't ask) lap pool with a disappearing/infinity edge at the end overlooking the sea. This combines some of the features of both skimmers/overflow pools and reduces some of the drawbacks of both types.

Skimmer pools , water flows towards skimmers and drags debris with it. The water level is usually about 100mm from top of pool. Overfow pools have no skimmers, but a gulley surrounding pool, pool is continually filled such that water overflows and debris flows to edges and gulleys. Hope that explains difference. regards p

Yeh, go for a nice overflow fron Cyprus Pools with a few non-optional extras like major leaks and cracked balance tank.

Infinity pools tend to be a compromise between overflow and skimmer pools, combining some of the benefits with fewer of the drawbacks of either. Steel was $750/tonne last year. It went up to $1800/tonne over the autumn/winter. It is now back down to about what it was.

I would advise you to wait. The cost of running a pool is very high. Friends have drained theirs to save on the cost of electricity alone without the cost of topping it up and chemicals. They no longer have the stress of keeping it clean especially after a sand storm. Other rumour was that there may be a £1000 a year pool tax. That was under the old government so could be a non runner although who are easy targets for a government needing money?

rtddci Yep makes a lot of sense to have a pool without water. My recommendation would be to fill it with concrete to within 1 meter from the surface and fill the rest with soil. Then of course plant flowers/fruit trees etc. Far more enjoyable. AJ
