You don't say whether you have been here before, if so how did you feel about the place, how old are your children and most important do you need to work to survive. It all depends on personal circumstances, it's great for some people, others hate it and some want desperately to get out. If it's just a matter of getting away from the UK I'm sure there are less complicated places to consider moving to.

Hi Jendiab

Come for a holiday, have a look around, check out school, jobs, accommodation.

Then go home and try and work out what was the cause of this insane episode in your life.

Have a nice lie down and you'll feel right as rain!

Not really a place to bring school age children unless you can offord private education, or teenagers seeking a career unless going to university.

not very positive messages from the British expats! Ligthen up a little.....you live here, so you must love it more than you hate it!

Positives are: Weather, property prices, lifestyle, low crime, good option of schools (GAU etc)

negatives: employment is hard to find, not as developed as the UK (although it's not that much of a problem), interest rates given on Turkish Lira etc.....

Hi jendiab,

There are some things to consider before moving to the TRNC. First do you need to work to feed your family? If the answer is yes, and you are not setting up in business then it will be extremely difficult for you.

First you need a work permit, second wages here are very low. If your children are still at school, most british kids go to private schools here but some manage at the local village schools.

Thiings seem to take forever here to get sorted, so if you have a short fuse, don't even think of coming. These are the negatives. The positives are beautiful weather for 9 months of the year. Lovely local people

Cheap houses, cheaper council tax, and as long as you don't go out every night cheaper cost of living.

Children seem happier here, there is a low crime rate and it is safer for them. You will get a much better interest on your money in the bank here. Come for a holiday, rent a house for a while.

houses are only cheap if you buy the exchange/pre gc properties. (could affect your uk assets)

private school fees are cheap, but don't be fooled that the education is the same as your kids would recieve at a private school in the uk.

the crime rate use to be low but crime is on the increase.

health care is crap and you will have to pay for it!

beaches are crap and filthy.

everything is politically motivated.

animal cruelty is a big problem here.

you cannot trust anyone here.

the sun shines most of the year.

some of the tc and gc people are lovely.

good food.

cheap booze and fags (if thats your thing)

pretty much drug free, which is good news for kids.

a lot depends on which area you intend living in and who your friends are.

just remember having a holiday or holiday home here is totally different from actually living here.

Jendiab, My wife and I were thinking the same thoughts, just spent a week in beautiful NC, already got a villa rented bank accounts set up and half way through the schooling process for our daughter.

Reasons:

Beautiful country

Safe environment

Friendliest people I have ever met, expat and local

Easy going place

I could go on but needless to say, within 1 week my wife and I decided that it is near perfect for us to move to from Dubai.

Many thanks to those forum members I met as well as those who advised us from the forum.

Special thanks to Grumpy Grouse and wife, Jock1 and Wife, Gary the Quiz master, Tommy the returner and The Saints and several others but my typing fingers are waring out.

Hope to see you all again in a month.

There's no place like home and we tend to exist in a defined circle. Remember all the times you left this rigid sanctum and how did it make you feel.

I hope you find your escapismn and should you decide on this part of the island, you may also find it to be quite a special place with its own dimension to explore and enjoy.

For me it really is easy, the TRNC is now my home country. I have traveled and lived to/in many countries around the world but my heart is in the TRNC. I now will live and die here.

Maintenance Tech? Electrical or Mechanical? Who would want to be an OIM? having to balance safety with production must cause many to retire early.

Sorry Tommy, different guy. I almost set up a local number to give you a call but got tied up with a dozen other things. I will be back end of June and will get a local number then, will give you a call so we can meet up. Tommy the returner is a guy who has been coming to Kyrenia for vacation for about 20 years or so, gave me a couple of good shares tips and some great company at the Grumpy Grouse.

Several answers in one attempt, seems like there is quite a lot of oil field trash around the forum. Turbine tech (Its a Danish thing but I am probably taking over as Maintenance group Assistant supervisor on a new platform) My Chopper is taking me away from home in another 4 days, sad as I can be !!!!

The OIM's with my lot don't retire, they just find a way to attach them to the platform as a new extension, all for prosperity I think

Lilli, I think that depends on what you expect, If you spend 7 years dealing with middle east systems you will find that NC is a nice easy going pace and very relaxing.

Didn't get round to visiting you guys on this trip but will make a point of it on the next.

Ask yourself what have you got to loose. If you come up with a long list, then it's not worth the risk, at least until your children are older.

You don't say if you have been here, or how many times; we came for a recce, and just knew it was the right place for us, it felt comfortable, we felt at home. If you are moving because you want to, rather than you have to, and you have 'that' feeling, and...............a back-up plan (or money behind you) if something goes wrong, then you have the makings of a good move.

If you asked people on forums like this in France, Spain, USA etc etc, you would have the same responses -apart from the property issue. There's good and bad everywhere, as Lilli says, you decide your own destiny.

SD&P at this time, im production with driller alongside. Two wells one work over the first of which is high pressure and temperature. A programme in the field till 2013 and the new beast the Jasmine starting at the end of the year. New dimensions and technologies which is keeping us on our toes. Should see me through to my retirement in the sun and my as well, im sure.

Thanx for the explanation Lilli, sorry I misunderstood. 2 of the guys I work with have just moved to NC as well, 1 of which I new about and the other was out of the blue. We have managed to situate in Dogankoy, Ozankoy and Catalkoy. You are correct about the multi culture thing though. Don't think I could spell Ajerbythingy either. Alan and his wife were brilliant for getting advice, listened to most of it but got a little drunk on occasion and forgot the rest but it seems to have worked out in the end.

Looking forward to meeting you in the future.

2 and 3 as of last year so quite a difference after all these years. North and South Sea, Turkey, Quatar, Egypt, Trinidad, Ivory Cost and Ireland although i first started off C.E.G.B in South Wales. Not a bad power station on the island with a few decent upgrades having been completed in the last couple of years. In our game who knows where you will rest the boots.

I have lived and worked in quite a few different countries and my experience is this:

1. If you have done your homework you will have a good idea of what to expect and some method to deal with the anticipated problems (challenges) as they come up!

2. If you meet good people - your impression of a country will be positive. If you have had a bad experience your perspective will be somewhat less positive. In general there are good and bad people everywhere. The trick is to treat people as you would like to be treated (hopefully well) and then good people tend to gravitate towards you.

3. Don't burn your bridges. If you are seriously looking to emigrate make sure you have a back-up plan and a way out should the worse happen. The worse isn't always something you can plan for!

4. Enjoy the process, the journey is as important as the destination! Every problem (challenge) is an opportunity to find a positive solution!

Hope this helps!
