| Come on guys, UKmark sounds like he is a young chap coming here on his own and is on a tight budget. Mark the cost of water varies and depends where you are renting and if you have mains water or whether you have to have it tankered in. So find this out first and then come back and ask. Electricity is expensive in the TRNC so try and avoid putting on Air Conditioning units as much as possible. Close all windows and doors and put on the A/C for 30 minutes before going to bed. This will cool the room down and you will be able to sleep. If you have an electric water heater just put it on for 30mins on economy. In the lounge just open doors and windows and create a through draught, or better still, sit outside under shade. I can say I pay about £10.00 - £15 per week for electric but I am careful. | Electricity prices Unit prices per 30 day month. These bands will vary in a longer or shorter month between meter readings. 1st 250 units in a month 0.30 kurus per unit Next 250 " " " " 0.35 " " " next 250 " " " " 0.38 " " " over 750 " " " " ? " " " Fortunately since the last alteration to the tariff in December 2008, I have not used in excess of 750 units per month. I'd estimate that any units used over 750 per month will be priced at about 0.48 kurus, based on earlier tariffs. Standing charge is 0.337941 kurus per day. Again the total charge will vary depending on the number of days in a billing month. Water bills vary from municipality to municipality, so I cannot supply actual costs in general terms. |

Correction. I've realised an error in the above. Each unit is 0.30 TL etc. i.e 30 kurus per unit. Cheapest unit price approx. 13p at exchange rate 2.35/£1 Dearest unit price approx 20.5p Hope this helps

We pay (in Girne) 27 ytl a month for 20 tons of mains water, whether you use it or not. You can arrange with the water company to cut you off when you are not there but will take 2-3 days to get reconnected. You cannot be cut off for none payment but will be fined if not paid for (another thing to check when buying/renting a property that you could be saddled with years of non payment of all utility bills). In certain parts of NC, the locals have refused to pay for water for years. We budget 25ytl a month for electric when not there. You can be cut off for non payment, Kibtek comes & takes your fuse out hence they are a target for thieves. (We take ours out when not there). We put a lot of credit on the accounts to prevent either being cut off or fined. Be careful with bank SO's for utilities, if they fail to pay, you will start racking up the bills.

rtddci, Thank you that answers my question nicely as I was thinking about how to pay the standing charge and what it would be.

Alsancak council charges around 5TL per tonnne of water. Pretty cheap compared to the UK. Just like bottled water. 4TL for 19 literes, whereas UK prices are £8.00 from POWOW, for the same amount.

rtddci - please advise whether you have had any problems paying in advance for water? We got the keys to our house in March. The previous owner hadnt paid for 2 months so we went to the local muhtars office to pay their outstanding bill. At the same time we paid another 100tl to cover our bills till we are back out again in a couple of months. The lady looking after our house reported we had received a water bill a couple of weeks ago, showing no credit and when she queried it she was told we had not paid anything in advance. We rang the office from here in UK and even though we had had a long conversation at the time with this person about how much to leave etc we were told that there was no record of us paying on the system or any record of the office being 100tl in credit on that day. We stupidly only got a receipt for the previous owners arrears as we were told our credit had been inputted onto the computer! Thought I was too old/wise to be conned like this!
