We have just found out that my husband has a high intolerance to gluten. We've also discovered that most pulses that we can buy here in the UK contains glueten because of the manufacturing process. Can anyone tell me whether the pulses obtained in the TRNC are gluten free. If anyone living in the TRNC is on a gluten free diet, any other information you can give me will be most helpful.

Thanks.

Hi

The dried pulses (lentils etc) are gluten free as far as I am aware. Obviously you will have to make sure you don't pick up a packet of bulghur wheat mistaking it for rice! The rice is gluten free as far as I am aware. They do cornflour/potato flour here to use for thickening. The only gluten free stock cubes available are Kallo which we have only found in the organic Kup wine shop opposite the big school in Girne. You can get chick pea flour here also to make bread (but it's not that nice!) If he's diagnosed as cealiac he will need to follow the diet strictly. I have bought gluten free muesli from Supreme before but it is quite expensive. You will need to be careful about reading the packets to make sure as wheat and gluten are in a lot of products you wouldn't even think of (but obviously a bit hard in Turkish!) Think positive and don't let it affect your life ie you will have to cut out biscuits and cakes but they aren't good for you anyway! No beer but wine and cider are OK (although not in the same glass!). You can buy a food directory from the cealiac society that will list all the foods that you can have, some of them are well known brands which are available here. If you need any more info please feel free to contact me.

Hi kibrissibel

I can't thank you enough for all the very useful info you've given us - we're off to NCF on 20 March for good. Luckily for us, I've never bought pre-pared meals and mostly cook natural. Thank you again

kindest regards

Moira
