We were unfortunate victims of this spate of burglaries a few weeks ago whilst on holiday. Ours is a CaSa house on the sea side. We had also been burgled last October - the culprit was caught and is now in Nicosia jail. It was our former pool cleaner (Ibrahim).

This time, we had gone out for a meal and were away from the house less than 2 hours. They took the safe, which was bolted to the wall and contained all the money we had taken out with us to pay our bills. They also took a Sony camcorder, but didn't take the charger. It's not clear how they got in. After our last burglary we always make sure all doors and windows are locked before we go anywhere. The bedroom patio door was open when we returned and the lounge window had been damaged but not opened.

Lapta police were very good. Wouldn't want anyone else to go through this - it's distressing and erodes your

trust and confidence in people and the place.

This seems to be an ever growing problem, which is so sad - it used to be so safe ane carefree. We had similar problems over in Ozankoy - fortunately we have had window locks fitted (the central pins) and it stopped them. They also tried four other villas by us - but did not succeed. Clearly the problem is spiralling now. It is also clear that they are targetting villas where they think tourists are staying with cash, cameras etc - ie. easy pickings.

One thing may be worth raising with the authorities (maybe the owners of the board can do this) - the RED number plates make it very obvious a visitor is staying. If you remember a few years back, tourist number plates in Florida were being targetted (and I think in Italy). The authorities - who were concerned for the area's tourism - changed the law and got rid of the number plate distinction - something for TRNC to consider ??

And apologies - I should also express my sympathies with Nick - it is really horrible for you.

Hi Perry that is such a good idea. Then they will know if your a tourist or villa owner part time. Then if they change that they will get you another way speeding on your mobile etc. They fleece you as much as these idiots who steel from your home. Its all thier way now sadly

Medjoul. Did the guy Ibrahim work for a pool company and how long ago did he clean your pool.

It would be nice to know who to avoid. Trouble is you get to trust a lot of people because they seem on the face of it to be really nice people.

We were burgaled in Bellapais several years ago, it ruined my wife and daughters holiday. They could not relax (we were in bed when we woke to find someone in our room). But I would also say that we have been burgled here in the UK several times. There are good and bad everywhere. This certainly hasnt stopped us holidaying in North Cyprus, we love the place. You just have to be more carefull.

Yes, Loulou, you were spot on about Ibrahim. He used to clean our pool with another character employed by the developers. Thanks, Perry - what you said about the red number plates is interesting. Are the police aware of it?

We were also victims of Ibrahim the pool man.... He seemed to friendly, always stopped to say hello!! He burgled both our Karsiyaka property and the property next door, came in via the patio door. He was brought over to the villa when arrested to tell the police what he had taken and from where. Such a shame when you trust these people.
