Now that the hooha about this service has died down and having been a subscriber since October 2008 I feel qualified to say that..........at first it was wonderful .....but now.....if you just wanna surf the web it's fine.....but if you wanna download........oooh 'eck ! Forget it matey....if you ask them they will say not to download any large files.....you ask them what they consider to be a large file and they can't (or wont) tell you.

Last night I downloaded a total of 500 mbs (not excessive) and it loaded quite quickly, shutdown and went to bed , this morning the system has capped me , download speed is 18kbs a sec max , so much for an UNLIMITED service !!

If anyone from turkcell sees this post and wants to converse on the matter I'd bee more than happy to oblige.

As far as I'm concerned they can shove their 3G where the sun don't shine (oh no thats England! ) lol

(just done a speedtest : dl =140kbs ul= 20kbs)

Steve.

steve,

Stop complaining, 3G gives you mobility and that's what its all about. If you wish to download large files you must subscribe to ADSL. The structure of 3G is such that you share a fixed resource with people using the same base station. In my area which is near the university it would have been foolish if I had subscribed to 3G with so many students around all downloading films and music. So it is a service but must be used wisely.

I have noticed that over this weekend the speed has slowed down to make it virtually unusable. Even just surfing is too slow and sometimes it can't even connect. I don't know if it is a global thing now with turkcell as more people are using it, or if its specific to my account? Has anyone else had similar problems recently?

I have noticed I can't use Skype anymore as the speed is so slow. Is anyone else having this problem? I mentioned the speed problems to Turkcell yesterday and they said to bring the modem in for testing.

Ismet,

Not complaining my friend just stating facts , I don't need to be informed about what 3G is about...but thank you for you input.

By the way I was (and still am ) on ADSL and the company concerned will allow me NO downloads .

Got to agree with Steve. The last couple of months it has got slower and slower, especially in the evenings. Obviously they haven't increased the bandwidth to keep up with the influx of customers. My e-mail enquiring as to the speed problem was ignored. I will be giving them a couple of months to see if things improve and then...... back to the drawing board!

has anyone had a problem in the last few days where it is so slow that it virtually doesn't work at all? I can understand if you download a lot it may cause problems, but it should at least be able to connect!

Quite simple really.....the more people using it...the slower it gets ( even in the uk with topspeed Broadband! )

If you use it during peak times ie eveings and weekends...and monday mornings, very noticable.

Suggest you download when you are going to bed ( get it to automatically close upon completion )

Best time for downloading is at 6am

Time for me tupence worth. Been using 3G (Turkcell) since Dec and although in a very poor signal area - Ozankoy close to Star Bowling) I have no real problems with it but then I do not spend my life on the Net so it fullfils my needs.

I have no landline and no sign of one ever being put in here either so I have the choice between on/off wireless providers or 3G.

To get a signal (UMTS) I have put my dongle on the top of the roof at the end of a 16 mtr long USB cable - don't let anyone try to tell you that the max useable length is 5 mtrs by the way!

Signal strength and speed means that Skype is just not an option but emails and banking work well and I only download one large file a month to update my virus software.

I think everyone should bin out of 3G Turkcell as fast as possible so I can have more speed - lol.

Has anyone tried TelSim 3G yet by the way?

The wireless router from the UK failed as well so I sit on a single PC for now.

I have a landline and have used super on line all the time. , but it is quite slow. Had been thinking of changing to 3G just for the increase of speed, but after reading all your comments, not sure if it worth the extra money.

Again, we have 3G which started of great at first but is so slow now that I can rarely ring my family in the UK using Skype, I struggle to get onto my gmail account and weekends and evenings are a total loss for the internet.

I repeatedly ring Turkcell but they just tell me that there is many people on line at the moment. I can only suggest that you all badger Turkcell and (hopefully) one day they will sort it out but if we don't keep contacting them then they will never know.

I may follow Waddo's idea but will send my husband on the roof!!

The Cyprus greedy commercialism curse strikes yet again me thinks. Instead of investing the profits being made into improving the service i.,e. bandwidth and thus get more profit, praise & customers, they grab as much as they can for as long as they can for as little as they can. Then they wonder why their profits plummet as they lose customers.

Steve,

When you say that Turkcell will "Cap" you, do you mean that they will prevent you from utilising the full extent of your download capability? I use the 4GB monthly packet so have not had chance to download films at this time but if you are on the unlimited packet then you should be able to.

Interested to know if your speed (down/uploads) are as good or better/worse than Turkcell when you are on TelSim.

It's been working fine for me. It is slow, but I knew that it would be the case, but has managed to download a couple of gigabytes worth of music in about 24 hours. All albums I used to have before coming out here, but just couldn't fit on the container. It's flexible, both in payment terms and portability, but as with most things in life, and in North Cyprus, it ain't perfect.

As of early last week, KKTCELL has changed is capping policy with regard to their "unlimited" monthly package. Previously, there was a data cap of 5.5GB per day. Going over that would reduce the download rate to 0.5 megabits per second. Calling and having the limit lifted could be done once per package.

They have now introduced a dynamic usage analysis and capping tool, which will cap depending on any one, or a combination of: download speed, data, network usage and a few other variables.

The upshot is that one can be capped for almost anything - I kid you not. It's not based upon the amount of data any more. A number of people have contacted me, and after one persons usage they were capped after downloading 700MBytes of data in a 24 hour period - I checked this out.

The download cap reduces speed to 0.15 megabits per second. A second violation will cap you for the remainder of the package duration.

Complaints can be sent to musteri.hizmetleri@kktcell.com

The honeymoon period is over! Get used to it.

There are only two ISP's plus ADSL that have any bandwidth

The demand for broadband Internet access is growing rapidly throughout Northern Cyprus. sunnycyprus.net's Wireless Internet Services are available for either Home or Business/Corporate use, within our coverage area that currently represents over 95% of the area between Esentepe and Kayalar.

sunnycyprus.net's broadband solutions offer demanding customers broadband speeds where before no other options existed. Our wireless access service uses radio frequency (RF) to transmit and receive data. See our FAQs section for more information on how this technology works

Please call today and we will send a team of technicians to your location at no charge, to determine your signal strength and custom installation needs. Whether and indoor or outdoor antenna is needed, you will find it non-intrusive, and it can be installed easily. At the end of the installation you are provided with an RJ-45 connector which is literally "plug and play" for all computers.

When you call at a 3G top up shop and ask ,can i have a top up voucher for 3G.

The person ask you, would that be unlimited you want? 70 TL please he says.

of course people will complain if they are paying 70TL and get 10TL service.

3G is not just about mobility.

Can anyone tell me how the 'pay as you go' package works?

As far as I know its 149 TL for the dongle and 60 tl for a months usage but are there any other things to be aware of i.e. does the months usage have to be continuous or can it be split?

Also, is there an expiry date for trop ups like there is with Turkcell SIM cards? What i'm meaning is if I pay 60 TL for a month but then don't return for a year can I just top up again or does this render the whole thing useless and I have to start all over again.

I dont think so because we used our friends one which he hadnt used in ages. We just took it to a turkcell shop, they fiddled about on the computer for a while and put money on it. Once you have the actual 3G thing, you can top it up whenever you please. It doesnt expire, only the credit does after the month.

Think thats what your question meant, if not then sorry!!

When 3G first came out I bought 12 months unlimited download ( 70 TL per month) and got the Dongle for free. Only real problem is in Kyrenia Area where connections can be horrible. Karpaz is great and I downloaded 4 movies overnight!!!!! Turkcell's popularity is also their downfall.

Vodaphone 3G was mentioned. Is that a real alternative? Is it faster and more reliable than Turkcell? I assume I'd have to buy a new dongle?

Am I asking to much.

I want to communicate on a regular basis with family on webcam ie most days, surf for info on the net, listen to radio 2 daily, and watch itv player & bbc iplayer now and again, and perhaps download films occasionally

Is that feasable if yes who do I go to and what would it cost,

Help must be in simple words as am complete novice when it comes to this sort of thing.
