I am looking to buy a 50cc scooter for whenever I am over TRNC (hopefully in the long term this will reduce the cost of car hire).

Could anyone on the forum give advice as to the best place to purchase a scooter and what insurance and tax if any is required

There is an insurance broker in Lapta who is helpful, Steve I think his name is (someone will give you his name/phone number or you could go back through the messages as recently there was a thread on insurance). Also there is an insurance shop in Girne High Street just down the hill next door to the paper shop on the left hand side.

A silly question about to be asked ....... do you need a driving licence?

My UK licence covered me for riding my 'wee vespa' and vans but I note that my TRNC licence only covers me for cars.

Do you reapply for a change on your licence or do you have to sit a test etc to be legally on the road?

Hi if you want a new scooter or used I have a selection of 50cc,80cc and 125cc prices start at £700 for brand new 50cc includes all tax's registration into your name only extra to pay is insurance about 135tl for third party .12 months warranty on all new scooters and I can pick up for servicing as I live in Lapta and work in Bogazkoy between Girne and Lefkosa used 50cc from £450. If you are on a UK licence and yuo passed your test before June 2000 you will have automatic entitlement for riding a 50cc scooter as far as I know you would have to have motorcycle entitle ment on your UK licence to get the same on a TRNC licence ,but the test is no big deal as I have a young lady of 67 who just flew through her test and she had never ridden a scooter prior to coming to Cyprus she could now technically ride my 1100cc pan european if her legs were longer give me ring if your interested Phil on 05338711176 or 05428551176

Scootex,

I can ride a motorcycle on my UK licence, as I can with vans up to a certain size, but when I applied for my TRNC a number of years ago, they only put cars on it as the norm. If I take both my licences in now will they change my TRNC licence?

Hi Scoobydoo, Rigsby and Jay 76 .

Scoobydoo if you had a full UK motorcycle(cat A) licence you should of changed it for a TRNC licence which are DHI J I presume the D is for car licence the rest of the letters mean you have motorcycle entitlement > I double checked this as when my young friend passed her test she got HI J on her licence which means she could drive a motorcycle of any size (god forbid ) and when I saw it I thought they had made a cock up with mine and only given me moped entitlement but apparently she got the lot ,just hope she's not thinking of buying a fireblade or something.

Rigsby you could be right but most likely some body has just got hold of the wrong end of the stick if your licence stated cat A you should of got motorcycle entitlment mine was done in November last 2009.

Jay76 Sorry we are not allowed to hire unless I take on a TC partner and about 5 ton of paperwork

you could always buy one off me and sell it back when you are finished continued next pag
