I notice on my last visit in April, there are not so many Brit cars anymore. I presume this is because so many had not paid duty/taxes owed.

How come? Is it because customs have taken all the cars that have not had the duty paid on them? Mind you the duties were rather high, considering what you pay back in the UK for road tax.

How old is your car? As I take it, it is not necessarily the age of the car, it is if you have paid up-to-date all the duty owed on the car. It just seems that so many have lost their cars, old & new.

I wonder why the decrease.........................

3 years old but its on glasses guide, price 28% of that plus so much per cc, depends on the size of the engine.they only lose them if they dont pay the duty, or its been here for more than a year.

Is there there an age restriction on the car and or residency stipulation tied in with car age ?

If you have residency as opposed to just visiting for long periods do the terms vary

Who do you speak to so that you are sure that you are not bringing over a car that won't be allowed to stay

I've two possible cars that I could choose from both low mileage and mine from new a Sept 2003 20k miles and Jan 2006 41k miles.

$12000 for cc = £8000

£10000 glasses guide price at 2.8 =£2800

so i make it £10800

most 3 litre cars are 2999cc so it comes under 3000cc which is 4.2$, rather than 5.2$, lower cc cars do the best, but you have to work out what a 3 litre car whatever the make is going to cost you here.

Catalkoykid great TRNC website thanks for your helpit looks as if the cars are too old unless I become a full time resident see copy of web page

" MotorVehicles

For cars imported to the TRNC there is a three years age limitation with the exception of:-

Persons of Cypriot origin and over the age of 18 who have been away from the country for ten years or more and proves that they have re-migrated for permanent residence (university and college graduations are not taken into consideration. For further details, please read the Foreign Trade (Regulatory and Inspection) Law.

Persons of Non-Cypriot origin and over the age of 18 who have migrated for permanent residence is required to prove with official documents"

ntation their income is totally coming from abroad and they have no connection with government duty. For further details, please read the Foreign Trade (Regulatory and Inspection) Law"

This does make your head hurt!!

We intend bringing our car and paying the correct duties etc however at the moment we will not be there permanantly - are we likely to have problems, we have had the car from new and it will be just about exactly 3 years old when we arrive.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that you have to knock off all your ins and outs over the last year from the duty free year so if you have say spent 4 months in total in TRNC over the last year then you have 8 months duty free time for your car - does anyone know if this is correct.

Do you have to actually pay in us dollars or will they accept sterling or lira.

Even though you have this duty free period can you go and pay the duty that is due immediately?

You have been absolutely marvalous with your help very much appreciated.I owe you an Efes

The attraction of bringing your UK car out is that you know it perhaps from new and you do not have to sell in the UK and buy here

My one that's under 5 years old is a2.2 diesel (are they still charging extra for diesel) so the tax would be as much as the UK value

Could you buy and under 3 year old car in the UK register it in your name and bring it out

If and you can buy a 2007 1.25 Fiesta for £5000 in the UK you would be charged $2525 for the engine which at a rough 1.50 to the £ costs £1683 plus your 28% at Glasses Guide price @£5000 would be £1400 making the cost of the car £8083

So if you get one here for less its not worth the drive from the UK are my figures right?

If you buy a new car in the UK for export can you claim the VAT back?

Hatty Vat on used cars is on the profit margin and as such not included in the invoice

Individuals cannot reclaim vat

I think you can only get the vat back on new cars if they are exported outside the EU and you pay the tax on entry to the new country

UK VAT on new cars is exempt under the personal export scheme. You must leave the UK(EU) within 6 months of date of purchase. In this instance HMC&R consider TRNC to be outside EU.

steamer,

take a seat on that, we brought our ranger in 4 years ago, the tax bill was huge!

i guess its a 2009 with not many miles on the clock? be worried!!

we had the original purchase invoice from ford and they didn't care about that when they came to a valuation.

also do you know where your ranger was made??

usually romania but some were also made in thailand, it will make a big difference.

ford told us ours was a romainia car but trnc customs didn't agree, they went for the thailand version hence big tax money.

we claimed the vat back on our car, if you are purchasing the car for export tell the dealership so they can get the correct paperwork and it can be done. unless they have changed the rules in the uk recently.

Hi,now im really worried but i have two saving graces..i also claimed the vat back and also managed to buy it for 11k new but i guess as you say they will go on glass;s guide price not how much i payed..it has cost me 1k to get it here so i reckon if i get away with less than 10k duty it will still be a reasonable priced truck owing 22k plus registration£1000?...cangar quoted 32k euro for a lower model so if anyone wants a cheap..ish truck with wicked 22 inch alloys let me know..thanks for the advise and i will let you know what the dredded was on monday

Steamer you won't know the actual amount payable until the vehicle is cleared through customs on the day and all the paperwork is processed. I would advise you to go early because it takes ages (or did in our case) and the paperwork has to be stamped and checked through various departments. Also don't forget that they close for a couple of hours for lunch and the afternoon session is quite short. When ours eventually got to the final hurdle where the money side of things is sorted out, the guys were ensconced in the office for over an hour and then someone came out with the amount scribbled on a piece of paper and said is this OK? By the that time the payment office was about to close and we couldn't face coming back the next day. You have to pay in cash in Turkish Lira.

Have you sorted out a company to do the customs clearance for you?

Hi Catalkoykid

I have a 1985 Mercedes Benz 280 SL Roadster, it is currently registered in Dubai and it will be 25 years old in January of next year.

It is an original manufactured German export, not USA, and is left hand drive.

I have made previous enquiries and have been informed I should be able to import it as a “Classic Car” through the TRNC Classic Car Club and will do that when I am able to do so.

My quenstion is:

Would the same standard conditions of import duty charges apply for my Merc or do they differ for classic vehicles?

Thanks for your information on this post, it’s very enlightening.

I have bought a 2001 grand voyager2.5 diesel and the original idea was to drive it down through one of the usual routes with some personal family things in ie pictures, clothing, ect. whilst my wife and two kids fly over.

We are renting a house with the intention of applying for residency. After reading of the nightmares (and speaking to some who have done it) I changed my mind. One possibilty I was considering was importing the car into limissol on the gramaldi ro ro service, which is quite cheap ( about £400 including paperwork and customs clearence) and then driving it north into trnc. Can anyone tell me if this is possible ?, or is it worth it, considering the problems. As my wife and kids are flying out next wednesday and I am sat here looking at this car, I have to make a descision today , do I go ahead with the idea? or do I re-sell the car and ship the 20 or so boxs (and how?) and buy a car when actually there. PLEASE HELP!!!!! thanks

Re Message 39

Hi cavlryman998

Thanks for your input. I have contacted Sindelfingen Mercedes who supplied me with the information on manufactured dates etc for my SL 280, but they could not supply details of new purchase value as they said it was the dealer’s requirement, which was different in various areas and countries.

I understand that the Classic Car Club needs to provide a certificate of Antiquity which can include a valuation for import duty purposes.

I am also led to believe that a left hand drive Classic vehicle, provided it meets current requirements, may have permission granted to be imported.

What insurance do you have for your SL 500 and what is the cost on average?

My email address is:

smiffies@eim.ae

Drop me a line and maybe we can meet up for a bevy, when we are next over there, to discuss the Mercs.

Regards

Hi Smiffies, do contact Tamer Konat at the Classic Car Club because he will prepare all the paperwork for you and sort out the import licence. He will also be able to advise you about getting the original valuation. You will need to join the Club in order to import the vehicle but it is not expensive and you will then be invited to all the days out, rallies, etc. He speaks perfect English so no hassle at all.

I have already been in touch with the Classic Car Club and they will help with all the details for importing my SL 280 when it is 25 years old in January 2010. unfortunately I have to wait till then.

Pregunta?

What if the car isn't from UK so hasn't got a Glasses Guide rating?

EG from UAE where fro example at the moment you could by a 2008 Pejero / Edge / similar sozed 4x4 for 30% less than in UK.

How would they value that?

But you know YOU MUST BE HONEST when giving that value of your lovely car verbally!

MMMMMM intetresting when in most ports they'd want to see a copy of the invoice or they value it.

the invoice wont show the todays value if its almost 3 years old or however old it is .

How can they value it if not in glasses guide, they are customs men not car dealers.

what i told you about was from experience from some 1 with a car not in glasses guide.

if you are not the only name on the log book, dont bother bringing the 19 years old porsche,as you cant keep it here, but if you have owned the car from new,you can bring it and pay duty on it .

Hi, I am hoping to move out next year and will bring my car - Peugot 206cc 1.6 may 2005 - 13,000 miles - book price is in the region of £7000 - £8000 I think. Car will be taxed etc for a year so will be 6 years old when duty becomes due. Can you give me an idea of how much to expect to pay? Thanks

Hi Zerochlor, thanks for that tip, I was going to bring the old Porsche cos is worth bugger all but in good condition but maybe I'd do better leaving it in moth balls and bringing a newer model.
