What do you think ? Would a German Specialities Restaurant and Bar have a chance in TRNC ? Oferring simple cuisine like grilled sausage (Bratwurst) and grilled ribs ( Rippchen ) and serving draft efes in big glasses with German beer brandings on them ? What should such a restaurant offer to make you go there ? Any ideas welcome, thanks, Rene

Hi Tommy, I'm a kraut myself and I know many of the Germans living in NC. My idea is do the job not only for them (there are not enough of them in NC to bring good capacity to such aproject). I'm interrested in the opinion and the ideas of you all ! many thanks, Rene

We cycled through Germany on the way here and I tried to eat Germany out of shnitzels and spargle (asparagus) a valient effort but doomed to failure - must try harder one day. I would frequent such a place for sure but what about the pork products and the Muslem culture - you may find it hard to fill the gap between the tourist season and normal life! I would think that a German style buffet bar as you can find in most big German stores would go down well along with the help yourself breakfasts and lunches that are so popular there. Again there is the pork issue but Ezic seem to get away with it on an almost solely chicken standard! May well be worth a try as I have not seen any German eating houses her at all. Would think that West of Girne is a bigger catchment area as well - should not have said that as I live on the east side! Good luck if you go for it.

I think it's a good idea, anything to give us a bit more variety! There are plenty of T.C.'s here with german links, and plenty of ex-forces that would have been posted to germany, plus, it's different, so as long as it's good fare, it could be a winner.

Thank you all for your feedback, the idea is only a few hours old now. I think without porc it will not work, you can't replace everything by chicken. Surely it is possible to buy porc in the south, but I'm not a friend of buying there and such a kind of business relationship could each day be cancelled by political affairs. On the other hand there are lots of empty lorries going from Germany to Turkey every day, perhaps this would be a chance for reliable delivery of porc products, although in this case they surely need some conservation treatment. Doyen - I swear I'll never take the towel from your sunbed. Thanks and hope some more ideas will come up. Rene

Hi Rene, plenty of pork where I live in Germany, but also lots of Turks!.They are not very happy with the market stalls selling ribs and haxn, but that is their problem. My favourite here is 'schnitzel wiener art', but I also love zwiebelrostbraten, also Rosti and Bratkartoffeln. We found some lamb chops recently, so they are sitting in the freezer waiting for lunch one day.

There is/was a German restaurant in Alanya called the Green Frog? Superb ordinary German food snitzel, pork steaks etc with wonderful sauces , potato dishes like rosti and it was packed out every night. If you did something like that here you would get my custom. I'm dribbling at the thought of it all, or is it my age! Codger

Hi Kaiser, sounds like you're in the southern part of Germany, we're in the north. In a few days we'll take off to NC, we've been there many times up from 1999. Wiener Schnitzel, Haxn and Rostbraten you can cook of calf meat instead of porc, Thank you. Rene

hi rene its a lovely idea. We do have some german customers for sourkraut and bratwurst etc from our deli. However I have to say its very difficult to get all the german products that we get requested. I know if they could be got then its certainly a winner. I wish you well. xxxxxx

Mates, you're giving me courage ! I'm just back out of my kitchen, made some handgrated roesties served with smoked salmon and peppered cream quark, easy to do und very delicious, perhaps even healthy. Jaegerschnitzel - no problem. Stampfkartoffel- no problem. We got many things in NC - potatoes not only for making chips. As been said - where to get the porc meat ? Another aspect - what do you think the place should look like ? I think of heavy wood made furniture, comfortable seats, not a lot of this and that. Tables could be pure wood surface, often cleaned, no

Dimka, thanx, beer specialities should be there, too. But I'm thinking about the basics at the moment, goods needed to be imported will be on top. They make the whole thing expensive, but perhaps you're right - efes for reasonable price and specialities for the price of lovers. Regards, Rene

Lilli, what are the 3 products mostly wanted and not possible to get ? You know - Sauerkraut - sourkrout- chukrut -sukru - you can produce on your own. But it takes a few month and you need a dark (ok) and cold (!) place for it. We'll be in NC in a few days and althouh its a long way from east catalkoy perhaps we can meet and talk about a sukru joint venture. Our turkish mobile is 0533 848 3896. Regards, Rene

Hi kaiserphil, A year in TRNC is a long time. The only place I know you can get a regular supply of pork is The Pork Shop in Alsancak. He sells the biggest, fattiest chops I've ever seen. Free range, swill-fed by the taste of them. Yum!

Oh what an idiot! (me, that is) I meant the WEST side of course!! There's a nice empty ex-restaurant unit - that used to be Cousins - on the main Alsancak road opp. Starlings, good position for you, set up for indoor and outdoor eating, right on the main road near the shops and Deniz Kizi hotel, Kings Court and Villa Club. Or there's what used to be Mediterranean Breeze Restaurant, (then Aquarium) opp. Kervansary Beach, on the road that leads up to the Mercure Hotel, nice little catchment area there aswell. It's up for rent I think. Quite big, room for an Oompah Band and a good floor for dancing!

jacktheladett - you're right - the old Cousins place is an ideal spot and set up nicely for indoor and outdoor eating. Just a word of caution here though. The owner told us that they were forced to move because the greedy Landlord put up the rent so much that they couldn't afford to stay there. In typical TRNC fashion, the place has remained empty since they moved. You'd think that some rent was better than none, but that's the mentality, as I'm sure you know. renelapin - good luck with your venture, if you decide to take the plunge. You have certainly had a lot of positive feedback J

| beno, you're in Salzgitter at the moment ? I'm not far away - Hannover area. We'll be back from NC on June 9th, perhaps we can meet for a lecker erbsensoup here. The german Stammtisch at moon over water is a new one for those who live round Gazimagusa. The old one for the north shore Germans ( and German Speakers) is on the first tuesday a month at Courtyard Inn, Karakum. The-wicks, yes I'm happy with this lot of fine feedback. But the idea is still in its babyboots. Next week in NC I'll start some more investigations. Jacktheladd, the information about the farmer could be very usefull. Can you please tell me where exactly I can find him ? To you all: If this idea will come true, I'll invide you all feedback-givers for free bratwurst with loewensenf (lions mustard) and an efes (don't believe in being able to offer German beer except efes will be in the boat to fake some). | 'Lapin'? Cool it man, still learning Deutsch, aber langsam. One problem is I have an American girl who has lived here for a long time, and speaks the language fluently. Before I met her I had to speak for myself, like sorting out things like the Finanzamt, AOK etc. Now I am a little lazy, but I do my best. Soon learnt how to read a menu! She teaches English, so I help her out, after all she only speaks American. Cue for TurboTurk! |

Positive Reiner, we are off to Pittsburgh in a few days! I speak French, far better than I speak Deutsch - but watch this space! By 'problem' I meant that her speaking Deutsch fluently means that I am not forced to speak for myself so much. But I am able to order a well-done rump steak!

It is true that service plays a very important role in the running of a restaurant. Personnally, i really agree that restaurant should try it's best to offer customer prompt and convinient service. Customer usually become impatient when they can't get timely service, and they have to cry out loudly or keep waving hands, restaurant calling system can help to solve this problem, it includs buttons that placed on tables, and display sreen carried by waiters, when customers need service he just need to press buttons and then waiters will receive it. You can find the similar products on website such as http://www.finyelectronics.com

My Austrian sister-in-law is a wonderful, (professional) cook and have enjoyed lots of good food at their home in Germany. Learnt some recipes too. |

phyl we also have family in germany and my favourite thing my german sister in law taught me was to make rumtopf. not sure if the spelling is correct. have made a similar thing here with vodka and strawberries, our cypriot friends love it. my favorite one is with vodka and lemons great on a hot summer day with lots of ice. apart from that we spent 4 days in germany with the family, the only time we ate out we went to a turkish restaurant. turkish food takes some beating!

In my experience German food is amongst the worst in Europe, I was going out with a German girl for 2 years, and even she couldn't wait to get to the UK for the food, she was told by all her friends that the food in the UK would be very bad, but after her first visit to a few restaurants here and some trips around supermarkets she was gobsmacked, and spent a bit of time telling her friends about it.

Hi firestarter Recipe sounds good. I will ask about it. Sister-in-law did make a lovely Rode Grode (can't spell it) natural fruits of the forest, for sweet at her son's wedding. She also made Indian food as they like it very much and husband is Indian. Now we are like a U.N family and we like all good food. When they came here they liked our fish and chicken but bought their own port with them!

Typo error! Last but three word should read "pork!" (Freudian slip, I think!)

Everytime we come we bring about 4 Kg of Bratwurst with us they don't last a day. Don't know any germans there yet. But the Brits have a taste for them as well.
