Has anyone heard that the law has changed here, if caught with any alcohol in your blood your insurance becomes nul and void. Don't know what the police do.

Surely there must be a stated limit otherwise if I eat one orange there will be some alcohol in my blood.

The general rule about the insurance is that they have to pay the victim but they can ask you to reimburse them if you had alcohol over the limit in your blood.

Hi Carbo i guess its a large fine and licence taken away. it will stop a lot of people going out for a drink now. However I do find that most people are very responsible towards drink driving now.

All very well, but if true the result will still depend upon who's son/daughter/cousin/nephew etc you are.

Must say I have in the past seen quite a few Brits down several beers and still drive home. Quite frightening.

The info came from a very reliable source, but hey, the more they catch the safer we will be on the roads. hears to hefty fines and bans.

I have a Greek Cypriot friend who normally lives in Norway but he spends a great time in Cyprus and he has a funny sense of humour. He was stopped once returning from Girne and when the police asked him if he had any drinks he simply said "yes". He was asked to blow into the bag and it showed no alcohol. When asked when and how much he had a drink he said, "Well, a glass of wine last Friday evening". It was a Thursday.

all the insurance policies i have seen have an "intoxication clause" - which was copied from the UK policies in the 1960's (the pc brigade stopped it in the uk) - basically if you ar done for Drink / driving following an accident, the insurance is void...

The rule as far as I know it is this.

Limit 50 milligrammes per what ever it is.

Yes it is true that your insurance will be null and void if over the limit and you lose your license for 3 months plus a fine.

Best answer to this one is don't drink and drive!!!

I agree 100% with zero tolerance drinking and driving.. But drive from Karsiya to Girne any day of the week and almost every pub on the way there is full of ex-pats WITH their cars drinking and driving.

Lets not kid ourselves here the Police ain't daft they know it goes on and turn a blind eye most of the time.

Lest anyone should think that my message 4 above is a cynics eye view of TRNC, here is a quote from another thread:

"So, a year and a half ago i get hit by a drunk driver with no drivers license and no insurance...a few days later he was back in Turkey, without so much as a slap on the wrist!!"

Leaving the lady concerned in hospital!

I don't understand how someone can drink and drive.

I tried it once but everytime I went around a corner it slopped all out of my glass!

One also mustn't swerve to avoid these dogs that jump onto the road!
