I appreciate that Turkey subsidises the TRNC. But, how much do they make from our embargoes? How much do they receive from all the flights landing in Turkey before the TRNC? How much do they make from all the goods that are imported to Turkey before being shipped to the TRNC? How much do they make from all the income that is derived from here, that finds its way back to Turkey? If you take away what Turkey subsidises the TRNC, from what they earn from us being emabargoed, you may discover that they earn more than they give.

turkey pays for our bloated civil service and pays the pensions for those who should be out there working. Anavatan pays big, too big.

Previously when North/South crossings were not permitted, then I expect the majority of money given to North Cyprus went back to Turkey to buy goods & services, the majority of which is manufactured in Turkey. Now with the crossings open, some of the money is leaking out of the system to the South. However you could argue that this is compensated for by the expats/tourists in the North pumping money in to the Turkish system.

Turkish Cypriots working in the south have been contributing millions to the RoC economy for the past six years. Just think how much TR wishes it could get that cash!

Good point. Turkish Cypriots working in the South probably spend the majority of the earnings in the North on Turkish goods.. In addition, I've heard that there are many gambling GCs that use the Casinos in the North. All in, although Turkey spend a lot of money on TRNC a lot of it is returned and goes back in to there own ecomony supporting their own manufacturers, exporters, workers, etc. Controlling the Eastern Mediterranean and securing the Turkish southern coastline is priceless!

There's no way Turkey makes a profit - the subsidies paid to keep the civil service going (& pensions) and the cost of maintaining their soldiers here would be prohibitive. The Turkish government would very much like to see the TRNC stand on its own two feet economically at least. Obviously it will take some doing before the GC's allow us to stand on our own two feet politically and militarily. The GC's are doing everything in their power to prevent the TRNC from being economically independent of Turkey - trying to snuff out property construction & real estate markets (Orams), attacking the tourism sector with their ban on direct flights, and even having TfL ban TRNC tourism related advertising on buses and on billboards in London! The GCs will also do their best to make sure that the TRNC sees nothing from the oil & natural gas deposits found off the coast of the south - they will do this by inviting foreign firms to extract the minerals in the hope that Turkey won't dare intervene.

And yes, from a security point of view, securing their southern flank is worth the price Turkey pays to support the TRNC economically. The BIG problem is that if upheld by governments across Europe, the Orams ruling will make this support considerably more expensive. A Turkish government department estimated that absent a political settlement, the cost of legal settlement for the government of Turkey alone would be in the order of euro40 billion - a monumentous amount that would either (1) have to be paid by Turkey, (2) force Turkey to massively disengage from the EU, (3) force Turkey and the TRNC into a political settlement on the terms of the GCs, or (4) lead to a major military confrontation between Turkey, greece, and the gcs which although Turkey would surely win (or at least not lose) would be massively expensive and with very uncertain outcomes.
