Evening, have seen all the posts for repellents, Avon Skin so Soft, garlic, citronella, plug-ins etc but having suffered the other week when I was over (mainly with sandflies) my question is:- Does anyone use a permanent suspended mossie net for their bed and if so are they uncomfortably hot to be inside in the summer? Also if you're half asleep in the middle of the night and need to get in and out are they easy enough to get out of and tuck back in, given that most makes (quite rightly) have no side entrances/zips. I really don't want door and window flyscreens as I think they will cut down on the great views we have. Cheers, David.

I spray all rooms in the evening and close the doors, then when we go to bed I plug in the tablet thingy ! we havn't been got yet !!!! just spotted a dead mozzie near computer as I type this, so spray must be working !!!! still don't agree with sprays but what can you do !!!!!! |

Thanks Ismet, I was thinking both. Even with all doors and windows shut and room cleared at night inevitably some biting insects seem to get in and I had jungle repellent on all but my head. Got bitten on the scalp! Mossie net plus aircon then? If you used for years, worth a try then? A night with a bit of breeze might even be able to leave the aircon off and doors open if inside a net? David.

Mozzie nets are not fine enough to keep the sandflies out which are a real pain when they start biting you whilst your trying to doze off. I have given up on mine & just spray before bedtime.

The nets I use are just the cheap ones with the ring at the top that you can buy at Onder for 20tl, they keep everything out, I do spray the room before bed though. They are easy to get in and out of, even my kids can manage, as they have an open side where the two ends cross over, if that makes sence, like a wrap-around skirt. I don't feel stuffy and wouldn't sleep without mine. Worth the buy and a lot cheaper then having the air con on all night, especially when I have three room to cool, I usually manage with just the stand up fan and the windows open.Angela

As a pest controller I have a special machine that I spray the whole house with from time to time. Just sprayed it once this year in the bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms and havent had a problem yet. Usually you see them on the walls and ceilings at night but everything is clear as a bell. We purchased the nets but in all honesty I couldnt be bothered with installing them and I get the feeling they are not comfortable to sleep with.

Vitamin B Complex from Holland & Barret or such like start taking them a month before you come out and continue while you are here. Might still get little bites but they won't be those big itchy sores! Chris

Have also used nets for years but just managed to save up and buy some fly screens - they seem to work just as well by the way. The nets we used are big square jobs that hang from the ceiling or when we sleep outside in the real hot weather we hang them up on a frame. Always spray inside about an hour before going to bed and have never been bitten inside one at all. They can stop a lot of breeze getting through and the wife did take some time getting used to sleeping inside a set of curtains but fine with it now.

David re your message 1. Just wanted to let you know that we have the cassette style fly screens on our windows which are like a roller blind inside a frame so there is nothing obscuring the actual window. They really do not detract from the view outside as you can barely see them and they are very easy to maintain and clean and can just be left up in the winter. We also have them on our doors apart from the patio doors although that was just a personal choice.

I had a big mossie net the first year here, but it has to be attached to the ceiling, which is a hassle and if one does get in you've had it. My cats also found it a problem trying to get up on the bed at night !! ....and then of course trying to get off the bed through the curtains!! So of course then I had to tie a bit back so they could come in and out which rather defeated the purpose, but it did look pretty as was like a 4 poster with a fancy top and bits hanging from it. Don't bother now, just use the plug in things and keep the windows shut at night.

UV bulbs, bug zappers, insect killers or whatever their names are, why don't you give 'em a try? http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Domestic_Index/Insect_Killers/ http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/electric+uv+mosquito+fly+insect+killer/pid/5233238 Its works based on attracting mosquitoes into the cage area, then a vacuum sucks them down to the electrified grid where they then fall out of the bottom of the unit. I found it quite efficient and easy to use especially in the bedroom. You should buy one with powerful light 'cos that will determine from how far away insects will be attracted. And it should be set up a bit away from your seating/sleeping area. Never tried outdoors, I am afraid the grid will get clogged quickly. All in all I like it.

Nurseawful I can do your whole house including exterior walls where you have lights fitted as this attracts them at night for £50. You have to be out of the house whilst its being done and cant come back in for about four hours. Usually I spray a house in the morning so you can go out in the morning and come back in the afternoon. You will need to put away any food and anything you eat from away. If you have any questions let me know tony@thepiedpiper.uk.com. For your info you can log onto our website as my company in the UK is still trading. http://www.pest3.com

Thanks all for your replies, very helpful. Hey a thread that wasn't hijacked... I do have an Insectocutor I brought out but only used it in the kitchen and hadn't considered any other form of fly screen either so will investigate some more combinations and see how I fare when next out. No I won't be *wearing* combinations! Cheers, David.
